Injuries force Sabres hand; Weber recalled

Portland, ME ? The Portland Pirates find themselves a little thin on the blueline this morning as defenseman Mike Weber was recalled by the Buffalo Sabres late yesterday.

Just a general question. Will the Portland fans start to get pissed off when the Sabres start calling up players or will they understand?

They're a minor league team. That's what happens. You enjoy your best players while they are there, but know that they can be called up at any point.

Not in Rochester. Remember they want to win a Calder Cup first, , and develop players for the NHL second. /Amerks6

No, I don't think they will be angry. Maybe not happy if it's a large number of call ups, but not angry.

That being said, I think the tables need to be turned and some Sabres fans (and those in the media) need to understand that Buffalo isn't going to make a rash set of call ups because they're playing poorly or otherwise.

Players will be recalled based on injuries and injuries alone as is the case with Mancari and Weber. Buffalo has a roster of 23 players and they just don't have the room, and unless Regier wants to start giving players away for nothing then Buffalo has the players they have and when the Sabres are healthy they will send Mancari and Weber back to Portland.

The exception might be Mancari who is approaching the number of games for needing waivers...that opens another can of worms.

Those who think Gerbe, Kennedy and Butler should be recalled to play full-time duty in the NHL are A.) crazy and/or B.) haven't seen them play and grasp why they are in the AHL. I tend to think it's the latter of the two.

It's not always about stats, in fact, I've always been a person who takes very little from numbers because anybody, anywhere can take stats and make them saying anything they want. It still doesn't mean they will be good NHL players.

Again....I need to say it's not that I don't think any of those three will make the NHL, but they need to work on things at the AHL level first before making the next step to being NHL ready.

Here's just a sample for each player.

Kennedy - Great play along the boards, but he tends to play too far back from the boards and he's going to get hurt....He's already been drilled twice from behind.

Gerbe - He tends to forget the defensive responsibilities on the ice....He a great back-checker, but he shouldn't be out of position as much as he is.

Butler - He's probably the closest the of three, but he needs to be more physical on the puck and learn to get into the shooting lanes a little faster... The NHL game is much faster then the AHL.

Those are only a few reasons why they haven't been brought up instantly. It takes time and patience and I know it's hard when you're a passionate fan, but (this is not to sound crass) you have to understand this is what you have for this season unless Regier starts giving away players, which no GM in their right mind will do.

You have a very bright future in Buffalo, but don't rush it because you might be very disappointed when they finally do arrive.

Things like this need to be said far more often on this board.

Well this year they are trying like hell (and succeeding) at accomplishing neither of these things.

Way to go fat boy!!!!!

He'll never play in Buffalo if he doesn't fix that!

I understand that. It is just that Rochester seemed to have a problem because they wanted a winning team instead of prospects. I was wondering the mindset of the Portland fans.

What gives you this idea? Every team in the AHL wants to win the Calder Cup just for the fact that it generates much more money. And every fan wants to watch a winning team as well. Who wants to watch a crappy, losing team with zero prospects to focus on? Any smart hockey fan knows that these younger players aren't going to be around more than 2 or 3 years to develop their skills. Watching them mature on the ice is a great thing to witness. I watched Vanek and Miller hone their skills in Rochester knowing they weren't going to be here long. With the right prospects, you can also have a winning team, just look at Portland. Right now the Amerks have absolutely nothing worth paying to see.

Rochester didn't have a problem with it, douche bag Donner and his greedy ass had the problem. He doesn't give two turds about the fans of Rochester and they are showing him that at the gate.

That's what I meant to say. It didn't come across right.

No problem.

I used to love going to Amerks games win or lose. Donner totally ruined that for me. That fat #%^$#!ing POS!!!!

I hope Weber was able to get some sun today. <_< Maybe go out for a few drinks with the boys tonight and grab a "sausage" before heading back to Portland.

Won't that make "The General" a little jealous?

If anything, the trip to Miami screwed him up as he probably left wondering why he wasn't playing after watching the performance of his fellow blueliners live and in person. <_<

He knew it was an emergency callup. There's no way that wasn't made completely clear to him. I'm a little confused as to how he would complain about the play of his fellow blueliners unless he planned on putting a few pucks in the net last night.

One of the rare times a player is happy to go back to the minors.

Yeah, especially with that zero that just disappeared off of the end of his paycheck.

Maybe just maybe a big hit by Weber might have inspired his teammates play, but things are going so well, I can see why Lindy wants to go with the status quo. <_<
