spndnchz Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 Ok, Long time Sabres Fan and I watch every game form the comfort of my living room on Center Ice in Raleigh. Hiring Laviolette would be a total downgrade. Sure he beat ruff and won the cup, but mainly because we had a couple of defensemen left and really were down to 1. We still played our off! Ruff is still the man for the job. He has to reach these guys and if he could convince Darcy to trade one of the biggest names packed with Conolloy and Max maybe even Miller he might get a response! On Laviolette, isn't odd that Carolina things the right step is backward? The truth is we have a huge problem that affects our stye of play......WE DON"T WIN FACEOFF"S! Miller can ill afford to freeze the puck, because we cannot win the draw! I personally would like to see Rivet, Conolly, and Max traded in a Danny Gare type deal. Besides, I'd fire Ruff if we could obtain BrinD'amour from 3 years ago! He, as the captain could not get the team to respond to Laviolette. Also, has anyone else noticed that Max,Kotalik,Gerbe, Mancari, Stafford, Numminen seem not to want to play hockey in the Buffalo zone.Gerbe is too young and needs to play in the AHL longer! He provided energy, but was basicly throwing blind pucks at the net. He is incredibly small! Never realized it but Mighty Mouse he may be! No physical presence guaranteed! Just my take, but any posts with over 7 exclamation points and spelling/grammatical errors turns me off no matter what U say. ;)
inkman Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 He has to reach these guys and if he could convince Darcy to trade one of the biggest names packed with Conolloy and Max maybe even Miller he might get a response! Well, that isn't going to happen. What's your other plan? WE DON"T WIN FACEOFF"S! Miller can ill afford to freeze the puck, because we cannot win the draw! With Goose back in the lineup, our faceoff % should increase dramatically, although I wouldn't mind seeing Max moved for a faceoff scpecialist. I personally would like to see Rivet, Conolly, and Max traded in a Danny Gare type deal. Connolly is untradeable, Max might get you a draft pick and why trade Rivet? FBOW, he's the captain, he's not going amnywhere. Also, has anyone else noticed that Max,Kotalik,Gerbe, Mancari, Stafford, Numminen seem not to want to play hockey in the Buffalo zone. While some Sabres have defensive lapses, this statement seems arbitrarily obtuse. Many other Sabres are suffering from the same deficiencies. Gerbe is too young and needs to play in the AHL longer! He provided energy, but was basicly throwing blind pucks at the net. He is incredibly small! Never realized it but Mighty Mouse he may be! No physical presence guaranteed! Meh...I think you may be over analyzing one game.
Stoner Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 ink, the Sabres are still 29th in the league even with Gaustad back in the lineup for over a month now (and were 25th last year). Sabres haven't been decent on draws since 06-07 when Drury was near 60% in the regular season before struggling in the playoffs. Gaustad's probably a little overrated in this area -- Roy still by far takes the most draws. Derek has to be much, much better. Especially on the road where he's sitting at 44%. I'm glad you brought up faceoffs. They are killing this team. I don't think it's necessarily a reflection of lost talent like Drury but a team the past two seasons that loses focus, won't bear down and doesn't always work hard. A lot of faceoffs are not won cleanly and go to the team that just wants it more.
spndnchz Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 Not sure where to put this but these clips from Lindy's recent "roast" are funny. The best one from Harry Neal something like this: "At the start of training camp they have everyone take physicals, the players the staff, the coaches. When Lindy went they asked him for a stool, urine and sample. Lindy said "okay, here's my underwear". http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/b...bctid6734098001

Man hasn't said anything original since the 60s. Edit: Harry reads the Poop Report! http://www.poopreport.com/poll/which_type.html

spndnchz Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Bump. So many threads so little time... Pat Quinn under his breath says Lindy got a break. "When I lost my job in Toronto, it was my seventh year. In the time I was there, we'd played the second-most playoff games of any team in the league. Then we miss the playoffs by one point and I lose my job." Quinn said in a telephone interview from his home in Vancouver yesterday. "I had one job offer three weeks after I was fired," he said of a chance to coach the Boston Bruins. "Then nothing. "I look around and it's funny. Some places you get some extra time. Some guys miss playoffs five of seven years and are still working." Paging Mr. Ruff Lindy Ruff please call ur fans

Ruff makes meals out of scraps; Quinn made the Sunday brunch buffet at Adam's Mark look like Nick Tahou's joint.

