Syndrummer Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 What are the moves, if any, that the Sabres will make by the Trade Deadline???
Two or less Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 You gotta think they will try to add some grit and a scorer. Hopefully that can be in one package.... i love MacArthur but he's inconsistent, and Kotalik and Hecht provide nothing for the offense. They need another guy who can put the puck in the net.
nucci Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Can we please stop with the "grit". Most here thought we had too much finesse and not enough grit. Now we have zero finesse and no offense unless Roy or Vanek score. We need a goal scorer!!

Last night against the Wings, it was just rush after rush, an onslaught by Detroit, meanwhile we were in and out of there Zone. Was that our lack of size coming to play, or did we just play small, and respect Detroit a little too much? After that first goal it just seemed like we played on our heals the rest of the night, who is out there for the taking that could help in that arena?
Bmwolf21 Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Can we please stop with the "grit". Most here thought we had too much finesse and not enough grit. Now we have zero finesse and no offense unless Roy or Vanek score. We need a goal scorer!! Problem is we have no scoring and no grit. We have a bunch of floaters who don't want to get dirty in the corners or in front of the net, no playmaking centers, and inconsistent scoring outside Vanek, Roy and Pominville.
SabresFan526 Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 I am quite certain that with the play of Butler, Tallinder will be getting traded. I think the Sabres may go after a second line scoring center. It would be a coup if the Sabres somehow got rid of Max for anything. I think the Sabres may go after Ville Koistinen and will try to acquire a second line centerman like Comrie, Reinprecht, or Andy McDonald, at least I hope. While I'm liking the way Stafford is playing, he and Paille are not untouchable and if they can get great value in return, I'm not opposed to trading them. I think the biggest problem with the Sabres is consistency. It's not as though they don't have the talent or the grit, they just don't play with consistency and that seems to be a problem of leadership even with Rivet. We have a bunch of floaters and when they are interested in playing, they play well, but usually they're not too interested in playing and that's the problem. I don't know how you get multi-millionaires motivated to play on a consistent basis.

Pomminstein is on pace for 62 points this year. His numbers haved dropped big time. I'd shorten the consistent players list to Roy and Vanek. Roy started out slow, but he's been on fire as of late.
cilevel Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 What are the moves, if any, that the Sabres will make by the Trade Deadline??? Darcy is way too unpredictable but my vote would go for getting a forechecking center. Andy McDonald or Doug Weight would be great. ON the younger front Nathan Horton. From Atlanta White or Little might be a good addition. Someone more shifty - maybe Reinprecht from Phoenix.

I don't know how you get multi-millionaires motivated to play on a consistent basis. I like your choices with the exception of Comrie, which is really just a personal thing for me. He probably could help the team, I just don't like him. And I agree, Tallinder is most likely gone.
SabresFan526 Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Will they make the moves however?? I think this year they will. Butler's play and Connolly's wildcard status has forced Darcy's hand. I think Darcy will definitely trade Tallinder. Tallinder still has a year left on his contract and still has enough trade value to where the Sabres can actually get some good talent in return. Contrary to popular belief, he is still quite highly regarded around the NHL even if most Sabres fans consider him garbage.
cilevel Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Will they make the moves however?? I do think they will make some moves, and I think we will lose a minimum of 1 roster D and 1 forward (probably 2). What I mean by that is that it will take two roster players to get one of the players we need. I really hope we make two separate moves to adequately change the mix of players on the team. Our greatest need is a forechecking center so I hope that we get that at a minimum. We could also use a big winger and a (very) physical defensemen.

He probably could help the team, I just don't like him. And I agree, Tallinder is most likely gone. Yeah, I don't particularly like Comrie personally, either. I think he's a total jerk. But he's feisty, will drop the gloves, and still is very talented. It's nice to have players who can play with grit and can score goals.

Contrary to popular belief, he is still quite highly regarded around the NHL even if most Sabres fans consider him garbage. Agree, he has struggled here but has proven (in the past) the level he can play. I think he has value and could be a good addition to a team that already has good physical presence on their backend. Add one of our 3rd line forwards (Mac, Paille) and a prospect or pick and we might be able to land someone like McDonald or Horton. I think Mac has enough upside and is young enough that he could be valuable. Paille not so sure. We have a number of good prospects to add value and get a top 6 forward down the stretch.

I'd shorten the consistent players list to Roy and Vanek. Roy started out slow, but he's been on fire as of late. True, and I think Pominville's play really underscores the need for another playmaking center. Stafford is also on the decent but inconsistent list. Those are the top four forwards in terms of points (Vanek, Roy, Pominville and Stafford) followed by a defenseman (Spacho) and then a couple big dropoffs to Kotalik/MacArthur and then to Hecht (13 points in 32 games? Really?)

Yes , us and most other Playoff worthy teams... Yeah, I don't particularly like Comrie personally, either. I think he's a total jerk. Sounds like perfect definition of a rental player just for the push, question is would DR do it this season knowing we get nothing or only if they think we have a legitimate chance to go deep in playoff's...

sabresnutinphoenix Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 I'd say if he move any possible free agents, they'd be first to go (i.e. Max)....
deluca67 Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 I don't expect the Sabres to do anything significant. Maybe dump max for a late round pick. Maybe a spare part forward if there are any long term injuries. I do not expect the Sabres to address any of their glaring needs. There front office has gotten so used to living in denial that will continue through the rest of the season with the players they have now.

Which, if you look at the team on nhlnumbers, makes sense to do. It may not get us a winning team this season, but the off season has plenty of potential. We have 7 players becoming UFAs and 5 RFAs. Letting 4 of those UFAs go along with maybe trading a few of the RFAs (Stafford for example) could really allow for some big changes. Would you rather make trades now in order to have immediate gratification, or wait till the end of the season and potentially get a lot more?

If you let all the UFA's and RFA's go, you still have only room for one big name signing unless you plan on spending more then $50 million next year. Most of the changes will be Portland Pirates unless they do the smart thing and trade Hecht for a true number 1 or 2 center.

Rafalski is not a very good guy but plays well along the boards. Having big players doesn't mean you win puck battles
