Two or less Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Sorry guys if this was talked about. I watched the Sabres game last night but didn't really read the board and went to the Bills game today. I slept after the Bills game and just woke up and reading up on my hockey that i've missed and seen this article. I wonder if there's any truth to it? Max headed west? Usually it takes about 20 games for teams to evaluate their rosters before working the phones, but it didn?t stop the beloved NHL rumor mill from warming up. Among the recent subjects is none other than Maxim Afinogenov, the talented but enigmatic Sabres winger. There are whispers he could wind up in Colorado. Avalanche President Pierre Lacroix has been a longtime Afinogenov admirer. Talented winger Marek Svatos, a healthy scratch already this season, appears to have one skate in the doghouse. He?s also coming off surgery to repair a torn ACL, but he has two years and only $4.1 million remaining on his contract. Afinogenov, who is making $3.5 million in the final year of his deal, could thrive in the West until teams learn how to defend him. Svatos would give the Sabres another scoring threat on the right side. He had 32 goals and 50 points as a rookie, 15 goals and 30 points in 2006-07 and 26 goals and 37 points last season. The Avs also could try wheeling Svatos for a proven goaltender. Nikolai Khabibulin is available but comes with a $6.75 million salary. Colorado would need to make another move to create room under the cap. Link- http://www.buffalonews.com/489/story/467742.html Honestly, Svatos would be a great fit for Buffalo i think. But the playeri 'd want most from them is Wojtek Wolski. The Polish kid. He's got great hands, is a big kid and goes infront of the net. He fights for the puck by the boards. Although his work ethic is weak at times. Although Svatos could be a 30-goal scorer in Lindy Ruff's system.
frisky Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 I think Max needs a change of scenary. Like Pyatt did. Might do him a world of good. Svatos sounds like a good player in return. I think we'll make out ahead if we can pull that off. Of course, I wouldn't mind seeing a good young d-man to help stock the shelf a little more. After Weber, we're a little green in that department.
carpandean Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 As I said in another forum, the guy pulls his groin more than a teenage boy! (See http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/players/Marek_Svatos/) ------------------------------ I think Darcy should agree to the deal and then, when writing up the contract, "accidentally" write Stastny instead.
inkman Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 But the playeri 'd want most from them is Wojtek Wolski. The Polish kid. . Imagine that... B-) I think Max needs a change of scenary. Like Pyatt did. I agree that Max might need a change of scenery but for completely different reasons that Pyatt. Taylor was just a pup when he was dealt. He was a player struggling to find an identity. Afginogenov's identity has been cemented. The reason he needs a change of scenery is that were tired of watching him.

Max has been playing decent hockey this season Sabres goals have been scored this year due to his start of play or a rush he is known for into the other team's zone. He has also been getting back to the Sabres side of the rink, unlike last year. I would like Wolski to be a Sabre, though. I think he'd fit in better w/ Buffalo. So, yes, I'd be happy if a Wolski/Max trade was completed. Even though Wolski's name hasn't been mentioned. I'm not big on Svatos. Stastny would be a steal, but Colorado would be stupid to give him up.
carpandean Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Stastny would be a steal, but Colorado would be stupid to give him up. We can only hope that Fran?ois Gigu?re has taken up smoking crack in the off season ...
SabresFan526 Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 I also read the rumor in Bucky's column. I'm not buying it though. And, I don't think Darcy is stupid enough to take on Svatos. What do I mean by that? Svatos is very gifted, but we already have Tim Connolly someone who gets paid more for his work with the training staff than his work on the ice. Svatos is also quite injury prone and I wouldn't want him. Let's end the talk of Wolski and Stastny coming here because neither of those are going to happen as Giguere would never make a trade like that. What I could see happening is that the Avs may want a defenseman as they lost Sauer and Finger in the offseason. Any trade with the Avs would probably involve one of our defensemen going that way as they don't have a ton of depth on the blueline. While Max may fetch a Svatos, I'm not sure I want another oft injured player in the Sabres lineup. Realistically, if Max were to be traded, which I'm not 100% convinced will happen anymore, the most likely destinations I think are Washington, Vancouver, and Phoenix. In terms of Washington, I would be intrigued by a Max and Tallinder trade for Nylander. I think that's even realistic given how well the Caps played without Nylander last year potentially making him expendable this year, but he does have a no-trade clause making that trade difficult. And, the Caps could use some depth on the blueline after Green and Poti. Either way, I'm not as convinced as I was that Max will get traded this year. I think he will most likely leave in free agency.

