'The chatter is the Atlanta Thrashers are going to send veteran Mathieu Schneider to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for winger Maxim Afinogenov. Buffalo wants a blue-liner and hasn't been able to give away Afinogenov because no other team wants to pick up his $3.5-million salary.'

'The word is Flyers GM Paul Holmgren is shopping Daniel Briere and his huge contract. While Briere has extended his rehab assignment from a groin injury with AHL's Phantoms through tonight, Holmgren has been trying to find room for his $6.5-million US cap hit. Since finding somebody to take Briere, who has missed 29 of the club's past 30 games, is going to be nearly impossible because he has five years left on his deal, the club likely will have to move defenceman Randy Jones and winger Joffrey Lupul to make room for Briere. At first glance, the idea seemed plausible but upon further review, it doesn't make a lot of sense. He's making $5.75 million, with 10 points in 33 games and he is a minus 13. Ouch!

Sekera: 22:11 per game, 0.30 PPG, -11

Schneider: 21:11 per game, 0.30 PPG, -13

Schneider obviously has a worse +/- per game (has played 33 games vs. Sekera's 43), but also plays on a worse team. Other than that, they are comparable offensive defensemen. Schneider also has a proven track record of producing points and high (positive) +/- prior to this season, so he may do better on a better team.

As for the financials, given their contracts and the remaining length of the season, it would cost the Sabres approximately $1 million to trade a press box forward into a top-four offensive defenseman. After Sekera and Teppo return, it would also make it easier to trade Tallinder, making up the rest of the difference. Doesn't seem like a terrible decision to me. Not that I put much faith into these sort of things.

I would make the deal in a heartbeat but deal doesn't make much sense for Atlanta unless a prospect is involved or Max and Kovalchuk are buddies and want to play together.

I think his numbers are a bit off because he plays in Atlanta. I would love to add him to this roster. I don't think we will be making many moves at all and honestly his $5.75 million deal doesn't scary me one bit because we get ride of $3.5 for Max. It's really becoming unlikely for anybody to take on Max. Sabres need to fix up this defense and gotta do it quick. Schneider is a +34 in the last 2 seasons combined. He can hit. He doesn't have the greatest shot in the world but his shot is very accurate. If we end up making one and only one move this season, i wouldn't mind if it was this.

At first i opened the link to read about the Sabres deal to see if there was more content, and after my post, i went back to see the rest and noticed Bruce Garrioch wrote it. So, it's basically a Eklund who has a real journalist job. Same guy who said Malkin would be a LA King within days and reporter numerous other crazy stuff. Oh well, i really did like this deal for Sabres sake.

Thank you for pointing that out. That was the main reason why I give zero credence to this rumor. Garrioch is supposedly a hockey columnist, but he's nothing more than a legitimized Eklund because he's paid by the Ottawa Sun. Garrioch is a hack who makes up more ridiculous rumors than Eklund. Eklund has his own website while Garrioch gets wider distribution through a newspaper, but essentially they are the same guy as they dream up rumors on their own. If I see this coming from Bob MacKenzie or Darren Dreger, I'll think there would be a lot more to it, but not from Garrioch.
