I've said it for the last 3 years...and it still applies now, even though they arent as good as the last couple of years. You can't take stupid penalties against Montreal and expect to win. They have too many weapons.

Even without Souray they are still potent a man up. That second penalty was a little iffy too. I'm sure Jackson had a party to get to so he can celebrate his 1,000th game as an official and didn't want to have to wait through a shootout. Two penalties in OT, that's BS.

They played a great game until the OT. Atleast its a point but seriously what the #%^$#!.

As much as I want to blame it on the refs, the penalties weren't horrid calls, they were too dumb turnovers one by the turnover machine and one by a crap defensemen. Both valid calls. Its stupid when you are dumb enough to commit two penalties in overtime. Up until then though... pretty solid game. I hope this loss doesn't get them down again cause i'd like to see in general more of what happened today (minus the last 15 minutes of the game)

Lindy, I just have one question. Why is max on the ice in OT?

"Hes dangerous with the space".

I guess hes also dangerous to us when he has the puck.

Having him out there is like playing Hot Potato with a grenade. Except its more likely to go off on us than on them

Oh, and I didn't say anything in yesterday's GDT because others agreed with it and I figured I would just keep my mouth shut. But I don't think Lydman's been above average. I think he is very average. What was he doing on that game tieing goal?

Lots to like about this game, but oh so many mistakes added up in the end. Only good thing is that the Hab fans can cheer and sing all they want, but their team is gonna be getting in lots of golf this spring, just like the Sabres.

I won't rail on the refs. The interference call on Ellis was suspect. Never got a good look at the alleged interference on Miller. Was watching on MSG.

BUT...

What's up with honoring a ref in Montreal before a game, the ref being from Montreal. Total bush league move. Didn't affect anything in the game, I'm pretty sure, but hey these guys are human. At the very least it put him in a helluva spot. I don't get this league sometimes. Can you imagine an NFL ref from Buffalo being honored before a game at the Ralph?

Lydman has played very well this year except when he plays with Tallinder. That pairing picks up right where they left off last year playing awfully. When Lydman has been paired with someone else, he has played much better. I don't know what it is, but those two should not be played together ever again. Unfortunately, they probably will be until Rivet gets back.

I disagree...kind of. Even with Rivet he still gets caught watching the play instead of going to the guy who is eventually going to get the pass and making sure he doesn't get it. Like tonight. Maybe it's the quality of his partner that makes up for his play that makes him look better?

Its the same call that was called against us in the second amazing how the refs can call it one time miss it the next.

The referee's really were inconsistent on that one and we deserved a 5-3 call with what was going out there allot more than the one they gave Montreal. Either call them all or don't call them at All. <_<

This has been a very entertaining game to watch.. Been great chances by both teams...

yes it was.

Nothing new there. Another ill-advised drop pass by Max turns into a turnover/penalty...
Lindy, I just have one question. Why is max on the ice in OT?

I just don't know why we have not traded him even for a bag of pucks, hell send him to the minors he'd have to pass waivers and maybe someone would pick him and his salary up.

Why couldn't Sekera play the whole 65 minutes tonight? Great game out of him.

He and spacek played some good hockey and that kid Butler didn't look bad either

All in all not a bad game, I am the first to complain when the efforts not there but they did pretty good tonight for the second back to back and considering the uneven officiating, they showed spunk and tenacity which is important even if you do lose.

Some other Observations;

-Kotalik has not added much lately offensively or defensively and needs to stop being a passenger and start contributing

-Hecht also didn't do much and seems to whiff the simplist of plays at time clearing or pass, I just got to wonder if that hand is really all right

-Stafford looked good again tonight and the roy, stafford line has been very good but Vanek is suffering with Hecht as his center

-Pominville and Paille need to start contributing like they belong.

-The other defenseman didnt have a great game tonight but you all saw that, but man Tallinder is a big guy and if he just used his size and had some attitude he could be allot more effective.

Kotalik is almost aproaching Max status in giveaways. And sometimes he just doesn't skate. He really is becoming a liability. Unless he gets a slapper opportunity from ten feet out he's useless.

Good call on Hecht's hand. They had a closeup of him looking at it during the game. I still don't think he had that bad of a game, though.

I disagree with PA. The refs gave them 2 of their four points.

- Harry Neale is completely out of it. When they showed the teams records in OT just prior to it starting, he stated that those records also reflect 4 on 4 play in regulation. SAY WHAT?

- Miller with a bad angle goal in OT. I don't care how many saves he made, that is one that can't find the back of the net.

- Roy & Tallinder with just a horrible play on the 3rd goal. They are along the boards with Kovalev, but yet allow him to skate away with the puck and pass it in front for a goal.

- 80+ shots against in 2 games is not going to get them in the playoffs. The fact that they were able to get 3 out of 4 points is amazing.

-Max Max Max! If I didn't know better, Id' swear you are trying to force Darcy to trade you with some of the bonehead plays you make.

Ridiculous officiating tonight.

Where did Lydman hold anybody on that 'penalty' to put them down 5-3.

Where did Hecht hold anybody in OT?

Come on!

It's hard enough to win in the NHL without having to consistently beat the officials, too.

Pittsburgh and Montreal, two of the 'Privileged Teams'.

FU NHL!

Butler needs to keep this up as long as he's with the team. He plays a very smart game, doesn't try anything crazy, which leads to almost no mistakes. It's one thing to do that in two games, but the next step is consistency. Right now he's showing signs of being someone who will help this team quite a bit in the near future (especially once he realizes when he can take some of the right chances).

Officiating really seems to have gone to hell this season. I've walked away from more than one game shaking my head this year.

I want to see a different replay, but he wasn't down (at least not all the way), was tight against the post and it looked like it hit off the crossbar, possibly after catching the top of his jersey left of his neck. I saw the few replays that they showed and still couldn't figure out how it found its way in.

Side note: I'm just now watching the first period and am reminded of the post-lockout "New NHL". I had forgotten how exciting the back-and-forth rushes with tons of scoring chance was to watch. It seems like both teams forgot to "lock down" on defense.

Upon further review, from the overhead angle, Ellis throws a pretty good elbow at Halak, whose head snapped back. Why the head snapped back is open to debate. As Brian McCutcheon said after the game, you just can't put yourself in the position to have those calls made.
