Stoner Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 http://www.buffalonews.com/258/story/524811.html Upper body is head this time, I think. A bright young player starts down the long road of head injuries. Sad. When is the league going to address head shots? Oh yeah, never.
Hawerchuk Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 Dammit, just when I thought he was going to get his first goal soon. Kaleta is back. Hope he can smack some people around.
Spudz Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 I didn't see the game and wasn't aware he was injured. You mention head shots? Does this mean he be concussed? Can someone explain what happened a little more?

Can someone explain what happened a little more? He caught several pretty big hits. I didn't see one in particular to his head, but it's certainly possible that he could be concussed. It's also possible though that it's ribs/shoulder/collarbone/other. I didn't see him looking dazed and confused.

Unfortunately, it was also one big guy and one smaller guy, so he guy hit high on one side and low on the other. I don't know if it was a concussion, but he definitely looked like he was seeing little birdies flying around his head when he was sitting on the bench.

Looked to me like he took a knee to the head. typical buffalo situation
LabattBlue Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 This is what was reported the next day in the Buffalo News... ...Gerbe left the game with about 11 minutes left in the third period after suffering what he thought was a muscle strain. It appeared to happen when we was clipped earlier in the game by Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner. Gerbe said it was not serious. "It's nothing that's going to keep me out," he said. "I couldn't get a read on who it was. I probably would have gone after him."
carpandean Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 "It's nothing that's going to keep me out," he said. "I couldn't get a read on who it was. I probably would have gone after him." That's what I love about this kid. He's 5'6", 165 lbs and it wouldn't matter if the guy who hit him was 6'5", 250 lbs, he really would have gone after him. He's like our own Rudy! I can just picture Jon Favreau sitting in the stands. "He's so little!"
tom webster Posted December 16, 2008 Author Report Posted December 16, 2008 Not to state the obvious but given his size, its not exactly like an opposing player has to leave his feet to hit him in the head. Anyway, like Blue and others have pointed out, it doesn't appear to be a head injury.
Stoner Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 Looked to me like he took a knee to the head. typical buffalo situation Unless Langenbrunner has a knee where his elbow should be... no.

In this league, who really knows when it comes to injuries. I thought he definitely got elbowed in the head. Speaking of that, tom, are short players fair game?
nobody Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 So, cotract experts, does time on IR count towards NHL experience?
tom webster Posted December 16, 2008 Author Report Posted December 16, 2008 Yeah, but as carp points out, he had THAT look on the bench. In this league, who really knows when it comes to injuries. I thought he definitely got elbowed in the head. Speaking of that, tom, are short players fair game? No, but the point is an average size player following through on his check will give the appearance of head-hunting when he hits a player 6 inches shorter. By the way, it is no coincidence that certain players continue to end up with more severe head injuries. Most players have the inate ability to avoid certain hits while some are just prone to the same. Size has little to do with it. For reference, see the Lindros brothers versus guys like Fleury and St.Louis.
That Aud Smell Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 Most players have the inate ability to avoid certain hits while some are just prone to the same. Size has little to do with it. For reference, see the Lindros brothers versus guys like Fleury and St.Louis. so true. one of the most incalculable things in contact sports is how to quantify the varying abilities that players have to stay healthy -- some have an uncanny knack for playing at full speed while also keeping their moving parts in good order, others can't set foot on a practice field/rink without calamity befalling them, most players fall somewhere in between the two extremes.
shrader Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 That's what I love about this kid. Barnabov Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 Didn't Gerbe go after someone later in the game after getting sandwiched and throw a pretty good check? Maybe I'm remembering wrong - it all gets a little hectic towards the end of the year. The sandwich hit didn't look that bad just embarassing. Ruff said team doctors found something after Monday practice - would make me think maybe a bone break somewhere which would be a lot better than a concussion.
carpandean Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 5'4 State your source. I've seen him listed anywhere from 5'4" to 5'7". On sabres.nhl.com, he is listed at 5'6". Not saying that is correct, but I'm curious what your source is. Did he say 5'4"?
Claude Balls Posted December 17, 2008 Report Posted December 17, 2008 [/b] No, but the point is an average size player following through on his check will give the appearance of head-hunting when he hits a player 6 inches shorter. For reference, see the Lindros brothers versus guys like Fleury and St.Louis. Exactly. More times than not, if someone hits Gerbe they will most likely be hitting him in the head just because of his size. It would be almost impossible for someone 8-10 inches taller than him to avoid contact with his head, especially when their shoulders are right around Gerbe's head. I can see him taking quite a few unintentional elbows and shoulders in the future.

Having seen the kid plenty of times both on and off the ice over the last 3 years, that 5'6 figure is laughable.

I don't care if it's the corpse of Herv? Villechaize. If you can lose a playoff series because someone's stick came up inadvertently and the victim was lucky enough to bleed, you can lose one because someone wasn't in control of his body. Gerbe's already being targeted. The mentality seems to be that of several on this thread. "Hey, I can't help it if the guy is short." This game makes me want to take a long shower sometimes.

And one of those Devils was Langenbrunner, with an uncalled elbow to the head, IIRC.
2ForTripping Posted December 17, 2008 Report Posted December 17, 2008 Yes. And one of those Devils was Langenbrunner, with an uncalled elbow to the head, IIRC. It was an elbow , I just saw the clip on You Tube, Langenbrunner snuck it in . Mighty Mouse was a bit foggy after the snadwiching he took. In the clip it looks as if he is trying to get the number of who clipped him with the elbow. The penalty wasn't called it fell through the cracks, BUT, his team mates should have answered the bell and dropped the hammer on a Devils playerwith one of those "sneaky" hits.
