LabattBlue Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 I said it just before the signing was announced and I'll say it again, slap the "C" on Pominville ASAP and LEAVE IT THERE!
shrader Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 I said it just before the signing was announced and I'll say it again, slap the "C" on Pominville ASAP and LEAVE IT THERE! And I say it almost any time someone brings this up. Lindy seems set on a co-captain thing, so split it with Roy. I see no problem with either wearing it. It's their team anyway.
RayFinkle Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 5 yrs, 26.5 million per my "insider" info.....
Barnabov Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 5 yrs, 26.5 million per my "insider" info..... Someone replying to the story on TSN also cited 5.3 mil a year - if so, that's a-ok with me - still sounds like lower market rate given some of the idiot contracts handed out these days by other teams. Cheers to the front office for finally getting some business out of the way when it's supposed to be done - during the offseason!
spndnchz Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 5 yrs, 26.5 million per my "insider" info..... They said this on GR after Darcy was done with his talk. As I said in another thread, the agent compared him to Carters contract and Team DR said fine.
nfreeman Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 I'm weighing in....It was officially a good offseason. Yes. I give it a solid B-plus, with potential to move to A-minus if Max is parlayed into a tough veteran center. Now, all we need is a good start to the season, and last summer's well-earned "F" will start to recede into the ash heap of history. As far as the contract, 5 years x $5.25 million is a good deal for both the Sabres and Pommer. Another nice job by the FO. As a side benefit, my faith in Tom W's predictions has been bolstered. Go Sabres.
wjag Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 The deal just got better. He is playing out the last year of his contract and then getting 5 for 5... So we have him for the next 6.

Two or less Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 I haven't listen to WGR in a couple of months. These numbnuts are worse than I remember. Pommers just signs an extension, the Bills are 2-0, Sabres camp is starting, and they are talking about some guy whose girlfriend will not watch a baseball game with him. Seriously guys? SERIOUSLY? WTF.... LOL i know seriously. That made me mad. I usually am a big fan of WGR Schoop and the Bulldog but today was a joke. In the "dog days of summer" they do a good job talking about hockey, Bills, humor and such and cool topics, but on a day like this, on this week, that was just pointless. On the topic at hand, i'm glad Pommer got what he deserved. The man is a star in the league stats wise and now he gets a paycheck like a star too. He's worked his way up and he's a GREAT role model. It's only days away before he's officially named Captain and he will be captain until the day he leaves Buffalo in 6 or whatever years it ends up being.

FogBat Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 I found out from Facebook in the Sabres Prayer Room about Pommers' signing. Definitely good news. Hopefully, DR got the word not to let a good thing get away from him this time.
shrader Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 I forget who it was that said earlier in this thread that they'd gladly give Vanek's contract to Pominville in exchange for moving Vanek (something along those lines). Now I don't know the exact terms yet, but over the 5 years of that deal, Vanek will be making around $1 million more each year. That Vanek contract is hardly something that will handicap this team. After this season, it is very affordable. It should be interesting to compare those two guys over those 5 years.

Remind me at around the 4 year mark. That is assuming Vanek is still a Sabre at that point! :)
SabresFan526 Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 I'm pretty late to this thread, but I'm totally stoked about this signing. I thought Miller was critical, but Pominville is just as critical. The guy was even strength goal scoring machine in 2006-2007 and is such a key player on the penalty kill and on the power play. He's also such a classy guy. Pominville is quickly becoming my favorite player on this team, and I'm so glad that he's going to be a Sabre for the next 6 years. You know, last offseason, I was extremely critical of this management team when we lost Briere and Drury, and I was very upset when they did nothing to replace them. But, I have to say, I really am happy about this offseason and more importantly they have determined a core group of guys that they are really building this team around. I love that the core of this team is Vanek, Roy, Hecht, Gaustad, Paille, Miller and now Pominville. All except Hecht played together in Rochester and grew up together. All of these guys will be here for a long time, and that's great for the Sabres organization, and especially for the fans. What I find really interesting is they basically have 2/3 of the top three lines covered, and over the long haul, I'm imagining Stafford, MacArthur, Gerbe, and Kennedy filling out some of the other spots. This is going to be a really good team this year and for the next few years. I'm excited!
wonderbread Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 I'm weighing in....It was officially a good offseason. Gotta go with X on this one. Pretty solid OS. Goalie signed long term. Check Point scoring winger w/ Defensive abilities signed . Check Defenseman who can steady the blueline. Check Drunk Russian D-man gone. Check Grit player signed for a few more years. Check Greatest Hockey PBP announcer ever with a new contract. Check I am having a hard time complaining here. Is this really Thursday?

They ended up only adding one significant talent from outside the organization in Rivet. They missed out in a lot of chances to beef up the lineup and plug some holes. They also still have Max and Timmy on the roster which will create larger holes by mid-season.

Once the injuries start (game 2, perhaps 3), that's where we'll be missing a veteran centerman, just like last year.

We all know about the concussion problems (which seem to finally have been resolved)... then he ran into bad luck with a bone spur. Give him this year, start to finish, and we'll see where we end up. Maybe he will break a toenail and call it a career, or maybe he'll score 30 goals and 70 points and establish himself as the closest thing the Sabres have to an elite center. Only time will tell, but until then I'm sick of reading about how he's undoubtedly going to hurt himself and how the Sabres will fail at everything from that point on. Can't we just be optimistic? I think this team has learned it's lesson not to take things for granted... I expect to see Kotalik, Max, Timmy, Lydman, Stafford, and the rest of last years under-performers back at the top of their game and as hungry as ever. On another note, Pominville signing is huge news. Here's to a good year!
nucci Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 True dat... Sorry folks, but there is no way this gets done before the season. If they wanted it done, it would have been. This is going to turn into a saga.. Good call!!
wjag Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 Good call!! Thanks.. You should see what I think about Ruff's future in Buffalo...

Can't we just be optimistic? I really can't agree with this at all. History has taught us to expect injury, that has been his story. Until he puts together a few injury free seasons, he will always have this tag.

Buffalo Fan Posted September 19, 2008 Report Posted September 19, 2008 I'll go ahead and eat my words...congrats to Poms and the Sabres. This is season has the potential to be great...
