The Pirates get back into the win column

Portland, ME ? On most Sunday afternoon?s, it usually time to pop the popcorn, open the chips and dip and settle in for a little football action, but not in the case of the Portland Pirates.

For the 2,997 in attendance who braved to come out to the Cumberland County Civic Center, instead of staying home to watch the Patriots lose to the Steelers, they were rewarded with a, 4-0, blue-collar victory from the Pirates over the Monarchs.

I was starting to get a bit worried about Gerbe. Glad he scored. Hopefully he can get over whatever it was that was bothering him and start scoring again for Portland. Oh, and nice to see Enroth playing so well too. Second career NA shutout!

Two months into his professional career and your worried about the guy. Makes perfect sense.

That's just the Buffalo sports fan coming out of him.

Like all of those "Vanek is a bust" comments that were all over this board last year (none from Vanek-Man as far as I remember)?

Not a chance, i never worried about Thomas Vanek.

Why is it bad i got worried about Gerbe? Dude has mostly scored on PPs in the AHL and then went 9 games without a goal. I think it was a legit reason.

Really, those sound like concerns that should've existed long before he ever played an NHL game. Scoring almost nothing but powerplay goals is a big product of his size. So really, that's nothing new in the will he or won't he make it debate.

But really, when it comes to you, you're probably one of the most optimistic people on this board. Based on many of your past comments on prospects, I'm very surprised that you would actually talk about being worried about a guy after 1+ month of professional hockey.

Obviously. I don't expect him to score each night, but when you're a top goal scorer and you don't score for 9 games, and you had a glaring default like his size, it is something to get worried about. I still think he'll be a very good NHLer, but i'd be lieing to you if i said that seeing Portland box scorers and missing his name from goals after 7...8...9.... games that it didn't cross my mind "oh crap, did the AHL figure Gerbe out?".

Not every top prospect will make it to the NHL. There will always be busts.

Not many people were high on Mancari and he's playing great this season in AHL and very well with Buffalo. But, how many people had doubts about Stafford? Even last season and how many arguments did it start? People calling people names because they called Drew's game lazy, unmotivated and over rated. And look, Stafford looks like a complete bum.
