Sabres heavily trying to move Max

Two or less

I'd be happy with a draft pick or young prospect for Max. We seem to have pretty decent luck in turning picks into NHL players or finding some young kid to stick in Portland for a couple of years to mature. Keep stocking the system.

Sabres need to try harder. Take a bundle of sticks, maybe some new tires for the Zamboni, anything to get him off the roster and free up the cap space and roster spot for a player who deserves it.

If someone offers a conditional late-round pick, take it and end this debacle.

Max made it clear when he was benched that he'd like to move on. I think someone (Darcy) reminded him that he's got to sell himself. So far, so good. Let's hope someone bites......

DENVER POST: Adrian Dater believes there's "an outside chance" the Colorado Avalanche could try to acquire struggling Buffalo Sabres winger Maxim Afinogenov, claiming the Avs have made some inquiries. Dater suggests defenseman Brett Clark, who's been considered trade bait, might not be available due to a recent injury to Adam Foote.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: As Dater notes a change of scenery might do Afinogenov some good. The Sabres tried moving him without success last summer but might find more interest in him as this season progresses.

Max To Lanche?

Eck Rumor : Read at own Risk:

According to multiple sources the Oilers are looking hard at Max Afinogenov and Zherdev in NY. The Rangers likely would only move Zherdev if they win the Sundin sweeps, so this could be looked at as a sign that Sundin and the NY Rangers may be re-kindling discussions. Eck Rumor

Maybe the Sabres could hold a raffle to see which fan can drive Max to the airport.

I hear the Sabres might be moving Connolly. Apparently the Sabres just received a large order of bubble wrap.

Max probably has his best game of the season against Pittsburgh,

and then undoes it all by taking the wrong guy on the backcheck against Montreal when they

scored the go ahead.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGHH!!

Waive him......I don't care.

Don't forget that whole play started because he decided to walk in and pretty much PUT THE DAMN PUCK DIRECTLY ON KOVALEVS STICK, and on a PP where we had the PK running around in their own end for 30+ seconds.

Kovalev just stood there and extended his stick, Max walked RIGHT INTO HIM!

I HATE Max at this point, waive him, trade him, who the heck cares, just never ever play him again.

Sabres not mad about Max, a Stars fix and more reader mail

There's been lots of talk locally about [the Sabres] moving Maxim Afinogenov. I would hate to see him go because I think he's just scratched the surface of his talent and could break out any time. I'd hate to see it happen with another team! What sort of return could they get for him? Would the Rangers be interested?

-- Leslie Marcum, Rochester, NY

C'mon, Leslie. At 29, Afinogenov has done all the scratching he's going to do. The Sabres seem to realize that what they see is what they get -- a player with great wheels and remarkable puck skill, but without the jam to translate them consistently onto the scoreboard. He'll tease you with a burst of creativity then rip out your heart with a series of brain-dead turnovers. European leagues are filled with guys like that, proof that it takes more than talent to be a solid pro.

Problem is, every other team has figured out that there's more sizzle than steak to Afinogenov's game. They see a guy who has a career high of 23 goals and has put up at least 50 points just twice in his eight seasons. And $3.5 million may not buy much these days, but it should get you more than four goals, which is the furious pace Max has set for this season.

Remember: this is his contract year. If this is the best he can come up with when his financial future is on the line, what's Afinogenov going to produce when he's comfortable? All that said, you have to think there's some team out there that will regard Max like some brooding, misunderstood boy from the wrong side of the tracks who just needs someone to believe in him. It won't be the Rangers -- they aren't going to clear cap space for a distraction like this -- but it's possible that some offensively-challenged squad like the Panthers, Islanders or Hurricanes might dream of seeing what he could do with a fresh coat of paint.

If the Sabres do find a sucker, they might be looking at a mid-round draft pick in return. Whatever curb appeal Afinogenov still possesses is pretty much obliterated by that cap hit

If Darcy and Lindy were on the same page, Darcy would trade him ASAP to the team with the best(I use the term loosely) offer. If there are no offers, buy him out and send him packing.

It is clear he is on the team and playing most nights because of Darcy. not Lindy.
