carpandean Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 We now have 30% of Boston's losses and the head-to-head tiebreaker should we end up tied.

SDS Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 We now have 30% of Boston's losses and the head-to-head tiebreaker should we end up tied. Well, a 1-8 matchup might make them a little uncomfortable.
shrader Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 We now have 30% of Boston's losses and the head-to-head tiebreaker should we end up tied. Unless they beat us in regulation in the next meeting. ;)

SDS Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Getting out shot 11-2 in the third is not smart. If the Sabres had the puck in the Bruins end, Boston would most like have had fewer chances to score. Buffalo would have also had a few chances of their own to put the puck in the net. I'll never support the style of play Buffalo used in the third when they're only up by 2 goals. If Boston put a goal in w/ a number of minutes to play, it would have been a whole new game and people would be mad w/ what the Sabres chose to do. Who said anything about dumb/smart? All I was saying is that it may not have been much of a choice considering how hard Boston was pushing the puck up the ice. You make it sound like only one team gets to decide the tempo w/o any influence from the other side.
tulax Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 I think the play that symbolized the entire game was Derek Roy jumping on top of Zedeno Chara after Chara kept pushing Thomas Vanek's face into the ice following a play at the net. It's still real early on in this small resurgence, but hard headed plays like that are what cement locker room chemistry even further. I thought it was real fitting that the smallest Buffalo player was willing to challenge the biggest player, and going with the symbolism biggest team, in the NHL after a scrum near the net. Great win to get ready for a tough week in the schedule coming up.

SDS Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 How does Chara not get a penalty for punching Roy 4 times? That fuggin sasquatch gets away with too much on the ice! I was mumbling the same to myself. It's one thing to get a quick shot in at the whistle, but he just kept punching him. Complete BS if you ask me.
Kristian Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Well color me impressed, I definitely didn't see a win coming today, but even more so I liked the attitude they went into this game with. I was scared they'd come into this game pretty much knowing they would lose, and hence mail it in like the Caps game, but no sir. Too many turnovers for my liking, and not a very good third period but you need to make you own luck, and tonight the Sabres did. Good game, let's keep the efforts coming and add to the Sens miserable season, please!
nfreeman Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Defintely one of my Observations, Butler deserves to be here , I don't care when Rivet comes back, Butler needs to stay.Couldn't have said it better Huge road game win! Penguins lose today and we go from 9th to 7th in east seedings that quick, Canes in 8th because we played 2 less games tied in records. This east is going to be a brutal race down to the wire. That was a very good road win against one very good Bruins team. They need to use this and build some momentum and put together that little 5-6 win streak Vanek talked about in the paper this am, however not taking stupid penalties like that at the end. Come'on TV your smarter than that... Overall I liked their jam today. -Hecht was better today especially on the kills, -Ellis deserves more ice time, -Goose had a solid game and the goal should be his not Pom's, -Kotalik and stafford still coasting a little too much -Butler had a solid game, man when I look at his choir boy face I imagine the other team does not expect him to hit like he does.. -Sekera another solid game -Max hurt in the second didn't return but didn't miss him much Up next ottawa at home, now just remember how you played and hit Alfredo, spezza and heatly like you did these bruins and good things happen..... Good post. Great win. The grit guys and Miller won this one.
wjag Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Now comes another 'real test'. Can we finally beat Heatley, Spezza and Alfie? I've gotten to really hate the Sens-Buf games because they are so one-sided...
plenzmd1 Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Edwards used to be a decent PbP guy when he did games for ESPN2. NESN? Not so much. he is by far the worst play by play guy in the NHL. On that Sekera play when he takes it in the nuts, implies during and right after play Skerera was faking the injury. He and Brick never say anything like "wow, he took one to the nuts" it was all how he was faking. Even after 3 replays they never mention he gets it in the nads. Then to top it off, when Sekera comes back in, he says in his most sarcastic tone"seems like Sekers is right back in" God is he awful
Crestwood Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Now comes another 'real test'. Can we finally beat Heatley, Spezza and Alfie? I've gotten to really hate the Sens-Buf games because they are so one-sided... Is that line still broken up? I remember reading Hartsburg had split those three around the time everyone started getting fed up with Spezza's lackluster performance this year (28 points is nothing to sneeze at, but he's Jason Spezza and he plays in Ottawa). Either way, Ottawa's been pretty lackluster as a whole this year. Here's hoping Buffalo doesn't mail in another home game against a statistically inferior opponent.
deluca67 Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Game thoughts... - Matt Ellis has a hat trick in the 2nd period if not for a great save by Thomas. He is very awkward to watch with the way he swings his arms when skating, but I have to give him credit, he works hard. - The performance by Miller is what is expected of your big contract goalie. - Tallinder still sucks at getting the puck out of his own end when along the boards. On a sidenote, I knew Chara was going to send him flying in the 3rd period. - Great win against a red hot team that before today lost only one game in regulation at home. - I think it is time to see what Butler has on the PK. He has handled the minutes Lindy has given him with poise and there is nothing wrong with throwing a little more his way. -If the Sabres played that way at home, there record wouldn't be around .500. - Nice 2-0 start to the January gauntlet! To continue a previous conversation - this was a great win. Boston on the road is a very big two points. No excuses, no back up goalie.Be the #1 team with their #1 goalie. Something they can build on.