Ruff makes meals out of scraps; Quinn made the Sunday brunch buffet at Adam's Mark look like Nick Tahou's joint. right on.. that's not even a comparison between what Quinn had and what Ruff makes do with.. this just sounds like sour grapes on Quinn's part - Ruff is widely respected around the league by his peers
nfreeman Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 right on.. that's not even a comparison between what Quinn had and what Ruff makes do with.. this just sounds like sour grapes on Quinn's part - Ruff is widely respected around the league by his peers It does seem like kind of a cheap shot, doesn't it? Maybe Quinn is still bitter about Lindy beating him in the conf. finals in 1999. And I completely agree about the uneven playing field -- Quinn never had to endure a bankruptcy or bozo ownership/management losing his best players to free agency.
Stoner Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Awesome quote by Quinn. It's good to know that some in the hockey community recognize the coaching farce in Buffalo. And, again, it's amazing that Ruff's biggest "fans" continue to damn him with faint praise. "Oh, he would have won if only... Give him great players and he'll win..."

I guess I don't understand the criteria.... I thought the team was at a disadvantage most the year...especially up the middle and matching lines. In terms of personnel the team was designed to overmatch teams with balanced lines....it couldn't...it couldn't by a long margin. PP was good PK was good Goaltending was solid In terms of composition, this team just does not have a shutdown line........ So if you are Lindy, who do you match against Healtly-Spezza-Alfredson? (who ate the Sabres alive).....there wasn't an answer... The same was true of top lines on marginal teams.....Kovulchuck in Atlanta for example.... Coaching? Yeah sure, some of it. But coaching is about creating and managing the mismatches. He's been playing Euchre without the bowers.
X. Benedict Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 It is time...I have loved Lindy...but his tenure needs to be over..hire Laviolette! God, no.

Good special teams, solid goaltending... what kept this team from making the playoffs?
Stoner Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 The Wings are successful mainly because of Mike Babcock, right? IMHO the Wings are more about system and organizational belief than overpowering talent. Lots of coaches would choke on the opportunity in Detroit, especially with the injuries they've had (ECF 06 comes to mind). Ruff is one of them. El Crusho! Next...
Eleven Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 He's been playing Euchre without the bowers. Perfect analogy.

And now we spiral downward into insanity. The Red Wings have 3 defenseman who are better than any of the Sabres' D (2006 or current), and 4 forwards who are better than any of the Sabres' forwards (same).
X. Benedict Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 1. "There wasn't an answer." Good coaches, "elite" ones like Ruff, find answers. 2. Good special teams, solid goaltending... what kept this team from making the playoffs? 1. It's a GMs league......usually the answer is to fire a coach or change players. What happened in Tampa was farce...Ted Nolan on the Island was farce too.... When for half the season the best option was to double-shift Roy on the scoring and checking line ....I would say there is a personnel problem, but from a coaching standpoint, still the right decision. 2. Lack of depth and 1 win. and Couldn't match 5x5, trade points with, or shut down - Spezza Kovulchuk Richards Staal Malkin
Spudz Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 My 2 cents on Babcock At first i thought, okay his job is easy. Takes a system team who prides themselve on scouting and grooming future players and just leads them. The more I hear from him the more I like him. You never hear his players talking junk, he acts as a front man at pressers for a very veteran team (not needing them to get involed), and consistantly makes good decisions on line changes and even goalie situations. Would you name Osgood your playoff starter in '08? I thought he'd stink it up, but has def. proven otherwise. I really really like him now, and respect the job he does. He knows he is there to steady the ship and coaches to the style the team was meant for. I'd be willing to bet a bunch of other ego style coaches might force something they shouldn't be doing. for Mike Babcock
nobody Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Maybe Quinn was hoping that Lindy was fired so he could get the Sabres job?

And, again, it's amazing that Ruff's biggest "fans" continue to damn him with faint praise. "Oh, he would have won if only... Give him great players and he'll win..." One thing that worries me with Ruff, is his seeming inability to win the "big game". The IIHF final against Russia is still in recent memory, where his Team Canada looked just like Buffalo playing Florida on a Sunday afternoon, and of course ended up losing. Team Canada had the players, yet went out and played the worst three periods of hockey they played throughout the entire competition. "Give him the players and he will win"? It's one game and it's not really fair to base an opinion on one game, but seeing as others are ready to base theirs on NO games, I'll do it anyway : So far his track record says "no". But honestly, who the heck cares anyway these days - Buffalo are so far from ever playing in a big game again, my point is.... Well, pointless
wonderbread Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 Buffalo playing Florida on a Sunday afternoon, and of course ended up losing. IMO Quote of the year! As soon as I started reading I knew what the ending would be.

I think it's that dopey accent. Once you get past that, you see that he really knows what the hell he's doing. I'm always shocked at the depth of his responses at post game pressers, even compared to other coaches, not my own kiddy pool depth knowledge. I like Lindy enough to let him go and win somewhere else. Change for the sake of change.
