nobody Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 Vogl post Sabres' roster almost set The Sabres' opening night roster for the 2008-09 season might be set. The team sent several players, including Nathan Gerbe and Tim Kennedy, to Portland's camp this morning. The moves leave the team with 23 24 players -- one more than the NHL roster limit. Here's who's on the ice right now in HSBC Arena: Forwards: Thomas Vanek-Derek Roy-Maxim Afinogenov; Daniel Paille-Jochen Hecht-Jason Pominville; Clarke MacArthur-Matt Ellis-Ales Kotalik; Andrew Peters-Adam Mair-Patrick Kaleta. Tim Connolly, bothered by a bad back, is not on the ice. Defense: Toni Lydman-Craig Rivet; Jaroslav Spacek-Andrej Sekera; Mike Weber-Teppo Numminen; Henrik Tallinder-Nathan Paetsch. Goalies: Ryan Miller, Patrick Lalime. Have to wait for coach Lindy Ruff's news conference and a team release on the Portland guys to see if this is officially the lineup. Stay tuned. 1:45 P.M. UPDATE AFTER LINDY TALKED First off, sorry, in my haste to get from work room back to ice, forgot about Drew Stafford, who is out with an ear injury. So, yes, they have 24 players, not including Paul Gaustad who could be placed on injured reserve and not count. Ruff will not keep eight defensemen. He'd prefer to keep six, but the Sabres are all but certain to have seven. The coach said he's still not sure if they will keep 23 players for opening night. ---John Vogl
nobody Posted October 3, 2008 Author Report Posted October 3, 2008 SABRES ASSIGN EIGHT PLAYERS TO PORTLAND Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier announced today the Sabres have assigned eight players to the Portland Pirates of the American League. Heading to Portland are: forwards Mathieu Darche (pending waivers), Mark Mancari (pending waivers), Nathan Gerbe, Tim Kennedy, Dylan Hunter and Marek Zagrapan; and defensemen Chris Butler and Michael Funk.
carpandean Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 Mark Mancari (pending waivers) Oh no, but what if he doesn't clear!? ;)
mphs mike Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 Oh no, but what if he doesn't clear!? ;) He'll clear, go to Portland and follow the Pominville path to NHL riches!
TM8-PL16 Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 just my opinion... Weber, Kelata and MacArthur will all be going down eventually... two will go down before game 1 and the third will follow when Goose comes back. (pending no more injuries) No way they let Paetsch go, he would get picked up in a heart beat on waivers and I can't imagine they just got Ellis to lose him to waivers so quickly, but ya never know... maybe he's the guy who disappears when Goose comes back and Mac or Kelata stays up.
Two or less Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 He'll clear, go to Portland and follow the Pominville path to NHL riches! He ain't going anywhere but AHL.... No suprises on the list, besides maybe Mike Weber who is still with Buffalo. I figured he'd be going back with the rest of the crew to prepare for the Pirates season.

I don't think MacArthur will go down at all this year. He's a lock for the Sabres unless he's traded IMO.
nfreeman Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 So, including Gaustad, we have 25. So by the time he gets back, we have to send down at least 2 guys. Looking at the list, I think only Sekera and Weber can be sent down without clearing waivers. Assuming Weber goes down, we still need to either waive someone or send Sekera down and play Paetsch in the top 6. I don't see that happening. So, that leaves: 1. waive someone -- most likely either MacArthur or Ellis 2. Tom W.'s package trade scenario -- Spacek, Max and MacArthur for a good, tough center? This would solve our numbers problem, solve our center problem, put Weber into our top 6 and make everyone happy. 3. put Gaustad onto IR and send down Weber, and when Gaustad is ready to come back, someone else gets put onto IR or gets waived or traded. It's an interesting situation -- made more interesting by them picking up Ellis.
Two or less Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 1. Weber send down. 2. When Goose returns, Peters gets send down with the hopes of someone taking him off our books. That's my theory.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them carry 23 at this point. They have too many forwards and I don't know if they will expose MacArthur to waivers. Besides, I doubt that they really want to send Kaleta back down. Weber will likely end up starting in Portland, but has played well enough that they are keeping him around as a push for Tallinder and Lydman (I don't see Weber knocking Teppo, Rivet, Sekera or Spacek out of their spot and the #7 spot is a waste for him.) The only scenarios where I could see them starting him in Buffalo is if (a) they trade a defenseman (Hank, Toni or Nathan) and he takes a starting spot, or (b) if they get down to 13 forwards, they carry two defensemen in the press box to cover injuries and Weber takes away a starting spot. He won't start in the press box. Ellis is probably seen as a short-term fill-in for Goose at worst. In other words, if he shows something during that time, he might earn a fourth-line roster spot. Otherwise, he will be sent down to Portland and if he happens to be picked up off waivers, then no big deal.
nobody Posted October 3, 2008 Author Report Posted October 3, 2008 Oh no, but what if he doesn't clear!? ;) He'll clear, go to Portland and follow the Pominville path to NHL riches! So do I cancel my Mancari jersey order or save it for a few years?

I'd be amazed if the Sabres carried 3 extra players(including an injured Gaustad) for more than a game or so.

Two or less Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 ^^ LOL. :w00t: I'm sure someone could find room for him..... theres alot of goon teams in the West, but yeah, mostly a nice dream rather then a theory. lol

Barnabov Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 What's the book on Ellis? I'm surprised he was picked up unless there's more to him than his stats show. I see on his tsn page that he was day to day on the injured reserve with "Headache" and missed 3 games because of it. I hope/don't hope that was because of getting his bell rung & headaches was a mild form of concussion - otherwise it sounds like a Timmy-type ailment. His Wikipedia page makes him sound more appealing - former Captain of the Grand Rapids - has produced some shorties, can play LW or Center, etc. - I'm guessing he fills in for Mair / Gaustad during time they're out. Would be nice if he stuck & brought some quality for the whole season.

I'd say a Mair-type player that is capable of playing wing and center, plus taking PK ice time (about 3:00 per game in 15 of the 19 games that he played in LA.) This definitely helps in Goose's absence, but could be useful on the fourth line even after Paul gets back. Also, he did have some pretty impressive numbers in the OHL, ECHL and AHL, so he's not completely useless offensively. Finally, if you listen to his interview on SabresTV, he's got a really good attitude and, perhaps, will lead by example by never taking a shift off (other fan boards, like LA's, support this feeling.)

inkman Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 trade scenario -- Spacek I in no way shape or from could ever envision Jaro being traded this season. If he not their best D-man, he's the next best.
inkman Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 Bruised : day to day Not sure if my reading comp is working correctly, are you calling Matt Ellis a ?
carpandean Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 Ellis has a second interview on SabresTV. I definitely like this guy off the ice and look forward to seeing him on the ice. He won't be a star, but he could be a nice role player.