I've gotten to really hate the Sens-Buf games because they are so one-sided... Wish Kaleta was going to be playing this game. Mair will seek some revenge on Neil too that POS!! Great win. I'm calling Ellis "The Beast" today.
Kristian Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Wish Kaleta was going to be playing this game. Mair will seek some revenge on Neil too that POS!! Great win. I'm calling Ellis "The Beast" today. The best thing the Sabres can do is treat Neil like the nobody he is. Everytime Neil is allowed to influence the game, we lose. Ignore this piece of human trash, light his team up on the scoreboard instead.
SabresFan526 Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Kind of late to the topic, but I'm having major jet lag after coming back from vacation. Saw the game, and good win by the Sabres against the best team in the NHL right now. Some people seem to be concerned about the Sabres January schedule, but if you ask me, I anticipate this month being the best month of the season for the Sabres with 10 out of 13 games on the road. Clearly, the Sabres are a much better road team than they are a home team, which is why I'm more confident about this month than any other month in the schedule. As for the game itself, if Matt Ellis is going to be our best player, then as Lindy says, he should get more ice time. I know Dale Hawerchuk's nickname was Ducky, but it seems like that nickname is much more appropriate for Matt Ellis because seriously, the guy looks like a duck on skates. His skating looks like a duck waddling. He's one of the most awkward looking skaters I've seen, but hey with 2 goal games like today, he can be as awkward looking as he wants to be. Miller came up with some huge saves today. I thought overall the team played well. I think the only goal that the Sabres could have gotten back was the first one where the puck passes both Gaustad and Sekera before it goes in. I feel like Gaustad should have been in better position and one of he or Sekera could have blocked the shot, but it is what it is. Either way, Miller played extremely well today overall, and we need huge saves like he made today and he needs to be the best player on this team every night. As for the discussion regarding the third period, I think there are two aspects. As SDS mentions, it looked like Boston controlled the tempo as they had to push the play and control the play as they were the team down by 2. At the same time, the Sabres were playing to protect the lead by playing short shifts, dumping the puck, and playing the trap and collapsing the defense. If you notice, anytime the Sabres get anywhere close to the red line, they'd just dump the puck, change lines, and play the trap. They got almost no forecheck going at all in the third as they wanted to just trap and play defense. I would have at least liked to have seen a bit more time in the offensive zone and a bit more of a forecheck, but there are sometimes where you just have to play to protect the lead because if you're too aggressive offensively, you could end up creating good scoring chances the other way against a very good Boston team that you're better off staying back and collapsing the d and making Boston skate the puck all the way in. Overall, good win and need to keep this going against Ottawa who has really had our number for quite some time.
Foligno's Nose Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 - The performance by Miller is what is expected of your big contract goalie. No kidding. I am a big Miller fan, and always defended him, but this year he has been below average. When has he stole us a win? Otherwise...A tremendous win. They are good enough to qualify for the playoffs, but need to prove it now. And wow!!!...We leaped over Pittsburgh...interesting. Listened to the game today while skiing (first time in 19 years). Sounded like a different squad. The too-many-men penalties are a suprise. Vanek's penalty could have been fatal. Love the contribution from Ellis. Pominville has rediscovered his offensive game. Where the hell has he been all season. He had been breaking enough sticks for a couple campaigns. This team is so much better with Gaustad healthy. It is hard not to get excited about all the small parts on this team coming together. Next Ottawa...those scum! Destroy Alfie and crew!
