matter2003 Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I hope not. This team has a weird, different feeling than most Sabres teams I remember. Yeah...they seem to be everything the Sabres haven't been over the past few years....tougher, blocking shots like their lives are on the line, taking no crap from other teams, playing extremely sound defensively(holding each of their first 3 opponents to 1 goal, including what most people felt were the 2 best teams in the EC this year), and playing aggressively shorthanded(Vanek has been a revelation on the PK)... Could this team be much better than anyone thought??
BetweenThePipes00 Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Great win ... sorry if this was posted, but I kind of enjoyed Vanek beating Drury to the front of the net for the SHG ... Lindy said his goal is to turn Vanek into the best 2-way player in the league ... I have no idea if he can do THAT but I love the results so far. Congrats to Lindy on 400 wins, that was his kind of win tonight ... no pond hockey, they stayed poised when they fell behind ... Nice start to the season, boys.
Claude Balls Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 The worst part is I posted that about 5 secs before he got it up the wing. :wallbash: Even so, he played rock solid all night and I think i have a new candidate for my third jersey. I'm still working on getting my Kaleta jersey. :worthy:
JohnRobertEichel Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I hope not. This team has a weird, different feeling than most Sabres teams I remember. I bet that different feeling is coming from our new captain.
ROC Sabres Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Yeah...they seem to be everything the Sabres haven't been over the past few years....tougher, blocking shots like their lives are on the line, taking no crap from other teams, playing extremely sound defensively(holding each of their first 3 opponents to 1 goal, including what most people felt were the 2 best teams in the EC this year), and playing aggressively shorthanded(Vanek has been a revelation on the PK)... Could this team be much better than anyone thought?? Considering NHL ranked them at 20th i believe in the league, yes. Rivet is the final piece of the puzzle that we were missing. Having him be captain was the best move by the players. Someone new that doesnt take sh!t from opponents and teammates alike. He will get in your face and tell you to do better. You gotta hate and love a teammate like that! It makes you want/need to be better.
X. Benedict Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 3 Games3 GA 11 GF (12 if you include SO) 100% PK Great PP (2 tonight) Miller 2GA Vanek 5 Goals (2 SH) 4 fights Tight D Kaleta is league's premier agitator But I'm sure the negative types will continue their crap  I'm not ready to give him that title yet.....tonight Mara was trying to get payback for his broken jaw. Keep your head up Paulie!!
Claude Balls Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Could this team be much better than anyone thought?? I don't think people realize just how much of a difference not going far into or even making the playoffs helps a team for the following year. Buffalo went deep 2 years ago and slacked off last year, now they gots they mojo back.
R_Dudley Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 So you could see a game between 2 teams go either way? I meant the low 2-1 score but yeah I see how w/o stating that explicitly it sounds.. Who cares now though after they played a great road game... Rags undeafeated no more...But my favorite team is..
Realist Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 This team played a great road game today. It seemed like a pretty boring game, but they played a near perfect defensive game tonight.
darksabre Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I bet that different feeling is coming from our new captain. I would have to agree. I also think Lindy has changed his philosophy for this year too. I'm sure he's coaching the team to play more physical. Maybe he sat down and had a long chat with Mr. Dineen?
will Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 you guys are making a convincing argument for me bucking up for Center Ice even when i know i can't afford it. i called ahead to the local sports bar to see if they'd have msg/nhl hockey available..."oh yeah, sure, if it's on direcTV, we'll have it." i sat there through the entire first period while they "kept checking" for it. like they couldn't just hand me the remote...f^cking ridiculous. i finally left in favor of following along with your updates. i don't know what i'm going to do after tonight, though.
SabreInFla Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Only three games, but it looks like Lindy and the crew came into the season will a plan that so far is being well executed. Very inspiring start, let's keep it up!
Eleven Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Again the random thoughts... 1. Sekera. Look, I like the kid back there, but please, never on a power play again until he's got half a season under his belt. It's not just "not working," it's horrible. 2. Vanek is a freaking monster. I said it Friday, I'll say it again. The man is everywhere. 3. Next time I see a thread about Max giving up the puck, I'm starting a thread about Roy giving up the puck. Because it happens a hell of a lot more often with Roy, but no one picks on him. (And I like 'em both.) 4. Again, Roy. NICE decision to take the hard shot on Lundquist, and making the rebound happen. That goal was because of smart decision-making by No. 9. 5. Miller, nice game, some nice saves, nothing completely out of this world, though. And Ryan, if you want a shutout in this league, it means stopping the soft ones. Like the only one you let in. Nice game; let's get the head in the game a little earlier, though, eh? Puck dropped at 705. 6. Please, let Peters go. Let him spread his wings and fly. AWAY FROM HERE. Horrible fighter; worse hockey player. And this, after a game where in the 2d he actually made a nice effort to get the puck up ice. Get this bozo out of here. 7. Barnaby, thy name is Kaleta now. 8. Drury and Mara, thanks. We appreciated everything that each of you did for us tonight. 9. Lindy. You did something in between the first and second periods, because I saw forty minutes of hockey just after I watched twenty minutes of crap. Whatever that in-between-period speech is, consider reading it an hour and a half earlier. .

