nfreeman Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Vogl thinks Gerbe looks really good: hello Nathan. The kid is the real thing. He's not just better than everyone else at rookie camp. He's much better than everyone else at rookie camp. This is doing nothing to quell my daydreams of Gerbe being too good not to play right away, and as good as Briere right out of the gate. Go Sabres.
LabattBlue Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Pretty high praise by Vogl. I'll be interested to watch Gerbe(along with Butler) at camp next week.
Buffalo Wings Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Gerbe is good, but let's give him some time. I don't know if he should be anywhere close to HSBC until at least halfway through the season.
Hawerchuk Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Very encouraging. Should be a interesting competition for forward spots. Someone tell me why PETERS is taking up a roster spot, exactly?!?!
LabattBlue Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Someone tell me why PETERS is taking up a roster spot, exactly?!?! You just had to bring this up on Complaint Thursday, didn't you? :censored:

Hawerchuk Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 You just had to bring this up on Complaint Thursday, didn't you? :censored: Yeah, I did. Sorry, should have put that in the Complaint Thread, huh? Have a great Thursday......
LabattBlue Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Yeah, I did. Sorry, should have put that in the Complaint Thread, huh?Have a great Thursday...... I took care of it in a short and sweet way! :)
wjag Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 Watching last year's team you always got the feeling they were missing a spark plug. Sure they had their big O nights, but they had a lot of others where something felt like it was missing. Maybe this is what is missing. How the heck they squeeze him into the line-up is going to be interesting to see. Maybe he's our version of Staal this year. I for one would like to see a kid make the jump. Be cool.

They were indeed missing a spark last year. And if they do keep Gerbe -- given how many forwards we have (even if Max is traded) -- it will be because they think he's really good. And maybe, somehow, they keep him and Max and put them together on a line, and that line just goes crazy... Connolly-Pommer-Hecht Roy-Vanek-Stafford Gerbe-Max-Kotalik Gaustad-Mair-Paille extra: Kaleta, Peters trade: MacArthur I'd tune in to watch that lineup, that's for sure. Holy mackarel I'm psyched for some hockey!
carpandean Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 This is doing nothing to quell my daydreams of Gerbe being too good not to play right away, and as good as Briere right out of the gate. Yeah, and then he could learn the other half of the game and be as good as Roy!
shrader Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 Looking good surrounded by a bunch of rookies doesn't mean he'll look good when surrounded by NHL players. The kid wasn't consistent night in and night out at the college level. If he couldn't do it there, he won't be ready to step up right away. At his size, he's going to have to be a top 2 line player to make an impact. There's no way he'll be there at this stage in his career.

I will quibble with the top 2 line point though. Wasn't Roy-Vanek-Max more or less our #3 line for 2 years prior to Black Sunday? They were pretty effective -- the other team's #3 line couldn't keep up. In the 2nd year, Vanek scored 44 and Max was close to a pt per game. I think if we have a ton of offense, Lindy has no problem playing a scoring line as the #3 line.

nobody Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 The Sabres will not go against their established way of doing business. Gerbe will be a Pirate to start the season - but I'm sure he will have many call-ups for a few games here and there. We sure don't want to get into a Tim Connolly type of situation where a player never learns the ropes the right way.
Strow Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 Gerbe-Max-Kotalik Might be the worst defensive line ever!
carpandean Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 Gerbe-Max-Kotalik Might be the worst defensive line ever! I was thinking that, too. At least put Paille on the left wing and send Max packing (put Kaleta with Goose and Mair on the fourth line - now that's a fourth line that could hit, score and energize!)
nfreeman Posted September 19, 2008 Author Report Posted September 19, 2008 Gerbe-Max-Kotalik Might be the worst defensive line ever! I was thinking that, too. At least put Paille on the left wing and send Max packing (put Kaleta with Goose and Mair on the fourth line - now that's a fourth line that could hit, score and energize!) Speed and scoring. This line would put a tremendous amount of pressure on the other team's 3rd line and 3rd defensive pairing. I'll admit that there's a certain amount of risk involved. But Al is actually a pretty responsible guy on the backcheck and in playing the system -- otherwise Lindy wouldn't have him play the pt on the PP. It almost certainly won't happen, but I'd love to see it for a few games.
nobody Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 Gerbe & Kotalik would never get the puck - what a waste of scoring talent.
nfreeman Posted September 19, 2008 Author Report Posted September 19, 2008 Gerbe & Kotalik would never get the puck - what a waste of scoring talent. Max had 51 (!) assists in 77 games in 05-06 and 38 assists in 56 games in 06-07. Prior to last year's debacle, Lindy and Darcy were starting to talk about him as having found his natural niche as a playmaker as opposed to goal-scorer.

I saw that discussion. The existence of such a discussion doesn't mean that the statements expressed in that discussion are correct. Again, pretty much the entire team crapped the bed last year. Max may or may not rediscover his form, but I think it's far from an impossibility, and if he fails to do so, it won't be because scoring is down league-wide.

Feel free to do some analysis of other players through that tie period. Ideally a team would want more of the players who were consistent in their points per game over that time period.
That Aud Smell Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 to the original point, which i only saw because the max discussion bumped it up, i saw gerbe on saturday at puck drop. he looked fine, showed that great burst that he has a few times, but i can't say he really did anything to stand out -- then again, very few players did (stafford was one who did, for me). and one point on max: it was just a meaningless, low-key practice and the arena wasn't even close to being half-full, but there was still that collective buzz when he picked up a puck in the neutral zone with speed. (again, my position on the guy: love the excitement he brings, but think we'd be better off without it.)
