dante23x Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 http://www.buffalonews.com/494/story/516918.html I don't like being negative all the time, but this is a mistake. I just don't believe the team as is, is good enough to win. Simple as that. The usual company line from Darcy though, no surprises.
nobody Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 Didn't ever expect to hear anything else from Darcy.
LabattBlue Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 Though he says he inquires daily about the availability of other teams? talent, the Sabres? general manager believes in the squad he has assembled. He says the guys wearing blue and gold are the ideal ones to create a winning atmosphere. ?Yeah, I do, because I think that if you talk to the players, if you talk to the coaches, if you talk to me, we all feel that as a group we?re capable of more,? Regier said this weekend. ?Yet everyone is aware that we all have to do our own jobs. You can?t do each other?s jobs because that doesn?t solve the problem. I think collectively everyone feels that we have been better, we can be better, and we need to be better. That needs to come from within right now.? Not what I want to read after another disgusting Sunday of Buffalo Bills football!
Bmwolf21 Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 Awesome. Darcy fiddles while the Sabres burn.
inkman Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 Didn't ever expect to hear anything else from Darcy.
LabattBlue Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 What did you expect? I expect him to be burning up the phone lines instead of being interviewed by the News and stating a bunch of crap that makes him sound like an idiot!
carpandean Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 I understand the sentiments being expressed about Darcy, but what did you expect him say? Until he makes a move, is it going to help to say "this team sucks and without help won't go anywhere." I agree that the team is capable of more than 3 of 11, but I also believe that they need help to be anywhere near what that their initial record indicated. However, right now, having not made a move, the team does need to solve its problems as best than can from within. Right now, they have the talent to win hard games if they play close to flawless. They've proved that by beating just about every one of the top teams in the EC. However, the margin of error is small and they are mentally still weak. They've proved that by losing to just about every one of the bottom teams in the EC. With the talent that they have now, they are probably a 7th-9th place team. With some good luck, they might reach 5th-6th and with some bad luck, they'll be down in the 10th-12th range. With the right moves, addition and subtraction, they could reduce that margin of error and reliance on "puck luck" in order to make the playoffs. I am encouraged that Darcy would even admit that he is inquiring daily about the availability of other teams' talent. Other than talking about Max this Summer, that's not the type of thing that Darcy would normally admit.

Darcy is right, what is he suppose to do? Ales, Drew, Clarke, Daniel Jochen, Gaustad all blow when it comes to actual stats. The defense is playing like crap, Tim is always hurt which i guess we can all say it's Darcy's fault for resigning him and Max just stinks beyond believe which is also a horrible move by Darcy. But there is no excuse of how pathetic most of the team is playing. This team is pretty much a 3 man show, Vanek, Roy and Pominville. Everyone else needs to just STEP UP! I'm not saying Paille needs to have Vanek numbers, but come on! All this speed, skill and all you have is 2 goals??? what a joke. Our 2nd line Center has 7pts! 7!! would it be so much to ask of a 2nd line center to have idk 14pts perhaps?
That Aud Smell Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 is it going to help to say "this team sucks and without help won't go anywhere." great post - i agree 100%. the excerpted portion made me laugh, just at the mere thought of that happening.
bob_sauve28 Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 Well.....if Hecht, Pommer, Paille, Stafford, Goose and a few others start to live up to about half of their expected potential this team would be doing pretty well.
2ForTripping Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 I expect him to be burning up the phone lines instead of being interviewed by the News and stating a bunch of crap that makes him sound like an idiot! Darcy is under the puppet masters control he is just a mouthpiece. He claims to be working the phones on a daily basis just fishing I suppose, we'll see.Wouldn't it be nice if he pulled the trigger on a nice trade for Christmas yeah I know I must have the visions of sugar plums but it would be a nice present
dante23x Posted December 8, 2008 Author Report Posted December 8, 2008 great post - i agree 100%. the excerpted portion made me laugh, just at the mere thought of that happening. My problem is that this team should not be rebuilding. We went to two straight ECF and weren't good enough to win then (except against Carolina) and there has been no attempt to improve the team to get past that point. The team wasn't good enough last year to win and clearly isn't this year. I do agree that the team has to play flawless in order to be really good, and that isn't realistic. So if the goal is to make the Finals as Larry Quinn proclaimed at the beginning of the season, then why aren't we making the adjustments necessary for that to happen instead of just spinning our wheels with the same players as last year?

Our 2nd line Center has 7pts! 7!! would it be so much to ask of a 2nd line center to have idk 14pts perhaps? yeah, I got to agree with you...I think it's fair to say that most of us here at one point or another (I said most, so those of you who are going to say "NOT ME!!!", save it) thought that there was enough talent here to compete for the playoffs and maybe even a division title. Who'd have thunk Boston would have surpassed the Sabres this year. But turnarounds can be quick. If everyone would start to play towards their ability, not even to their ability, we would be winning 2 of 3 games every week instead of losing 2 of 3. Is toughness still an issue? Yes. but I think we are tougher this year than last just by the Rivet addition alone.

