Corp000085 Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 7:30pm Should be a good one tonight. Hopefully the Sabres can keep on rolling and plan on through the teppo injury. Sucks for Numminen, great for Paetsch and Butler. These guys will be playing for that 6 spot when Numminen gets healthy. Paetsch has been in the doghouse, and rightfully so, but if this doesn't foster some competition, he's a throw away at the trade deadline... Go sabres!
carpandean Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 We managed a little separation from Carolina with the win Saturday. However, we have Florida right behind us (and they have a game-in-hand) and Pittsburgh hasn't gone away. This is another four-point game that we have to win. Florida has been winning a lot lately, but not against quality teams. Hopefully, they will be overconfident going into tonight. They are starting to believe that they can make the playoffs and we need to stomp out those dreams.
billsrcursed Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 This is one of those teams that always seems to "step up their game" against us, especially in their house. Should be entertaining. I expect some stout goaltending in this one. They have some pretty good talent, and match up against us nicely. I sure hope Nate steps up to the challenge, although as posted elsewhere by Deluca, his ice time won't mirror Teppo's. Butler should get the real chance here, and I for one would love to see him included on our power play. His slapper HAS to be better than Teppo's, right?? 3-2 Sabres

I agree he could be utilized in place of Teppo, he moves the puck well and makes great decisions. Miller has been looking really solid lately and I don't expect tonight to be any different. 4-1 Sabres rout. GO SABRES!!
R_Dudley Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Well here it is just a little past mid January and here we are in the beginning stretch of what promises to be a dogfight for the playoffs for us right on through April. Bruins, Caps, Rags, Canadians in the top 4 and NJD and Cryers tied in games/points 6 ahead of us for 5th and 6th seeds. Sabres comfortably in 7th( ) by 1 pt over the Penguins in 8th with 2 games in hand but Florida 2 pts behind us with a game in hand on us 3 on pens. Hurricanes 4pts back but played 1 more games than us, 2 more than Florida.... So the game with Florida is huge in it's a 4 pointer in the ECF and it's also about proving we belong in the playoff's. The top teams in the ECF (IMO Boston, Washington, Montreal) do not appear to be fading. The NYR have been stumbling of late and are only 1 point ahead of the competion(NJD, Cryers) having played 2 more games. It's been said here by others in other posts and I agree the Sabres could finish no higher than 5th but also as bad as 10th with a little losing streak. I am expecting a very tight, hard fought game from Florida. No blowout predcited here and I would be happy with 2-1 road win. Miller IMHO will need to continue his strong play since this team still shows lapses for periods at a time and Florida is capable of playing strong and seem to bring their A game against us(something to do with shared affiliation and some of the players knowing each other is my guess). Go Sabres

Who was filling that spot (and also Sekera's spot on the point)? If I had to guess it would be one of the forwards, Connolly maybe.

If I had to guess it would be one of the forwards, Connolly maybe. The two PP units were: Lydman, Connolly, Roy, Pominville and Vanek Rivet, Kotalik, Hecht, Stafford and Gaustad If I remember correctly, the points were Lydman/Connolly and Rivet/Kotalik.

... Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 I remember Butler being in on the PP recently, can't remember if it was this last game or the game he played before that.
carpandean Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 So Lydman is one guy getting bumped up. If I remember correctly, Lindy used Toni on the PP in Dallas and said in his post-game that he was happy with the way he played there. I remember Butler being in on the PP recently, can't remember if it was this last game or the game he played before that. I believe that Lindy threw him out near the end of the disastrous 6-minute PP in Chicago, probably to see if it sparked anything, but nothing was working that night. I'm sure he'll get another shot now. Edit: just checked and Sekera was out there near the end, not Butler. He wasn't even in the game.
... Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 I remember Butler being in on the PP recently, can't remember if it was this last game or the game he played before that. Quoting myself - I can't find proof of this. Perhaps I was on crack at the time.
carpandean Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Quoting myself - I can't find proof of this. Perhaps I was on crack at the time. He had 0:07 of PPTOI against Ottawa and has just 0:09 of PPTOI total this season. So, I'd say that he hasn't really had a shot yet.

Well, at least I wasn't on crack then - I agree he hasn't had a real shot, but he WAS on the ice for a PP or two.
shrader Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 If I remember correctly, Lindy used Toni on the PP in Dallas and said in his post-game that he was happy with the way he played there. He has always seemed to be 5th or 6th on the powerplay pointman depth chart. I should have though of him right away.
jwcolour Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 I don't care who is on the point as long as they can hit the net with their shots instead of blasting it right into the PK'ers legs or completely missing the net. It doesn't need to be a blistering slapshot, hell Jason Woolley was extremely effective (offensively) by simply wristing it through the traffic in front.
Foligno's Nose Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Well, at least I wasn't on crack then - I agree he hasn't had a real shot, but he WAS on the ice for a PP or two. Just say no. or... find a reasonable substitute/ replacement. Might I suggest the recommendations on the 'Chicken Wing' thread. The major complications are better: drink more beer, a desire for carrots/ celery in bleu cheese and messy fingers.

Foligno's Nose Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Paetsch and Butler. These guys will be playing for that 6 spot when Numminen gets healthy. As previously stated in other posts, I strongly feel Chris Butler has earned his keep in this lineup. He does not hurt them. At the worst, he could be rotated with the other six (5,6,10,27,44 & 52). By that I mean he would supplant the current dog as determined by Lindy (usually #10). I don't see 5, 6, 44, or 52 coming out of the lineup. 27 & 52 may need to be rested for old age and nagging injuries respectively. Next season looks interesting with Butler & Weber in the top six mix. Who will be gone? Tallinder?, Numminen?, Spacho???
Foligno's Nose Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Can't forget about the unforeseeable eruption of natural gas pockets. How did I forget that??? There also is the interesting, possibly stinging BM's 8-10 hours later.
wjag Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Finally get to watch one from the comforts of my home.. Defensive carousel continues... This has the feeling of a very low scoring affair...

wjag Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Florida has a definite jump in their skates tonight... So far, they have had the better of the play and chances...
SwampD Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 I have Center Ice, and watch WAY too much hockey, and I can honestly say that there is not another team in the league that hits as many skates on shots as the Sabres.
