matter2003 Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Anybody else in WNY w/ DirecTV not getting the Shootout? 1st chance I had this season to catch the postgame show, and the tech at DirecTV is claiming they aren't even getting it in their office. Bummer. they show it on DISH...
inkman Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 ...but Kotalik has been putting together a nice season in the final year of his contract. Can you say $$$$$$? 2. Kotalik has played very well with 4 goals thus far and is second on the team in scoring behind Vanek. Can you say $$$$$$$$$$? Kotalik has been a good deal. Can you say $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$? I could totally see the Rangers/Flyers throwing crazy money at Kotalik this up coming offseason. He's going to put up career numbers and somebody will give him the huge jack he is playing for. That being said, I's love if they could extend him for < 3 mill per but I just can't see him agreeing to that. He know at least one sucker GM is out there.
Guest Sloth Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 I, again, was impressed w/ the Sabres style of play tonight. Their defense has been stound and their special teams has been very good. Vanek is just all over the ice. I am beyond impressed w/ the guy. He's been on fire since the all-star break. Anyone disagree? For Ruff to say he believes he can make Vanek the best 2 way player in hockey means something. That is not something Ruff would just say. He would truly have to believe it. Also, Robatialle has been far more than impressed w/ the Sabres. Last year it seemed as if he was doing a fake smile or fake remark. This year he seems true to his word. Anyone disagree?
carpandean Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Vanek on pace for 123 goals and 164 points. Kotalik on pace for 82 goals and 123 points. Monsters on this team, I tell ya, monsters!!
Guest Sloth Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Time to watch some Slapshot and drink some beer to finish of a great night of Sabres hockey. Have a good one fella's!!!
inkman Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Vanek is just all over the ice. I am beyond impressed w/ the guy. I'm eating a whole bunch of this.
Guest Sloth Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 I'm eating a whole bunch of this. Me too!!!
will Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 i wondered how long before you said something in that regard, inkster. what a beautiful bird.
SwampD Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Me too!!! Sure does taste tasty though doesn't it
Claude Balls Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Sure does taste tasty though doesn't it They taste like chicken.
Two or less Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 I don't think Kotalik is a contract year type player who does well to get the money and floats. He's always been a very consistent player and always has had one of the best shots. He's getting a few bounces and some lucky breaks this season. For example, the 2 goals he scored today, don't come around very often. The first one Sanford should have stopped, and the second one, he was just in the right spot, it didn't do much with effort but just a high hockey IQ to skate down the ice and hope for Vanek to get the puck and send it to the middle. Kotalik has never been a floater.
Two or less Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 A few things on top of my head- I thought Sekera was our best d-men tonight. I thought he was awesome skating with the puck, and he did a GREAT job on the PP. He was keeping the puck in, on a few plays where last year Spacek or Kalinin just let it get past them, it was nice to see Sekera make the stop and allow our PP to keep on going. I also thought defensively he was great all night once again. I also thought MacArthur and even (yes, no joke) Peters did good tonight. MacArthur has been an animal ever since opening night. In pre-season, he was ok, besides the shootout game vs. Minnesota at home where he played great. He wasn't expected to play vs. Montreal and has played each game since due to injuries, but i don't see any way of benching this kid. MacArthur is a legit 2nd line player in the NHL. Goes to the net. Hits hard. Fights around the boards. Makes really nice passes and has 2 goals in 4 games to show for it, and both goals he's scored this season i felt were great. Tonight was more of a "garbage" goal since it was a rebound from a shot by Rivet, but i feel his hard work in front of the net had much to do with his good positioning. As for Peters, good fight, good hitting, he got Kaleta's back and looked like he knew what he was doing (in moments where he wasn't hitting/fighting) which was nice for a change. The obvious, PP and PK i thought were great. And we did a great job in faceoffs. It wasn't a perfect game for Buffalo (besides the start) but it's a long season and it's a nice win to have when you don't play that well. Off to Atlanta. Kovalchuk has been quiet all season, hopefully Sabres can keep him that way. And Bryan Little has been great for them, hopefully we can stop his little quick start tomorrow night. If the Sabres stop those two, Atlanta doesn't have too much after that, so it could be a easy game if the defense does it's job on those 2 and if we stay out of the penalty box.
carpandean Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Every time that I listen to a Vanek post-game interview, I can't help but think that after he goes through puberty, he will be a real beast.
JujuFish Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Sabres opponents are a combined 14-2 outside of their Buffalo games. Pretty impressive that we're standing at 4-0 right now. Edit: Not only are we 4-0, we currently have the stingiest defense and the fourth best offense in the league, as well as the best PK.
... Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 I've always kind of liked Kotalik and if he doesn't tank this season (which I don't expect him to), I hope he's extended before the end of the season. He's always a good choice for a shoot-out slot and has a mean shot. I think Max and Timmy can go, but we keep Kotalik. Vanek is a beast. Mair, even, has become beastly this season. Roy - what's up with Roy? Too many give-aways from him I thought. I like MacArthur. He fits in really well. Same with Sekera. I love it that he's Spacek's bitch this season. He's doing quite well with it, me thinks. Peters. has. been. MUCH. improved. I mean, I had no problems with him tonight - especially after that fight. I almost think he won that one. I mean, we're not talking Vanek territory, but let's say I didn't wince, or shout at the TV when Peters was on the ice tonight. Can't say that for, well, ANY game in the past. How far can the boys take the winning streak?

