tom webster Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 As I said before, Jason will be signed and Max will be gone.
stenbaro Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 My feelings exactly (as to both of the above posts). This will be a real bummer if it doesn't happen. OTOH, it's quite possible that Pommer is asking for a number that most of us (as well as Darcy) feel is way too high. What if he wants $7 million per year? Or even $6 million? As much as I like Pominville, it's not like we're talking about Ovechkin here. I frankly have a hard time justifying a number much above $5 million per year for him. What would be a complete debacle, though, would be for us to repeat the Soupy CF -- ie turn down his proposal in August and then make essentially the same proposal back to him in February, by which time it's too late, and we end up trading him. This seems right to me. I dont doubt he is asking for more than 5 mill per..His numbers justify it..On top of it he plays both ways on both special teams..He has numbers close to Heatley but he plays defense also..I am not saying I would rather have Pominville over Heatley for the same money but if I had to choose either one to play for this Sabres team I would rather have Pominville if that makes any sense..
wjag Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 Oh crap, here we go again. That's my sentiments. Either lock him up by Friday or be prepared to add another Mil to the price...
nfreeman Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 As I said before, Jason will be signed and Max will be gone. While doubts as to your ability to deliver on predictions are creeping in, I admire your definitive tone. This is crazy. I like Pommer quite a bit, but Heatley is a significantly better player. He's a 2-time 100-pt scorer and a 2-time 50-goal scorer. He missed 11 games last year and still had 41 goals. Pominville had one season with 34 goals (on the highest-scoring team in the NHL, and playing with Briere), and one with 27. Darcy would trade Pommer for Heatley in a second.
thesportsbuff Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 You don't think there is one idiot GM or coach who is willing to take a flier on a guy who scored 73 points in his last full season? There are always guys who believe that they can turn a player around, or that a change of scenery/different coaching staff would make all the difference in the world. Max has missed nearly 40 games in each of the last two season. Darcy can easily spin that in trade talks. Hell, he got Dumont, Gilmour AND got the 'Hawks to pick up half Gilmour's salary - in exchange for Michal Grosek. I'd take a mid-to low-round draft pick or a career minor leaguer to get Max out of the system right, and I'm dead serious. Then you, my friend, are an idiot. Assuming Max is still a Sabre when the season comes around, I don't want any of you changing your tune when he puts up the 70-80 points that he's capable of. I'd love to see you guys tear apart every little aspect of our leading point-getter's game. It would put a huge smile on my face. This isn't Rory Fitzpatrick we're talking about here, Max has and has shown a huge upside. It's a risk worth taking in my opinion.

I dont think its that crazy..I wouldnt be shocked if his numbers are very close to Heatleys both on the ice and off the ice in the next few years..His first 2 years mirror Heatleys except for plus minus..

LabattBlue Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 Then you, my friend, are an idiot. Based on the player you just described, then Lindy must be an idiot for reducing Max's ice time when he refuses to play the system and then when that doesn't work he visits the press box. Also, Darcy must be be an idiot because he hasn't signed Max to a contract extension.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on the 2 players. Just out of curiosity, though, what kind of numbers does a player generate "off the ice"?
Guest Sloth Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 "Off the ice" numbers translates into how many times a player gets laid. Pomminstein is married, though, so I assume he has a goose egg in that department.
Guest Sloth Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 Just a thought. Maybe Pomminstein's announcement is actually a good sign. <_<

Why anyone has any faith in Afinogenov is way beyond me. Even when he is putting up points, I'm almost convinced his turnovers lead to more points for the opposition.

Team Strike Force Posted September 15, 2008 Report Posted September 15, 2008 Dunno if it's been said (apologies if so), but what does Pominville or his agent have to gain by making an ultimatum? How does Pominville's agent getting on the phone with Regier during the season amount to a distraction for him? Sounds to me like he just wants a large payday. I won't begrudge him that, but he could still get it if he negotiates during the season. If that doesn't work, he can sign an offer sheet. Don't start all of this deadline nonsense.

Jack, don't ya know it's always easier and more fun to tear apart the non-North American player? I come down basically on your side here. Max has been playing his game since arriving in the late 90s. I think he provides an element of Ruff's system, and that is to use his tremendous speed to back off the defense and open up space on the ice. Not a perfect player by all means, but he's more the player of 06-07 than 07-08. Sorry, I just can't hate on Max. There's a reason people jump out of their seats when he gets the puck at center. OK, BM, it's all teed up for ya. An early Christmas present. Go, my friend.
ROC Sabres Posted September 16, 2008 Report Posted September 16, 2008 I would say this is where the 5 for 25 cliche would come in. But I'm thinking it will have to be something like 5 for 30 to make Pommer's agent say  Or maybe even 5 for 32.5
shrader Posted September 16, 2008 Report Posted September 16, 2008 You're all missing out on one important thing when talking about Afinogenov. Its a contract year.
wonderbread Posted September 16, 2008 Report Posted September 16, 2008 what a minute...who are we still talking about Kalinin? Come on on topic here.

Just for clarification - when was Max the leading point-getter again? Three seasons ago?

OK, BM, it's all teed up for ya. An early Christmas present. Go, my friend. I have no quarrel with you on this one, PA. I have no problem admitting when I'm wrong or giving credit to players that I usually hammer, and if Max reverts back to his 05-06/06-7 form and not to his 03-04 or previous years' form then I'll gladly take my lumps. But over the last two seasons I haven't seen much to indicate that his 05-06 and partial 06-07 numbers were anything but inflated numbers from the "new NHL" where defensemen weren't allowed to touch anyone. Here's another thing to think about: Max's career high for GP in a season is 81. He hasn't played more than 56 games in three of his last five seasons, and missed 52 regular-season games over the last two years. One final thing to consider -- I don't want a regular season-only star. I want someone who is going to step his game up when it's crunch time. And even in Max's best year - the 05-06 season or 06-07 season - he didn't tally more than nine points in either postseason run. For his career, he has just 10 goals and 23 points in 59 playoff games. That's nothing to write home about.

I think that is "fixable".
