dante23x Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/story/518270.html I can't say I have ever heard of a ref saying something like that to a player.
Two or less Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 wow thats crazy. I believe it. Those refs were whack jobs.
dante23x Posted December 9, 2008 Author Report Posted December 9, 2008 wow thats crazy. I believe it. Those refs were whack jobs. He probably asked the ref if he was wearing a Crosby jersey under his referee shirt.
That Aud Smell Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 i'll be the first to say it: there's a decent chance that miller should go f**k himself. :bag:
Claude Balls Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 I hope Miller's soft ego didn't hurt, we don't want him letting in any weak goals or anything. The refs take so much abuse and get called every name in the book by players all game long. There is nothing strange about this to me. Miller said he was respectfully asking a the ref a question, maybe the ref was respectfully telling him to go #%^$#! himself.
Wraith Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Miller said he was jokingly asking a the ref a question, maybe the ref was jokingly telling him to go #%^$#! himself. Miller did not say he was jokingly asking the ref a question. Reading comprehension is a good thing, people.

Claude Balls Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 Miller did not say he was jokingly asking the ref a question. Reading comprehension is a good thing, people. Yes it is. Now go back and re-read my post. This is a hockey discussion board anyhow, not English class. And I mean that respectfully.
will Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 goes in line with the penguin fan flipping the bird behind the sabres celebration after piepie's goal. what a sour face.
shrader Posted December 9, 2008 Report Posted December 9, 2008 i'll be the first to say it: there's a decent chance that miller should go f**k himself. :bag: Exactly. Notice how the story doesn't mention what Miller's question was. He can spin it however he wants, but if the ref actually responded like that, Miller more than likely was pushing the line with whatever he said... not that this in any way excuses the ref if he did in fact say that.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense that the penalty was on Miller. Lindy was not a raving lunatic on the bench nor were the players upset on the bench. He seemed surprised and asked on who... It had to be one of the skaters on the ice. If a ref decides to throw the f-bomb your way, chances are pretty good that someone challenged their play calling, manhood or lineage...

If a ref decides to throw the f-bomb your way, chances are pretty good that someone challenged their play calling, manhood or lineage... It definitely came from someone on the ice at the time. I was listening to the game in the car on the radio and RJ said that it came from someone who was on the ice because the refs were making Lindy send someone to the box who was on the ice at the time of the incident. That's why Gerbe ended up serving the penalty. I don't know why, if it was on Miller, it wouldn't have then been called an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Miller, or whomever the player on the ice was.
SabresFan526 Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Actually, I did notice something, and if I were to guess I think this is where it happened. I want to say it was in the second period in the defensive zone, and there was a faceoff to the left of Miller. It was a clean draw, but then all of a sudden the referee, not the lineseman dropping the puck, blew his whistle and went over to Miller and looked like he was yelling at him. He was really lecturing and scolding Miller and I could not understand what was happening. This is why I'm not surprised to see this story today because I seriously thought that ref had no business yelling at Miller as Miller did nothing on the play nor to the ref, but the guy just blew the whistle on a clean faceoff draw only to yell at Miller. Then the Vs. crew panned the camera away and it was like a 15-30 second delay before they actually dropped the puck. I thought the officiating was absolutely wretched last night and when one team gets 8 penalties with three 5-on-3 situations and the other only gets 2 penalties, it is clearly slanted officiating.
darksabre Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 He probably asked the ref to drop the friggin puck

Agree on the officiating. But where is it written that calls have to even out? Maybe I'm giving Lindy too much credit, but I wonder if Miller talking about the ref is an old fashioned ploy -- you know, "us against the world." RJ can do his "we get no respect" impersonation of Rodney. Hecht drops the gloves in TB. Sabres rise up and kill off the penalties in Pittsburgh. Maybe I'm onto something here. What this team needs is a rallying cry!
Bmwolf21 Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 I'm not going to embed the videos, but there are a couple clips on YouTube where the refs have been caught dropping f-bombs at players: (about :10 in) (about halfway through) EDIT: Obviously I would tag both of these as NSFW. As for the Miller incident - I really don't want to form an opinion without some verified context. Was Miller chirping at him all night? Was what he said really a "simple question" or was it something that could be interpreted as sarcastic or smartass? If it was unprovoked, then yes, it should be addressed by the league. I don't know what's an appropriate disciplinary action, if anything, but you'd like that respect thing to go both ways.
Corp000085 Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Lalime might be in the lineup sooner than we thought! I suspect that Miller may either get a hefty fine or be suspended for a game. With that said, someone please facewash crosby on his first shift the next time they meet?
spndnchz Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Maybe Miller told his Yo-momma-ween joke? :bag:
... Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Uh, Ruff and Miller aren't morons. I think if either of them were in the wrong here, they'd be quiet about it and let the episode pass. There's clearly more to this story than we know. Perhaps the Sabres are tired of the slanted officiating and this was just the opportunity they were looking for to start an "open dialogue" on the matter.
SabresFan526 Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Lalime might be in the lineup sooner than we thought! I suspect that Miller may either get a hefty fine or be suspended for a game. With that said, someone please facewash crosby on his first shift the next time they meet? I don't think so on this one. I read a report, I think from John Wawrow from the AP that stated the NHL is investigating Miller's complaint. Looks like the Sabres filed an official complaint with the league regarding the referee's conduct, which leads me to believe that Miller will not get fined or suspended as it seems he's not in the wrong. Also, if you read Miller's quote, he's very measured in what he says and he does not criticize the referee per se, but simply states the ref swore at him and he was asking a question respectfully, and he doesn't publicly call out the ref, either. So, I think nothing will happen to Miller and at worst case the ref in question may get reprimanded, but I don't think Miller's in trouble on this one. Just my opinion.
SwampD Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 I really couldn't care less about a ref that says that. I'm more pissed that Roy got a BS tripping call when he was skating completely upright and just happened to run into Crosby's swollen labia. Giving them yet another power-play in the third.

Like I said above, the refs swear at the players almost as much as the players swear at them. This is not out of the ordinary, so I don't know why they are making a big deal of it. Now what is said during a fight is real fun stuff. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzEek1eIuz8&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzEek1eIuz8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
