smallmarketguy Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Interesting column on how Derek Roy thought Saturday was the best game of his career. Was it really? Looks like he's playing well, but it's so tough to say since the guys around him have been so mediocre. http://www.niagara-gazette.com/prosports/g...=secondarystory
carpandean Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 With the exception of the game against the Capitals -- possibly his worst this season -- he has been playing much better lately. He started the season playing hurt, trying to do too much (stick handling, fancy passing) and not shooting enough. After about 10 games, he turned that around and has been producing consistently again. He still tries to do too much sometimes, like stick handling through three players or forcing a pass through a defenseman (did both of those last night and a lot against the Caps), but he's doing more of the right things, now. Part of it is that he is finally clicking with Stafford and being more of a second line, but part of it is just playing better. Roy will probably never be a true "star" and will always make some of those bad plays, but he creates a lot to make up for it and is pretty sound defensively (not even counting his play on the PK.) At $4 million, he's a great deal. Now, if just had another scoring-line center ...
bflobarry Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Until about a week ago, I was amazed at how poorly Roy was playing. Hecht too. When Lindy called them out by name I was thrilled, b/c I saw the same thing. Roy seems to be a streaky player, and I don't mean points-wise, I mean effort wise. I maintain that he is a second line center, and is being asked to play out of position b/c the only #1 center that we have is Connolly, who is of course out most of the time. I think if we could ever get Connolly feeding Vanek on our #1 line, and get Roy and Pommer going on a #2 line, and Goose and Hecht on our 3rd line, we'd be pretty good. But not REAL good, 'cuz the only defenseman playing well at all is Sekera. And until yesterday in Boston, Miller has also been sub-par. Just my 2 cents....
