Eleven Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Let's have some fun. Every year, we see posts from April through the postseason about when someone "knew" the Sabres would or wouldn't make the playoffs, like "I knew the Sabres were going to make it when they beat the Senators in January" or "when the Sabres lost to the Caps, I knew this wasn't a playoff team." So here's the chance for everyone to show their smarts--in advance. When you "know" whether the Sabres will or won't make the playoffs, post your prediction in this thread. But no revisions. One person, one prediction. If you think last night's loss to Detroit was the bellwether game, go ahead and make the prediction now. If a win over Dallas next week convinces you that the Sabres are going to make it, make your prediction then. Simple enough. The poster with the earliest correct prediction gets bragging rights for 2009-2010.
carpandean Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 I know after last night that we will not keep the Detroit Red Wings from defending their cup this year. Now, if somebody else knocks them off in an earlier round, all bets are off. But if we face them in the finals, they will repeat. If any Sabre is reading this, then please feel free to prove me wrong.

The way Miller and Roy have led this latest streak, 10-5-2 has me convonced that they will make the playoffs but unless Hecht and Kotalik either join the party or DR gets someone who will, the playoff run will be short lived. To answer your specific question, these last two games by Miller has me convinced.
JujuFish Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 The Sabres will make the playoffs in the 6-8 seed. If they get matched up with the Bruins in the first round, they may very well pull off an upset.
nobody Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 The Mayan calander has indicated for over 5000 years that 12.19.16.4.7 3 Manik 5 Pohp G6 will be a good period for the Sabres. So of course it's a given that they make the playoffs. The Sabres and Bills were both going to win their titles in 2013 but the world ends December 21, 2012 so Buffalo fans gets screwed again.
deluca67 Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 I really feel if the Sabres can get into the playoffs they will do some damage. They do have a lot players who went to the ECF back to back. That said, I don't see the Sabres making it as is. There has to be a significant deal which I don't see happening. They need a top six forward with size. I can't imagine their being many available to the Sabres this deadline.

Is that an official prediction or a statement that you're waiting to see if there's a trade first?
deluca67 Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 Is that an official prediction or a statement that you're waiting to see if there's a trade first? If they don't add size and quality upfront they won't make the playoffs. If there is a significant trade I reserve the right to alter my prediction.
Two or less Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 If they don't add size and quality upfront they won't make the playoffs. If there is a significant trade I reserve the right to alter my prediction. I'm with you. This is a nice run that we're on, but if we don't add a little size and a quality forward, we won't make the playoffs. We'll go through stretches that are good and some bad. Adding Doan would be huge for this team i think. He'd be another scorer and could add a bit of grit and some leadership. That being said though, if they do add a little bit to this team (and i'm not even talking about a Doan), and remain healthy, i do think they can go on a bit of a run and move up to 5th or 6th.
Eleven Posted January 13, 2009 Author Report Posted January 13, 2009 Ok. So we've got Juju on record with his prediction that the Sabres will make it, and no firm prediction to date that the Sabres won't. We're an optimistic bunch. Good.
carpandean Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 I'm with you. This is a nice run that we're on, but if we don't add a little size and a quality forward, we won't make the playoffs. I wouldn't say "won't", but it would be maybe 50/50 that we sneak in. However, if we were to make it, we wouldn't go far (be lucky to squeeze out one round.) If we do add the desired players, that probability of making it goes up, but so does the chance of going further in the post-season. Right now, as constructed, we're mediocre and inconsistent. We can win against most of the best teams (I don't know about Detroit), but can also lose to the worst teams.
Guest Sloth Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 I hope the Sabres will make the playoffs, but they've been far too inconsistent the entire season. They go on stretches where their fired up and willing to do what ever it takes to win a game, but they also go on stretches where they play "flat footed" and let the opposing team control the game. Due to inconsistency and the lack of any attempt to bring in a strong forward, I think they'll make the playoffs and get outsted in the first round...unless they play Boston. After beating Boston 4-2, Philly will knock them out in the second round.
Taro T Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 The way Miller and Roy have led this latest streak, 10-5-2 has me convonced that they will make the playoffs but unless Hecht and Kotalik either join the party or DR gets someone who will, the playoff run will be short lived. To answer your specific question, these last two games by Miller has me convinced. Even after the last 3 games, I expect the team to make the playoffs; due in great part to the play of Miller. It's kind of ironic that a 2 game stretch w/ Boston as the 2nd game appeared to knock Ryan off his game and another 2 game stretch w/ Boston as the 2nd game got him back on it. Playoff run will be short w/out another "leadership" veteran, preferrably a #2 center.
JohnRobertEichel Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 I am officially going on record as saying the Sabres will NOT make the playoffs and will finish 10th overall in the Eastern Conference, with this prediction directly following the Jan. 14 Blackhawks game. I am making this prediction regardless of what Regier does before the trade deadline (which will be nothing of significance).
SwampD Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 If we lose to Dallas, we're out. If we win, we're in.
stenbaro Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 I will stick with my prediction before the season..No playoffs..
Eleven Posted February 20, 2009 Author Report Posted February 20, 2009 I'm bumping this in case anyone wants to add anything after last night.

My prediction (post #15) may have been later than DeLuca's (posts #7 and #9), but DeLuca also wasn't very definitive in his.