Edit: Not only are we 4-0, we currently have the stingiest defense and the fourth best offense in the league, as well as the best PK. Along the lines of your edit, those opponents have averaged 3.625 goals for per game in non-Sabres games, while we held them to 1.25 goals for per game.
... Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 From: http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/sports/...c1-0b663280005c On Kaleta: "We had written on the board. . . that all [Kaleta] does is talk and doesn't fight. It was written on the board. You're supposed to read the board and not put your team in trouble. Obviously, [O'Brien] did." O'Brien said: "I should know better; I shouldn't have put my team down shorthanded. But he runs our skill players shift after shift and no penalty. If that's hockey, I don't know what's going on with the game. He takes liberties on our skill players, I come in, I get four minutes. I could see maybe giving me two minutes. Like I said, I shouldn't have did what I did." HAHA! God, I love Kaleta.

He know at least one sucker GM is out there. correct. someone will give Al over $3 million per year, and the Sabres won't go that high. Out of Max, Connolly and Kotalik, Al is the one having the contract year. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if he got 30. Hello DeLuca. Their defense has been stound You don't say? All kidding aside, "Van-city" kind of mailed it in tonight, but it was still a good win -- the kind of convincing, no-BS win that strong playoff teams get. Vanek is really in the zone right now, eh? Anyone up for 5 and 0 tomorrow night?
ThePebble19 Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 I.Love.This.Team. Can't say it any other way. Most impressive I have seen this team in a while. Anyone else as impressed with Peters as I am? He actually looked good in a fight last night, but overall he has been playing very well. Great backcheck, taking shots, making passes, crackin' skulls...glad to see he is actually contributing more than a fight every game.
LabattBlue Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 It's early in the year, but since I nominated Kotalik to be my whipping boy this year, I'll have a "small" portion(we're only 4 games in) of crow for breakfast... Other game thoughts... -I love watching the games out with other people, but I always feel like I am missing too many of the little things. -Vanek blowing by O'Brien was a thing of beauty. -It's only a matter of time before Pomniville & Roy get hot, but in the meantime, it's nice to see guys like Kotalik & MacArthur step their games up. -I watched Peters fight last night and I can only conclude that he has been watching the videos in my "learn how to fight" thread. -1st non-sellout of the season...on a Friday night no less. GO SABRES!!!!!

GO SABRES!!!!! Guess the non-sellout kills 12 people's chances of winning this prediction. I wouldn't start salting the crow just yet. As TW mentioned in another thread, we've seen Big Al get hot and go on streaks. This might be another hot streak for him. Let's see if he stays consistent.

inkman Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Let's see if he stays consistent. Or at least stays hot until Roy and/or Pommers gets hot.
inkman Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Kotalik has never been a floater. Some may argue that point but more importantly a player who lists 50 cent as his favorite musical artist is certainly going to be looking forward to spendin cheez on some bling.

He has his ups and downs--a few years ago, he had a power-play point shot that just couldn't miss for two months and then he couldn't find the net for two more months--but I don't think his efforts change. He's just streaky is all.
