Kristian Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 "It's disappointing, it's frustrating and hard to hide from," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "If Jochen Hecht and Derek Roy and those kinds of guys aren't our best players, you don't have any chance of winning. We'll take them out of the lineup. Some of them will come out, and that's not an idle threat, either. You still have to put the work in, and I don't think we did." Good luck Lindy, these golden-boys will never understand what working hard means, and you could sit them every damn night from here to christmas, without any of them ever getting the message. HARD WORK WINS GAMES, LAZINESS AND OVERCONFIDENCE AGAINST REAL NHL TEAMS LOSES GAMES. GET THE #%^$#!ING MESSAGE YOU #%^$#!ING PRINCESSES!!! Sorry, but I just had to get this off my chest. Happy new year to everyone, and sorry if anybody were offended.
dante23x Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 Counting on Jochen Hecht and Derek Roy to be your best players just proves that the team is lacking talent. Derek Roy is good, but better suited in a #2 role. Hecht is a decent 2 way forward but not an offensive star. This team needs to make changes.

It makse the fans feel happy to have guys bang around but it doesnt win games. MSG was tracking hits and we were outhitting the caps 2-1 but were down 3-0. It takes a lot more than being physical, and teams who wins cups have a lot more offensive talent than bangers.
Bmwolf21 Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 I kinda feel bad for Lindy. You know he's got to be fed up with the roster right now, and Darcy is either unable to or refuses to make changes, so he's stuck with a bunch of soft, finesse, lazy players who couldn't give two craps about play south of the red line.
Hirly5 Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 The Sabres have two glaring problems. The obvious one is they don't score goals. The second problem is there passing is as Charles Barkley would say TERRIBLE. I implore my fellow Sabres fans to watch the passing in the next game. They have trouble moving the puck out of their zone but then the craptastic passing continues when they get into the neutral and offensive zone.

I don't know what it is. I mean, aside from the obvious fact that having Derek Roy as your no. 1 center is enough to get most GM's alarm bells to ring frantically, I just think we have too many players who "don't hate losing enough". I mean, nobody likes losing, that's pretty much a given, but do we really have enough of the guys, who'll basically be fuming at a post-game interview over a loss, regardless how the player himself did? I don't think so, and that's probably my biggest concern - Losing doesn't sting enough to these guys, it would seem.
blugold43 Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 what a great time to be a buffalo sports fan!
Hirly5 Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 what a great time to be a buffalo sports fan! It could be worse. You could be a Seattle sports fan. The Seahawks stink, U of Washington went 0-12 (1st time in Pac-10 History), the Mariners stink and they had a high payroll, they lost their NBA franchise to Oklahoma City, and it rains all the time in Seattle. Or you could be from Cleveland where the Browns returned to their crappy selves, the Indians are mediocre, and they have to hear about LeBron leaving after 2010 everyday from the talking heads at the Evil Empire (ESPN). Atleast UB is getting some dap from the national media.

The only difference is that in those two cities, both head coaches are leaving(1 retired, 1 fired) so those fans at least have a reason for hope. In Buffalo, where nothing changes, all we are going to get is the same old same old of mediocrity.

Derek Roy is good, but better suited in a #2 role. Hecht is a decent 2 way forward but not an offensive star. This team needs to make changes. Thats true but still no excuse then for lacking passion and playing with it.. That's my pet peeve with these millionaire's I kinda feel bad for Lindy. You know he's got to be fed up with the roster right now, and Darcy is either unable to or refuses to make changes, so he's stuck with a bunch of soft, finesse, lazy players who couldn't give two craps about play south of the red line. Spot on wolfman  .... also quoted by lindy where you can see his frustration bleeding through...... ?That?s great, that?s great,? Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said sarcastically of the players? desire to ?look in the mirror.? ?I want to see the action. I don?t want to have to give them a two-hour practice tomorrow. I don?t want to grind them into the ice. That should come from them. That should come from them. You saw the effort.? Put in anothers famous words ya can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig.. He can crush them in practices all he wants but if desire does not come from them... what can he do.(darcy you paying attention).. This is a classic "a shakeup is needed" from FO, some of the brat pack needs to be traded to get the message through because they just don't seem to get it. Are you backing your coach or accepting less than efforts? The Sabres have two glaring problems. Good observation and one I also noted watching the games and especially on the power play too many passes in the skates or behind the player as well just poor anticipation by players where the other is going too often, now that can be chalked up to the lack of talent/skill but certainly can be practiced more...
rbochan Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 ...Losing doesn't sting enough to these guys, it would seem. Why would it? They're getting paid HUGE sums of money for their mediocre play regardless.

Derek Roy is good, but better suited in a #2 role. Hecht is a decent 2 way forward but not an offensive star. This team needs to make changes. When I heard that, I was like "what-what-WHAT?!!" I have less of a problem with counting on Roy - other than last night and the first 5-10 games of the season when he was playing hurt, he has been our best offensive player for about a calendar year - but Jochen Hecht should be, at best, the #6 forward on your team. He's a role player and has, historically, been extremely good in that role, but has never been the team's best player. How about Vanek? Pominville? The only thing that I can think of is that Lindy's put Jochen in one of the most important positions and in order for the team to succeed, the person in that position should be one of your best. The problem is, he doesn't have the skillset necessary to be the best person in that position.