SHAAAUGHT!!! Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Max may be playing in Russia next year unless he starts impressing some people around the league.
LabattBlue Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 I'd rather see a pick or a good prospect in return for Max instead of an injury prone euro forward who is currently in the doghouse.
frisky Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 At this point, I think if we can get anything in return for Max we'll have made out in the end since right now it looks like he'll walk. Hopefully, Darcy can fleece someone but sounds like he gave it a shot during the off-season. I think the only hope of unloading him this year will be to someone that's deperate at the trade deadline. Hopefully, we won't be that team.

RayFinkle Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Nothing against trade rumors, because I love reading them. But has ANY rumor ever come true?
carpandean Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Let's end the talk of Wolski and Stastny coming here because neither of those are going to happen as Giguere would never make a trade like that. Read my original post; I was completely joking about Stastny. His name is close enough to Svatos that they might not notice if Darcy wrote his name in the trade agreement instead. Clearly, they are not going to trade Stastny for Max. They probably wouldn't even trade him for Roy.

Show me effort when you're 22 as a reason to stay up. At his age, he must produce. Max simply isn't. He's considered one of the top forwards for the Sabres and in the past has shown it, but last season and now this season, he's just layed an egg. It shouldn't be acceptable. He needs to go somewhere else and the Sabres must find a sniper IMO if we want to be serious contenders and make a playoff push and i think Svatos could be that guy. Two seasons ago he scored 26 goals but only 3 were on PP. The rest were even stregeth. Those are crazy numbers.
Two or less Posted October 21, 2008 Author Report Posted October 21, 2008 And just a thought, i'm watching the Colorado game right now on CI, if Svatos isn't available for Max, the one other player i'd want from Colorado is Tyler Arnason. The guy is a playmaking center, i think he could do really well in our system. Very good skater, good in his own end, he fights for the puck and we need a center. Also, he can play wing. Worse comes to worse, Arnason for Max deal would make me very happy.
inkman Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 He's considered one of the top forwards for the Sabres and in the past Lots of players were lots of things in the past. Max may have benefitted from the now defunct "new NHL" more than any other player in the league. Now he's back to being Max. He didn't change, the game did. It shouldn't be acceptable. Those are definitely nice numbers but your use of the word crazy seems a little out of place. I'm just a a huge believer in that confidence plays a major role in a athletes season and Max's confidence is probably rock bottom, which doesn't help any of his other problems, only makes it worse. I'm really interested to see the following 3-4 games after Max does score a goal. I'm not a big Max fan, i was until end of the President's Trophy winning season where i really realized alot of his flaws. However, i don't think he's THIS bad. About the Aves, not too many of their players, who are realistic oppertunities to get, i'd want. Arnason is probably the biggest one, with Svatos. Max could fetch a few other guys but they would be useless in Buffalo. They do have a few d-men that Sabres could use if our luck with Tallinder or Lydman does run out or have a long term injury, but i believe Colorado is also in the market for the defensemen so I'm not sure if they would want to deal one away. lol

Svatos is exactly what Buffalo is looking for. They are looking for the right right wing for Roy and Vanek and sonce they now prefer to keep their payroll in the lower third, they are not in the game for someone like Gaborik and Svatos is a "cheap" alternative. Unless, of course, TG again tries to impress Monica Seles.