I said the same thing 2 years ago and was roasted....Posts I remember in response to my questions are we should be adding not subtracting were " They didnt win with these guys and we arent going to so we need to change them"Mind boggling...They had the core group but instead of adding to them they got rid of the real players and pawned us the wannabees...Now we have a wannabee playoff team..Nobody on this team is gonna make anyone tighten their laces and play out of this funk..Team needs leadership and toughness neither comes cheap....And Darcy wont pay the price to bring in the ones that can help..We were lucky the ones we had before only cost us Warrener and Gratton and Grosek...Otherwise we wouldnt have had them either

A great 4th liner. He's mis-used by Lindy Ruff. No way you should be dissing Paille. It's NOT a joke, it's a JOKE that you call Paille out for not scoring!

carpandean Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 Our 2nd line Center has 7pts! 7!! would it be so much to ask of a 2nd line center to have idk 14pts perhaps? Since they both have seven points, I don't know whether you mean our real (i.e., penciled in that position to start the season) second-line center who can't play for more than five games before getting injured again or the guy that we've been forced to use in that spot who is at best a third-line center or maybe a second-line winger (with mad props due for his PK abilities.) In either case, yes, it would be much nicer if we had a capable second line center. (Note: since tone gets lost in typing, I am not arguing with you at all, this is mostly a joke about how both bad options have only seven points.)

I'd love to see Paille play with Vanek and Roy. Imagine how much better R&V would be if they had a guy on there line that could losen up the puck for them.

Claude Balls Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 At least Russ Brandon said the Bills play is inexcusable. Now him actually doing something about it, that's a whole other story. DR is just a complete idiot. Basically saying, what you see is what you get. They just need to play better??? WTF Darcy, you can't polish a turd dumbass. Underachieving is a problem and telling these guys to step it up or benching them for a game or two definitely is not the answer.

So if the goal is to make the Finals as Larry Quinn proclaimed at the beginning of the season, then why aren't we making the adjustments necessary for that to happen instead of just spinning our wheels with the same players as last year? I agree 100 percent. 1 period away from the Stanley Cup finals and a year later were rebuilding? I dont get it either. Our team in the 06 playoffs was almost flawless. We had every dimension covered. Plenty of offense,a good amount of grit,THE DEFENSE COLLAPSED TOWARD THE NET AND BLOCKED SHOTS. Everything was in place. I understood letting Dumont go,becasue of the up and coming Pominville. Mc Kee was a different story at the time. His salary might of been to high to sign him,and in hindsight his health became an issue. Letting Grier go was a huge mistake, imo. He quitetly kept this team in line, and at 1.75 a year, its not like it would of killed us to keep him. They did sign Spacek who basically replaceed Mc Kee,but hes fallen far short of what we expected. Fast forward a year, and the lack of grit and defense in the playoffs gets us killed. Then management looks down and watches the defenisve, gritty minded Ducks destory Ottawa in the finals and no one looks around and goes, "They remind me of our team last year". The Ducks of 07' weren't entirly a goon squad by any means. They could score as well. So.. what does management do in the offseason? "Clears cap space",by letting our damn captains sign away! Briere, imo, wasn't worth signing. But Drury? I'll leave it at that. Suddenly Dru's gone, and all of the character on this team is gone as well. Zubrus is a hard case to define. Everyone knew he was going to be a rental for the playoffs. But why let him go to,after letting Danny and Dru sign away? Imagine Zubrus playing with Roy and Vanek right now! They weren't prepared to pay him 3.4 a season? They'd rather pay Pominville 5.3 a year. A couple smart moves in the 07' offseason would of brought us to the finals. But the dumb ones they made(and the smart ones they wont) might keep us out of the playoffs 2 years in a row.

Claude Balls Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 We already know what we have with most of the players on the team. Like Max, are we still waiting for him to develop??? Max is on Darcy's 10 year plan, so he has a few years left.
shrader Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 You know what the real joke is, this so called 4th liner, was a first round draft pick. While I don't agree with that "4th line" label, I do know that I'd gladly take Paille over such notable 2002 1st round draft picks like Pet Taticek, Eric Nystrom, Jesse Niinimaki, Jakub Klepis, Jakub Koreis, Ben Eager, Martin Vagner, Mike Morris, or Jonas Johansson. Yes, it's still a bit early to be making a final evaluation on many of these guys, but the 20th overall pick is far from a guarantee. Like I said a week or so back when this came up, take a look at that draft. It was a pretty weak one as a whole. If he does end up being a solid lockdown forward, I can live with that.
