carpandean Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Misses out on his Boston homecoming.http://www.buffalonews.com/258/story/538464.html Not too surprised. Bulter "scored" (stupid NHL "scored" = points, not just goals) just as much in his first 6 games. I'm looking forward to seeing Gerbe again in the future, but he needs more time in the AHL to develop.

Some experince can only help and hopefully he is even hungrier the next time he gets to play in the big leagues...
Kristian Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 His "supporting cast" didn't make it easier on him either.
shrader Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 His "supporting cast" didn't make it easier on him either. You mean skating on a line with Roy while he's putting up a 3-4-7 line over 5 games? Yeah, Gerbe's supporting cast was really struggling.

Yeah, Gerbe's supporting cast was really struggling. Does that mean the team didn't stink after all? He was a call-up on a team playing poorly, that usually makes things a little more difficult. But yeah, playing on a line with the "great Derek Roy", he really should've done so much better  /sarcasm mode off

During those same 5 games, their other linemate, Drew Stafford, put up 3-3-6. Roy and Stafford both had 2 PP points over that period, so I'm willing to give you those two, but the picture is pretty clear. Gerbe wasn't putting up points while his linemates were. So you blaming his "supporting cast" for his lack of point production is obviously a bunch of crap. But hey, all you do is complain anyway, so I really shouldn't expect any less.
Guest Sloth Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Guys, calm down. Gerbe did what I was hoping he would do. Gerbe came up to the Sabres w/ a play hard attitude and he did show what he is capable of. You can't base everything on a score sheet.

My blaming his supporting cast for his lack of production is all in your head. Also, nowhere did I say his "supporting cast" were his two linemates. I made the point that Gerbe was called up on a team that didn't play well, which didn't exactly make things easier on him. If you want to argue that, feel free. I can't really see how that can be classified as complaining, making the point that a young players struggles to put up points might have something do with the wider picture. *edit Stupid insulting remark removed.

His game better be one of production or he will be out of the NHL in the blink of an eye.
Kristian Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 What gave that away? 1650 posts? I was wondering when you were going to chime in, but in all honesty and differences aside for 10 seconds - Can you really say you were expecting anything else from a young kid being called up to a team in the state the Sabres are currently in? The coach is calling out players left and right, the players are calling themselves out left and right, and on top of all that you have a winger playing the no. 2 center slot, and the captain is injured. Not exactly a recipe for success, is it?

His game better be one of production or he will be out of the NHL in the blink of an eye. I'm referring only to Gerbe's first trip up to the NHL. His gameplay is what mattered, not the score sheet. I was impressed. When Gerbe returns and receives more ice time the score sheet will matter.

Sure, two games were Tampa, but it's hard to say that the team as a whole played poorly over that time period. If you want to say that his supporting cast is not his linemates, that's fine, but really, who will effect a guys play more than the guys he's out on the ice with? edit: And to sum up my thoughts on the kid, I expected nothing from him at this point. I said it a long time ago and I'll say it again, he's going to take time, a lot more than 3 months, to adjust to the pro game. At his size, there is going to be a much bigger learning curve. Dominating the mostly small but quick Hockey East is a long way away from success at the pro level. He got his cup of tea, and now is the time where he can really grow as a professional hockey player. And yes, I'm throwing out the Caps game. He had little ice time (he did get in one nice dive though), the whole team played like crap, and he was just returning from a semi-longterm injury. I won't hold that against anyone.
Knightrider Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Garth is saying the reason he was sent down is the return of Timmy... It'd be nice if it was for more than a game or two...

Sounds about right...we're due for another handful of games where The Skill gets everyone's hopes up by teasing us with what could be, before he takes a freak shot to the [insert new Tim Connolly injury area HERE] and misses another 20-25 games, all while we bemoan the fact that we don't have a legit no.2 center.

What do you think: a season-ending injury in the March 4 game against Montreal, just hours after the trade deadline expires without Darcy making a move for another center? :o
