Bmwolf21 Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Did the Rags really think Drury was their shootout guy? We know better...he's a great player, but in a shootout, not so much. Probably hoping he knew something about Miller.
KD in CT Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Drew:  That was a weak shot. But the Rangers didn't look good in the shootout either. Nice for Miller; he played great and deserves the win.
wjag Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Did the Rags really think Drury was their shootout guy? We know better...he's a great player, but in a shootout, not so much. He was only used in Buffalo if the first four or five guys missed....
bob_sauve28 Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Ya!! Ryan Miller! Nice to see Ryan win one for us!
Bmwolf21 Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Anyway fantastic game by Miller - according to the MSG announcers "43 saves, that's a steal by Miller" and the team came alive after the Roy goal. Big two points.
SwampD Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Great poke check by Miller on Drury. Man, am I getting old. I think I pulled a muscle in my elbow pumping my fists.

BSABRES269 Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Miller stopping Drury for the mother f'n win!
KD in CT Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Don't get me wrong, Miller played great. But the 2nd and 3rd shooters both whiffed after their dekes. Oh yeah....that was my point about the Rangers not looking good in the shootout. None of them had a quality shot. Miller earned it during regulation.
NowDoYouBelieve Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 ...And then all of Miller's detractors finally realized how good he was and all was right in the kingdom of the Sabres. The End.
SabresFan526 Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Wow! Absolutely wow! Miller was absolutely phenomenal tonight. He's had some shutouts in his career, but seriously, I have never seen him play better in his entire career. Absolutely nothing was getting in on Miller tonight. He was absolutely fantastic, 43 saves on 44 shots was incredible. And, then, he stoned all three shooters in the shootout. Absolutely amazing. As for the rest of the team, I actually thought the Sabres played pretty well. This is a very good Rangers team and they really played strong and contained them. The Sabres played very well defensively tonight and Miller of course was their best player. I thought the Sabres played pretty well in the first, were not very good at all in the second even though they scored their goal, and really played well in the third. Again, the only goal scored was another gritty goal with Roy going to the net hard and scoring on Stafford's rebound. Pretty goals are not going to do it anymore and it's going to take hard work and effort to score and the Sabres scored again that way. Well, folks, we have a little bit of a streak with 4 straight wins. Now we go to Detroit tomorrow. We need to carry this momentum forward, with what I will presume is a game that Lalime will start in net against arguably the best team in the NHL.
NowDoYouBelieve Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Oh yeah....that was my point about the Rangers not looking good in the shootout. None of them had a quality shot. Miller earned it during regulation. And yet they're 8-2 in shootouts now, so tonight must have been an anamoly of sorts.

He's on one of his hot streaks and there's a 3 day layoff before our next game after Detroit. Now that we're on a legit winning streak, this could be a huge statement game for us and we need to put our best foot forward by starting Ryan.
Eleven Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Oh yeah....that was my point about the Rangers not looking good in the shootout. None of them had a quality shot. Miller earned it during regulation. As above, I only saw part of the 2d, but I saw the 3d and the OT, and Miller definitely earned it there. He did a nice job tonight.
bob_sauve28 Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 They just interviewed Drury on MSG's New York coverage and he said that was the best game the Rangers had played all year, but Miller just beat them. Interesting.
Stoner Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 ...And then all of Miller's detractors finally realized how good he was and all was right in the kingdom of the Sabres. The End. Yup, it was the first good game he's ever played! He was great. You can kind of tell when he's going to be on -- he almost arrogantly starts swatting pucks away from the crease. You saw it time and time again tonight. I call them "bitch please" plays. Pucks stuck to him. He wasn't nervously flailing around. Outstanding game, although the shot numbers don't tell the whole story. No doubt, Ryan's getting on a roll. He earned another start in Detroit. No brainer there.
deluca67 Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Don't get me wrong, Miller played great. But the 2nd and 3rd shooters both whiffed after their dekes. Doesn't good positioning cause otherwise quality offensive players to mess up. When it came time for the shooter to pull the trigger Miller was there and they weren't. Let's not down play what a huge effort Miller gave tonight. Miller will have more to say about this teams ability to make the playoffs than any other player on the roster.
Saudi Arabia Rob Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Nuts, my wife made me take her to a movie tonight and I missed what appeared to have been a great game. Anyway, FYI, if you've got to miss a hockey game, Valkyrie wasn't too bad to miss it for...at least it wasn't a"chick flick."

