tom webster Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Interesting to hear Ruff say Butler is in no matter who else is available.
inkman Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Interesting to hear Ruff say Butler is in no matter who else is available. Apparently, he's much farther along than Weber was last year or certainly, this year.
Hawerchuk Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Apparently, he's much farther along than Weber was last year or certainly, this year. I'm surprised at this. Has Weber fallen off? Good to see Butler sticking around though.
SabresFan526 Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 My suspicion on this is that Lydman will not play tonight and Teppo will play. According to WGR, Teppo took the morning skate and said he felt better, but Lydman is sick and did not skate this morning. Since Max and Kaleta are both out and Connolly not coming back till at the earliest Friday, my suspicion is that Lydman is scratched tonight and Teppo will dress and at least start the game with Paetsch lining up on the fourth line and being available to move back to defense if Teppo cannot handle it or is too sick to continue on. That would be my guess. However, I do feel like tonight is a better game to dress Peters to have someone who can pound Neil than Paetsch, but that's my opinion.
BuffalOhio Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 I'm surprised at this. Has Weber fallen off? Good to see Butler sticking around though. We have to realize that Weber is younger than Butler. I'm only going on the fact that Butler played what, 3 years of college? Wasn't Weber a first-year pro last year? I think Butler is ahead because he faced stiffer competition for a longer period than Weber did. I hope Weber will be fine. These two are the future of our D-Corps.

Eh, Lindy'd be giving Neil too much credit if he dressed Peters tonight, IMHO. I'd much rather see Paetsch get a chance again; he's someone who can actually make a play and eat up some ice time. I trust Gaustad, Mair or Ellis to take care of a punk like Neil if the opportunity presents itself. Neil doesn't deserve or warrant that much say in Buffalo's gameplan. That said, here's hoping Toni and Teppo get better, but I'll also be glad to see Butler still on the ice.

Wasn't Weber a first-year pro last year? I think Butler is ahead because he faced stiffer competition for a longer period than Weber did. I hope Weber will be fine. These two are the future of our D-Corps. Butler is one year older. The fact remains, however, that Butler has long been regarded as potential top pairing defensemen while Weber has been considered a 4/5 type of guy. Either way they both figure to be regulars next year and along with Sekera and some of the other defensemen in the organization should form a steady if not spectacular core. But nothing is guaranteed and it is far too early to retire their numbers just yet.
inkman Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Either way they both figure to be regulars next year and along with Sekera and some of the other defensemen in the organization should form a steady if not spectacular core. So does Weber move into Spacek's spot?
carpandean Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 I'm surprised at this. Has Weber fallen off? Good to see Butler sticking around though. Weber has had some injury issues this season and also has been taking a lot of penalties, many of which are "bad" ones. For example, he took a double-minor penalty late in the third, then came out of the box and went right after the ref to continue arguing the call; earned himself another two minutes. I'm sure that's not gaining him any points with the boys in Buffalo.
carpandean Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 So does Weber move into Spacek's spot? I expect our D next season to be: Rivet Lydman Tallinder Sekera Butler Weber Paetsch That said, I'd prefer to trade Tallinder and pick up another right-handed physical D-man. Of that list, only Rivet is a righty. Weber, Rivet and (sometimes) Lydman are all physical, but I'd like one more. I don't expect Teppo to come back for another season. He's showing his age. Maybe as a 7th defenseman. Personally, I'd rather he be hired as a defense coach.
tom webster Posted January 6, 2009 Author Report Posted January 6, 2009 So does Weber move into Spacek's spot? My predicted d-corp next year Sekera - Rivet Lydman - right handed puck moving defensemen Butler - Weber Teppo

I wish I had pointed out the potential for Butler during this past offseason. But yeah, your bolded sentence above really says it all.
TheMadCap Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Where can I find the gametime line-ups?
carpandean Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Where can I find the gametime line-ups? It scrolls along the bottom of the screen at the start of the game. :nana:
tom webster Posted January 6, 2009 Author Report Posted January 6, 2009 I wish I had pointed out the potential for Butler during this past offseason. But yeah, your bolded sentence above really says it all. I know that we both mentioned that Butler was highly regarded and I am pretty sure that I predicted that Butler would surpass Weber this year. Maybe Carp can research that the same way he researched that other thing that sent me into a self imposed exile
LabattBlue Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 My predicted d-corp next year Sekera - Rivet Lydman - right handed puck moving defensemen Butler - Weber Teppo I'm good with this except substitute another "cheap" vet for the #6/#7 role. Spacek is as good as gone being a UFA and Tallinder is not going to regain his form from 05-06. Trade him either at the deadline or in the off-season.
carpandean Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Maybe Carp can research that the same way he researched that other thing that sent me into a self imposed exile  I was glad that you came back, though. Otherwise, I wouldn't have gotten the tickets to the game!
carpandean Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 I, too, believe [Weber] has a lot potential although from what I have heard and read, Butler is probably ahead of him as far as potential I, like the rest of us who call ourselves Sabre fans, am hoping that [Weber] makes great strides and battles for a roster spot this year. However, I know that it is just as likely that he needs another year of development and that it is just as likely that Chris Butler is the first call up. I think Shrader willl confirm that it would be a shock if any of the signed prospects make the team, that Butler may the best of the lot and that the 13th pick would be a long shot to make the jump and the 26th pick would be even a longer one. The interesting thing is that they inked Butler first, and while the least heralded, he may be the best NHL prospect of the three.
shrader Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 I bet all my comments were in PMs to tom webster.
carpandean Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 I bet all my comments were in PMs to tom webster. Honestly, I didn't even search on your name. I figured it was enough to show that TW had basically cited you as a reference. On another note, I am very glad that Butler played tonight. He had a GREAT game! I don't know how, but they better find a way to get keep him in the lineup even when Lydman is back (sounds like he was just sick, so probably Friday.)

It looked like the first time that Butler really started pinching in to keep pucks in the zone. He's starting to take some more risks now than he was in his first games. I wasn't able to watch the 3rd, but every time I saw him pinch, it was effective. Its great to see a kid develop right in front of our eyes like that on the ice. Unfortunately, we won't be watching him soon, but at least it's nice knowing that the team is in able hands when the next defenseman gets hurt.
