Sabres have mental block against Sens...

No matter how poorly Ottawa plays against everyone else, they seem to be really good at blowing us out, whether its at home or away, it matters not...

What is the problem with this team against the Sens?? Do we just matchup a lot worse than some other teams in the league, are we scared of them, or do we just have something mentally that prevents us from playing well?

This has been an ongoing problem, even when Drury and Briere were here...the Sens just seem to have our number...

What does everyone think the Sabres issues are when playing the Sens??

I wonder what went into Lindy's decision to start Lalime. Lalime in Colorado and Miller tonight would have made more sense. Did Lindy give his team license to lay an egg?

I thought Ryan did start the game but was pulled. Am I wrong? What game did I watch?

Wow. Is see that maybe I was wrong. I was helping kids with homework in the first period and I swear I heard them say Miller in goal and I even thought I saw him!

I'm as messed up as they are tonight. :(

I completely agree.....it seems that Lindy has a bit too much confidence in Lalime. A fired up home crowd versus the arch rival Sens is a game that Miller has got to start.

I watched parts of the game on two different feeds, so I don't remember which one it happened on, but somebody definitely called Lalime, "Miller". I did one of these

Let's not completely throw Lalime under the bus here.

No, he didn't play well, but neither did anyone else against a team that has our number like nobody else in this league.

Everytime I watch us play the Sens, we're getting outhustled to every puck and their top line has a field day against us. It's sickening.

Lalime looked fine. He was facing odd man rushes and point blank shots all game. No goalie will survive that.

You are right, it was not entirely Lalime's fault.......I just think miller gives us the best chance to win, and the Sens are a team we need to work on beating.

No arguments there, it definitely seems like we're always lacking in the effort department when it comes to the Sens.

But give credit where credit is due - I think Ottawa knows EXACTLY how to play in order beat us senseless, and in this case it's Lindy's job to start wondering what's wrong, cause these Ottawa games certainly seem like a bad habit.

Who cares though, we lost a game and as long we don't turn that loss into a streak, no harm done.

Moving on

Yeah I'm more pissed that we were backing up all night, not taking the body and challenging the Sens up at center ice like the team that played the Avalanche on Saturday played. IMO if we had played like we did Saturday I would at least felt better whether they lost or not.

Exactly. He was, for the most part, hung out to dry. Buffalo's defense barely existed.

We just don't have an answer for their top guns, and our top guns are usually AWOL when we play them.

Ding ding ding. Maybe in their minds the Sabres' top offensive players think they can hang with the Sens' top offensive players, thus these "trading chances" games. But they're no match. The Sabres score tons of goals, but they usually have to work hard and or work some creative magic to do it. Ottawa has guys who just bury the puck. Who do you want on a breakaway, Spezza or Vanek? I always get the feeling the Sabres don't want to get themselves dirty against the Senators. I also always get the feeling Chris Neil is a difference-maker.

This is one situation where injuries play a big role. MacArthur has done a decent job filling in, but I would rather put Paille-Hecht-Pominville out there to defend against their big three, not to mention having Rivet on the ice, focusing on D. They'd have a better chance of shutting them down.

Yep. Buffalo's skill guys can't hang with Ottawa's.

Heatley>Vanek

Spezza>Roy

Alfredsson>Pominville

Playoff time it's a different story but regular season those guys kill the Sabres.

The flip side is that Ottawa has had Miller's number more often than not.

You hit the nail right on the head. In the old days we had the Peca line to roll out and shut down a line like this, or Sundin's line in toronto. Give credit where its due.. That top line is pretty sick.

I was curious through this whole scenario if Lalime had any insite towards the OTT snipers from his time spent there.....obviously not much.

Not that it really matters, but Lalime was there during the Jacques Martin era of worthlessness in the playoffs. I'm pretty sure that when Lalime was there, the only guy from the big 3 that was there was Alfredsson. Back then, the Sens had Yashin (traded for the draft pick that became Spezza along with Chara) and Hossa (traded for Heatley).

Either way, the Sens really have the Sabres number and I kind of feared what happened last night would happen. Injuries are not an excuse for the way the Sabres played because I think they still could have played a better game and played better team defense, but it's tough when your top defensive players aren't playing such as Hecht, Gaustad, and Rivet. Not saying it's an excuse for last night, though, but hopefully the Sabres will be getting healthy soon enough and can start playing a little better.

Overall, I've noticed a bad trend over the last 3 games that culminated in last night's game. The Sabres have not been starting strong and have pulled off some comeback wins and while they played well defensively, they were getting outworked and outhustled at the beginning of games, and that's something you just can't do against Ottawa and their big 3. Let's hope they get back on track against the Lightning Thursday and put last night behind them as they have 5 more games against the Sens this year.

I do have to wonder: when (if) we have everyone back, will they be able to do better? Our most defensive line would be the Paille-Hecht-Pominville line, though Hecht would get killed on the faceoffs. Could those three, plus Rivet-Tallinder, playing a more shutdown type "team defense", do any better?

03-04 senators roster

sorry, no tit for tat here, but i had to check it out. Still alot of familiar faces. I dont think the philosophy of the Senators franchise has changed that much.

On the trends part, i think the fast start and comeback luck couldve went to their heads. Tampa is not looking great vs. the Leafs tonight but winning. I've said all along of the lack of input from the Ellis, Peters, Kaleta area and the dependancy on Roy in particular to make things happen.

Tampa won 3-2. Hopefully, that will be enough to make them a little less desperate, but just beating the Leafs shouldn't give them too much to get excited about either.