A friend of mine has direct tv, so I usually catch the games over there. But when I'm stuck at the house, I listen to the game on WGR. You can listen to it on the internet. That's actually what I did tonight. RJ makes it as close as possible. RJ's the man.
R_Dudley Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Boy the Sabres defense looks good. Very solid. Yeah who woulda thunk 3 games in they would look this good. I really like Lindy's combinations and how all three pairings are playing right now...

And whoever thought of putting Vanek on the penalty kill  I'm trying not to get too excited early in the season but what a great start.

Kaleta's role on this team is great. He lays clean hits and ticks off the other players, which ends up getting the Sabres a pp. Peters almost screwed up the major pp tonight, according to RJ. (I was listening to the game on the internet) Peters started to make his way to "protect" Kaleta? There is no reason for Peters to be on this team. Send him a pink slip.

I'm sure he's coaching the team to play more physical. Maybe he sat down and had a long chat with Mr. Dineen? I defintely agree with that. This team does feel different, looks different, has a plan and is executing it well. Congrats to Lindy on 400 wins with one team no less. Also as Between the pipes stated I noticed that on Vaneks SH goal he skated back hard into the play and right by CD to make that tap in. Excellent play and looks like he believes his coach will make him into the best 2-way player we have had on this team. Side note becuase I now have center ice I am too busy watching games to also be typing but boy it is the best $160 bucks I have spent on myself in a long time... Boy the way bruins just tied it up with Montreal and their going to OT... 3 games into the season and my wife is already complaining I am watching too much hockey... Go figure

He was on the PK on Monday, too, and was awesome then. We are watching something special with this kid. Hope he keeps it up.
nucci Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Seems like more of a Lindy Ruff team again. The high-scoring teams were not his style but it worked for a short time so he stayed with it. This is more like it.

Drury looked pretty human tonight, didn't he?

Whatever that in-between-period speech is, consider reading it an hour and a half earlier. . Eleven, I hope you have to be this picky all season. If Miller is only allowing "soft" goals on screen shots that deflect in off guys cruising in front of the net like Gomez's, they can put his name on the Vezina now. He was plenty ready to play and kept his head in it despite not being very busy. As for Lindy, I hope he is not resorting to speeches after one so-so perioed 3 games in ... I hope he just said "Stick to the plan, keep working hard, it will come, boys." They allowed THREE shots in the first period, one of which, again, went in of someone's ass basically. i don't think he needed to start tossing trash cans. I know the majority of your post was positive, and it was not a perfect game ... but given they are down 3 centers, it was a pretty damn good road game, allowing 9 shots through 2 periods and winning double-minor shorthanded situation 1-0 in the third.
SwampD Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I'm not even looking forward to Complaint Thursday. I really think the feel of this team comes from the captain. I think everyone is benefiting from the void of last year being filled. Vanek can just play and the rest can just develop without the pressure of having to be the guy.
kingcongkorab Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Hard to call that one soft....tipped onto net right in the slot.8. Drury and Mara, thanks. Terrific road hockey.