We need to carry this momentum forward, with what I will presume is a game that Lalime will start in net against arguably the best team in the NHL. Good post. If that wasn't Miller's best game of the season, it was very close. And stopping Drury at the end was perfect (and I think Miller's pad/stick knocked the puck off of Drury's stick, so it wasn't a whiff by Drury). Now, this shouldn't erase the fact that in yet another home game, the Sabres came out and were outplayed in the 1st and completely dominated in the 2nd (until they scored with about 3 minutes left). That is not playoff-team hockey, and over the long run it will keep us out because Miller won't play that well every night. Other game notes: - I wanted to see a bit more of Ellis-Mair-Paille, especially when we were comatose in the 2nd. - Lydman had over 27 minutes of ice time while Tallinder had the least among the D with 13. I noticed that Lydman (and not Tallinder) was paired with Rivet for most of the game. - that was a scary fall Rozseval took into the corner of the boards. I thought he might've broken his cheekbone or something. - I thought Hecht played a bit better tonight than he has recently. - pretty quiet return for Connolly. Of course, we had zero power plays so we didn't get to see whether he could help our lousy home PP. - I think the MSG (NYC version) guys said that Kotalik is 5 out of 6 this year in the shootout. - I'd like to see Lalime tomorrow night, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see Miller. - I love beating the Rangers. Go Sabres.
LabattBlue Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Game thoughts... - A horrendous effort for the first 36 minutes. - Miller "stole" a game! - Kotalik with a nice shot in the shootout. That's it. Good luck on the roadie! GO SABRES!

I noticed that Lydman (and not Tallinder) was paired with Rivet for most of the game. When Rivet has played, it has mostly been with Lydman and together they have been a very effective pairing. One bad giveaway by each tonight, but otherwise, a pretty good game by them. I'm glad that Roy scored, because he and Timmy sort of leaned out of the path of the first goal just late enough to screen Miller, but not get the block.
SwampD Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Just got done watching the game again on Rangers in 60. The officiating was awesome. There were plenty of penalties that could have been called on both teams but they didn't. It didn't effect the outcome of the game at all and it really kept the flow going nicely. I think Vanek's pass may have actually gone through Drury's legs. Kotalik has just an unbelievable wrist shot. In the shoot-out, Miller definitely poked the puck away from Drury with his stick.

I think Rivet has played mostly with Tallinder. I have no way of proving this, although I think there are websites out there that provide who-plays-on-each-shift info -- I just don't know where they are. But if you are enterprising enough to track it down, I will gladly concede if proven wrong (or of course gloat if proven right).

But if you are enterprising enough to track it down, I will gladly concede if proven wrong (or of course gloat if proven right). A quick scan of the Full Play-By-Play stat pages on NHL.com showed that Rivet played with the following (primarily): Rangers (tonight) - Lydman Ottawa (1/7/09) - Tallinder, but Lydman was out with the Flu Out with shoulder (missed 11 games) Tampa (12/10/08) - Spacek Penguins(12/8/08) - Spacek Tampa (12/6/08) - Lydman, but switched to with Spacek at the end of the game. Hurt shoulder (missed 2 games) Montreal (11/29/08) - Lydman Penguins (11/28/08) - Lydman Boston (11/26/08) - Lydman Islanders (11/22/08) - Lydman Flyers (11/21/08) - Lydman Boston (11/19/08) - Lydman Pittsburgh (11/15/08) - Lydman Columbus (11/14/08) - Tallinder St. Louis (11/12/08) - Tallinder Boston (11/8/08) - Tallinder Atlanta (11/7/08) - Tallinder Devils (11/3/08) - Tallinder Knee Surgery (missed 5 games) Boston (10/21/08) - Tallinder Atlanta (10/18/08) - Tallinder Vancouver (10/17/08) - Tallinder Rangers (10/15/08) - Tallinder Islanders (10/13/08) - Tallinder Montreal (10/10/08) - Tallinder So, basically, he played with Tallinder until Hank started playing badly. He, then, was switched to with Lydman until he hurt his shoulder, when he move to with Spacek for a couple of games before going out of the lineup completely. The only game that I could find with Tallinder since then was a game when Lydman was out sick. The standard pairings when all defensemen are healthy have become: Lydman-Rivet Spacek-Sekera Tallinder-Numminen (Note: in at least one of those games, Paetsch played with Numminen instead of Tallinder.) So, we were both somewhat correct. How'd I do? Edit: Finished my look back after finding that he played with Tallinder early.
