Interesting tidbit at end of Wildcat's story

My personal take is that Lindy/Darcy like what they see in Butler and Ellis. They are helping the team win. Perhaps they move a D man to make room for Butler but with the injuries that the Sabres D accumulates on a regular basis, I doubt anyone would be moved. Maybe they send Paetsch down, hoping he clears waivers, and make Teppo the 7th defenseman.

The speculation could be just about anything too. It could just be what wildcat has read here. The one thing that seems a bit more concrete is Dineen indicating that the Sabres were looking around to help out that goalie situation. That's pretty much a no-brainer since they need more than 3 active goalies on the organization's depth chart.

I said this on another board....

Is there anything there? Maybe, but still, imo, Matt Ellis won't be back in Portland or at least I find it very hard to believe that Buffalo will send him back knowing that he'd get claimed on waivers in a flash.

Also, Butler has played his way on the squad and now you have to look at the possibility of Butler being a permanent fixture on the Sabres blueline.

There has been a lot of speculation and conjecture that Buffalo may make some sort of move to open those slots up and bring in a goalie who can play in Portland, taking a few minutes away from Enroth so the kid doesn't get burned out and bringing in an experience defenseman who can help with a fairly fragile blueline in Portland.

Weber can't do it all by himself, but more so he hasn't played well and is taking too many minor penalties for a team that doesn't take a lot of penalties to begin with.

As for picking out who???? I'll leave that up to the fans.

Columbus and Vancouver probably have the most extra goaltenders if the team is looking to pick up one in a trade.

Why would the Sabres want/need a goalie?

They need someone for Portland because Dennis is done for the rest of the reg. season (hip surgery).

Ellis still has the 10 game/30 day window to deal with, but yeah, it would be very hard to send him down with the way he's playing.

Speculation is a very vague term. Is it fan speculation? Media speculation? I'm not asking you to mention sources at all, I just don't have a good feel for what exactly that means.

The big question that comes to mind to me with regards to moving someone to make room for Butler is the contract status of Paetsch. Obviously the team would like to avoid losing an NHL body for nothing in return, but unless they bring back a minor league defensemen in return, that's exactly what they'd be doing if they traded someone like Talinder. If Paetsch does have a two-way deal (I have no idea, but I'm guessing he's not), why not just place him on waivers? There can't be all that much interest in him and he definitely wouldn't land much of anything in return from a trade.

It's not fan speculation.... I will never take what a fan said and make it fact. I'm not Eklund in that regard. I'm not even saying there will be a trade for sure, but rather that Buffalo is thinking about keeping Butler and Ellis and I don't disagree with them on that front. My speculating is coming from scouts, agents and others who have been into the press box in Portland and who I have email and phone contact with on a somewhat regular basis.

It's just conjecture, but with Dino's comments today... It's does raise certain questions that will be answered over time.

As for Ellis, if my math is correct this weekend, he will have played his 10th NHL game on this recall meaning he will need waivers to be sent back to Portland.

For the AHL?

Right - for Portland. The BJ's and Canucks have used a bunch of goalies this season so they both seem like they might have some they are willing to trade away since they haven't stuck with any of their call ups.

Unlike Wildcat48 - I'm just talking fan speculation about teams.

Thanks. It does seem like it could be a strong possibility right now. Based on their past actions though, I'm not so sure it'll happen. Hopefully we find out soon.

Wow, I didn't realize he has been up so long already. Looking at his game log on TSN, he has played 9 games since the re-call, so yeah, one left.

Since Max and Kaleta are both out for a while, doesn't that mean we can keep Ellis in the Sabres' lineup indefinitely and just healthy-scratch Peters, Paille or MacArthur for the games that Connolly plays?

The Butler question is interesting though. If they keep him up, it won't be to healthy-scratch him. With Rivet and Toni both back we'd have 8 defensemen. I'm starting to think that we're not going to trade Tallinder as long as we're in the playoff mix. They still might trade Spacek, but I don't think they would do so before the deadline -- not just to make room for Butler. He's still only playing 13-14 min. per game. Finally, I don't think they'll just walk away from Paetsch -- there's a good likelihood that Spacek and Teppo are both gone after this year, and Paetsch is still pretty young (25). So, in the meantime, I think they are going to send Butler down to Portland until another defenseman gets hurt or we get closer to the deadline.