He is a not a guy to count on. Perhaps when/if Connolly makes it back, Pominville picks it up. He doesn't even have chances, he's just out there not doing much.
deluca67 Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 Lindy's comments would carry more weight in the locker room if the front office would back him up. Max maybe one of the worst players in franchise history and he still makes it to the lineup. What the Sabres need to do is break up the little tea party the players have going on in that dressing room and send one of the "popular" guys packing. Teammates love Hecht? Great, send him to the Kings for anything they are willing to offer. Time to stop coddling the children and shake things up.
bottlecap Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 if hecht is supposed to be a replacement for briere or drury, ruff is kidding himself. it's sad if hecht is supposed to be one of your best players. we let our best players go and tried to replace them from within. It hasn't worked. kevin dupont of the boston globe said the three things you start with, with a team is a great GM, coach and goalie. sometimes a great goalie is #2 over a coach. Looks like we're zero for 3.ruff, regier and miller have got to go.
Stoner Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 It's amazing to see that some people have forgotten that Jochen Hecht was one of the best players, a real cog in the lineup. So much so that he earned a nice contract. Hasn't been the same since. And he might still be bothered by the hand, who knows? Still, when it's going well this has been a true team with no one or two players to lean on. So it does sound funny for Ruff to call out Hecht as someone the teams need to play well to win.
shoveldog Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 Looks like we're zero for 3.ruff, regier and miller have got to go. Step away from the crack pipe... I'll buy into the fact that Regier sucks and that Miller is not an elite goaltender. But, there is no way you include Lindy in that statement. Lindy has made lemons into lemonade time and time again. He absolutely squeezes  every ounce of ability out of his guys. The trouble with this team right now is lack of on-ice leadership. Rivet, a brand new player on this team is given the captain's C to start the season... what does that say about the "veteran" leadership on your team. Bottom line, we're just not talented enough and the guys we're expecting to lead the team are nothing but role players on any other team in the league. How is that the coach's fault?

Look at the teams ahead of us in the standings and realize they are more talented whether it be big name players or kids producing.
james duncan Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 Exactly. Look at the teams ahead of us in the standings and realize they are more talented whether it be big name players or kids producing. Worse yet, look at the teams behind. Does anyone doubt that the Leafs will make good on their new GM's promise to make them the biggest, nastiest team in the East? I don't expect Ottawa to stay this bad for long either. Darcy has already stated that what we see is what we get. Happy New Year.
carpandean Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 It's amazing to see that some people have forgotten that Jochen Hecht was one of the best players, a real cog in the lineup. So much so that he earned a nice contract. Hasn't been the same since. And he might still be bothered by the hand, who knows? Depends on what you mean by "best". He was always underrated for his contributions, especially defensively and on the PK. When placed with a setup center and a sniper (Briere-Dumont, Briere-Pominville, Connolly-Pominville), he made the line better by covering their own end, mucking in the corners and scoring goals from spots that goalies like to think of as being safe, which keeps them on their toes. He was never, however, considered one of the "best" players in the traditional sense. He didn't score 30+ goals or get 40+ assists. He didn't dominate when he was on the ice. Most of the time, you didn't realize what he contributed until he went out with an injury. As you say, a real "cog" for the team, but not the motor or the ... whatever the end of the machine is in your analogy. In all fairness, since his new contract, he has never been in that same position. He's been asked to be someone that he is not. If Connolly were consistently healthy or if we had brought in another scoring-line center, I doubt that we would be talking about Hecht. He'd be quietly making the team better, as usual. Maybe he's a little overpaid for a player like that, but it's not his fault. You can't pay somebody to be something that they have never been. If we could, I'd rather give Andrew Peters $9 million and stick him in the #1 center position. Could you imagine if 6"4', 247 lbs Peters magically played like Ovechkin?!

Best post in this thread. Couldn't have said it better. This team has no one standing up and knocking heads in the locker room. If there is anyone who I expect to call players out it would be Mair. He seems to be the most passionate on this team. So why isn't he stepping up? Does he just not know how? I mean, I could see that, he's just a hockey player. I just wonder if he's not the creative type to know what to say at the right times. I also expect more from Lalime. He seems like the kind of guy from the interviews I've seen, that would have a lot of locker room pull based on his experience. But maybe he just doesn't think he should as the backup goalie. Either way players like Mair, Goose, Rivet, Lalime and Kaleta need to start a little leadership club and put on clinics on how to play with passion. And pleaaaase Darcy, shake something up. As much as I expect better from this team after the off season, something clearly needs to happen now. Now where'd I put that list of veteran free agents...
inkman Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 Losing doesn't sting enough to these guys, it would seem. Why would it? They're getting paid HUGE sums of money for their mediocre play regardless. Money has nothing to do with it. Plenty of the highest paid players in the league are actually the best players in the league.

I saw that the team had someone on the roster named Rivet in the preseason but I haven't seen him since then!
thesportsbuff Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 He absolutely squeezes every ounce of ability out of his guys. Well, obviously not.
