Guest Sloth Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Buffalo had 4 shots in the 2nd period. This is MUCH like last night. The Sabres responded w/ a 13 shot 3rd period and went on to win. If Buffalo can produce a give it all you got 3rd period, they can win. If the Sabres can't, I do not think they can get the win. As of now, they're lucky to be tied going into the third period.
SabresFan526 Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 The Sabres were thoroughly outplayed that period. Miller is the only reason the Sabres are in this game, but the goal he gave up he should have had. But, if not for him, it'd be 5-1 Detroit instead of 1-1. The Sabres need to get more pressure and more shots on goal. To beat Detroit, you have to beat them at their own game. Man, when you watch Detroit, they make it look so easy and there's not a lot of complicated strategy to what they do, they just win faceoffs, control the puck, and get shots on net. The Sabres need to do the same in the third to get at least a point out of this game.
R_Dudley Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Hard to do when we're getting beaten to every loose puck, can't clear our own zone, and can't make two passes connect in a row. Wings are good, they're doing a great job forechecking us to bits. The Sabres were thoroughly outplayed that period. They play with a urgent but relaxed style and very rarely appear out of position and just seem to anticipate and follow the play. Our guy's need to get their feet moving and start playing their game instead of watching/showing these wings too much respect and we need to stop using the boards and long passes to clear the zone all the time, everybody in NHL must have that film is on to that.... Short tic tac toe passes and need to get pucks on the net.... Lets go Buffalo :chris:
wjag Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 I made the comment last night and it holds tonight... The longer Buffalo hangs around the better our chances are. Detroit should be up by a couple. This game could be ours for the taking with some opportunistic offense and some trap D...
Crestwood Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 How does Buffalo intend to put on some offensive pressure if Paille has more playing time than Vanek, Roy and Stafford? The Sabres' chances have come one at a time, every once in a great while, while the Wings seem to get two or three every rush. Somebody (I believe wjag) said it before and I think it's an accurate description: This has been like watching varsity vs. JV. Let's go, Buffalo, cut down on the turnovers and get behind that brutal Detroit forecheck with smart passes out of your own zone. This game's far from lost, but it'd be nice for Miller to not have to steal another period for ya.
tulax Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Stafford interview: "We have a 20 minute hockey game against a pretty good hockey team." Pretty good? Detroit is the best team on the planet. They are thoroughly outplaying the Sabres because they have more desire. I wonder if Miller is thinking that this is deja' vu to last night. On Hudler's goal there was a Sabre (my guess is Kotalik the way he is playing) that was simply coasting about 10 ft behind him into the play. No hustle, no intensity, no passion except from the usual subjects: Gaustad, Ellis, and Paille. The Pominville-Hecht-MacArthur line has to be broken up. Put Pominville back with Ellis and Gaustad like in Boston. Hecht is showing that he clearly isn't out of his slump and MacArthur looks to be out of his league. Sekera, who played a great game last night, has dropped right off tonight. Kotalik? His one hit was from behind on Holmstrom. Other than that, he seems to feel the only time he needs to contribute is in the shootout. Big Props to Miller for actually showing up to play tonight, again. This is the type of team Buffalo will face in the playoffs if they make it there. Win or not, it's scary to think about the overall difference in ability between the Buffalo skaters and the Detroit skaters.
smith Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 yeah their forecheck is good, but we're making them look like gods when trying to get it out of our own zone...ridiculous

This really does feel like a jv vs. varsity game.
Buffalo Wings Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Starting to get *some* offense....
wjag Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 I didn't read what wjag wrote, but I had the exact same thought in mind. This really does feel like a jv vs. varsity game. We've got no business winning this game, but the longer it goes on, the more I like our chances... We're gonna get a fluke goal.. Conklin is asleep..
Guest Sloth Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Detroit commentator's just made the point they feel as if Buffalo is happy w/ how this game is going. How can the Sabres, if they are, be content w/ this? Buffalo should be doing everything they can to pull of the upset. This is a playoff game for Buffalo, but it's a practice for Detroit. That's what it feels like. The Sabres need to turn it up!
Crestwood Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 How do the officials expect Stafford to avoid that? There was absolutely nothing he could do with Rafalski riding his back. Unbelieveable.
Guest Sloth Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Great pk. I'm sickened by officiating in the NHL in general. Detroit held a Sabre, can't recall which one, in the 2nd and they weren't called for it. Stafford is pushed inton Conklin and they call him for the penalty. This is bs officiating and I'm not just saying this for the Sabres. The officiating for the NHL flat out sucks.
wjag Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 How do the officials expect Stafford to avoid that? There was absolutely nothing he could do with Rafalski riding his back. Unbelieveable. I see your point... Maybe if he hadn't gone through the paint, it would have been a different call.. Tough one... But what doesn't break you, emboldens you... How about a D-man from the point sneaking one in????
wjag Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 How does Pominville miss that.... :censored: :censored: :censored:

But what doesn't break you, emboldens you... How about a D-man from the point sneaking one in???? Tough to say; I'd argue he would'nt have had to skate through the blue if Rafalski hadn't been hounding him. Either way, I hope you're right about the goal! Edit: Arghhhhh, Hecht and Pom just miss giving Buffalo the lead!
wjag Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 That was Buffalo's chance. SOB! I could hear the collective groan of WNY all the way to here in Maryland with that... The game was on his stick.. Well almost on his stick..
Guest Sloth Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Buffalo's on a 4 minute "penalty kill." I can already feel it.
wjag Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Damn... Miller was down Samuelson lifts it over him Buffalo: :worthy: Detroit: :censored: :censored:
Guest Sloth Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 And Buffalo couldn't kill the "penalty." Game over.
Crestwood Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 And that's how the cookie crumbles ... :death: Damn.
