inkman Posted October 1, 2008 Report Posted October 1, 2008 While I swore I was only going to watch the Amerks play this year if they were playing Portland, my wife's company gave her free tickies and I may have to endure the Florida prospects as it is free family entertainment. One of the few reasons I would attend a game is no longer.
R_Dudley Posted October 1, 2008 Report Posted October 1, 2008 maybe andrew should watch this Sweet...I think a few more Bflo players than Peter's could use that as a training video. Too bad he's not with Amerks for our Rochester fans...
Two or less Posted October 1, 2008 Report Posted October 1, 2008 What's up with free tickets with the Amerks? Are they really that desperate to get fans in? My gf's dad was also offered free tickets. We rejected though. No point in seeing a team that means nothing to us. And i still dislike Steve Donner. One of my friends said he's still going to go a few times for just it's just "live hockey" but if i have spare time and Sabres are off, i'm going to put a bit more attention towards the RIT Hockey program. When Portland does visit the BCA, i will be there, though. Hopefully next year... lol

One of the few reasons I would attend a game is no longer. MacIntyre will probably be back by then. Edmonton will end up putting him on waivers eventually. No way he sticks. If nothing else, the opener promises to be fight filled. If you're into that. The Amerks were obviously pushed around last year by Syracuse so I think the home opener is a time for Styres to send them a message that it won't happen again.
inkman Posted October 1, 2008 Author Report Posted October 1, 2008 If you're into that. Does the pope #%^$#! in the woods?
nobody Posted October 1, 2008 Report Posted October 1, 2008 You also need to look at the opposing team (I don't know who it is.) Maybe someone on that roster interests you.

nobody Posted October 1, 2008 Report Posted October 1, 2008 That was last season's team I think. I think there is even less to look forward to this year.
Campy Posted October 1, 2008 Report Posted October 1, 2008 The AHL is high level hockey. When I'm lucky enough to score free tix to see Norfolk play against anybody, I'm there. Kinda' surprised so many of you guys don't feel the same - but maybe it's because I live in an area that is anything but a hockey town?

Well maybe once in a while.
carpandean Posted October 1, 2008 Report Posted October 1, 2008 I don't know how to feel about the Amerks. I grew up as an Amerks fan. I became a Sabres fan because the players that I was rooting for ended up going there. Anyone that was really exciting on the Amerks (other than Jody Gage) moved up to the Sabres quickly and built a career in Buffalo. After a while, I started cheering more and more for the Sabres, with the Amerks relegated to a secondary interest. It's an unfortunate part of being a minor league team. There will always be a special place in my heart for the Amerks, but I already spend more time than I should watching the Sabres, leaving very little time for the Amerks. Add to that the fact that all the future prospects that I am interested in are playing in Portland, not Rochester, I've lost the drive of "watching the kids". That said, if I had free tickets and the time to go (don't for the next month or so), I would definitely go. I will also watch any games on TV (on Time Warner Sports Network or whatever it's called.) I, too, like watching hockey, no matter who is playing. I guess we'll start seeing Florida fans growing up here, as those Rochester parents that are Amerks fans first foster a love for that team in their kids. Like I did, they will watch where there favorite players go. Unfortunately, that will be to the Panthers.

carpandean Posted October 2, 2008 Report Posted October 2, 2008 That'll be weird... We had a lot of Orieles fans when the Red Wings were their farm team.

Campy Posted October 2, 2008 Report Posted October 2, 2008 We had a lot of Orieles fans when the Red Wings were their farm team. I remember that well. In fact, I have a vivid memory of getting ice cream at Silver Stadium (I think that was its name) served in a mini O's batting helmet. Despite hating the O's (it was before I decided that baseball sucks) I kept that thing on my bedroom dresser for years. But the reality of, I dunno' watcha call it - the lost connection between the two markets, I guess - hit home for the first time while reading your post. I guess it's akin to seeing an institution you've taken for granted for so many years suddenly disappear. I know it sounds contradictory, but I'm OK with Buffalo's affiliate being in Portland, but at the same time, I'm not yet OK with Rochester's parent club not being in Buffalo. Weird...
shrader Posted October 2, 2008 Report Posted October 2, 2008 This reminds me of my situation this weekend. I have a ticket to a college exhibition game, part of my season tickets. That game just happens to be at 2 on sunday. So obviously the Bills game trumps that one. But do I watch the first hour of that game or just skip it completely? Sure, some of the guys on one side of the ice are drafted and will move on to the NHL, but the other team is a canadian college and those guys won't go on to do anything. But then again, it is live hockey, much higher than the crappy level I play at each week.

Like I did, they will watch where there favorite players go. Unfortunately, that will be to the Panthers. That's probably a good thing for those kids; since when they grow up they will be moving out of NY and heading down south for jobs. This way they will be pretty close to their favorite players. <_<
All Along The Watchtower Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 We had a lot of Orieles fans when the Red Wings were their farm team. That's how I became an O's fan...ugh. But I saw alot of top names come through Rochester: Bobby Grich, Don Baylor, Mike Boddicker, Dennis Martinez, Doug Decinces, Al Bumbry, Mike Flanagan, Mike Mussina, Cal, etc.... And the O's would always come each year to Silver to play the Wings...and being 12, 13 years old in the early 70s, that was the highlight of the summer. Back then, the nearest big league team was in Cleveland. I think it's sad the Sabres no longer have the affiliation with Rochester...hopefully, Donner will be out soon and Tommy G can engineer the farm team back to Exchange St.
