tom webster Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 They are starting to feel the effects of the contracts of Alfredsson, Spezza, and Heatley. Ottawa has plenty of cap space, just don't feel he is worth over $3.5 million and also made a bit of a mistake with Gerber.
nucci Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 Ottawa has plenty of cap space, just don't feel he is worth over $3.5 million and also made a bit of a mistake with Gerber. But weren't they tight last year. I thought that's why they made those deadline trades.
carpandean Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 Understand, but there is still a portion of society that believes in "the word is your bond" credo. Amongst athletes, I would say that hockey players lean more toward that rule. Didn't we have a verbal agreement with Drury? :nana: Just stirring the pot ...
Guest Sloth Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 But weren't they tight last year. I thought that's why they made those deadline trades. I haven't looked at the numbers, but I thought, after hearing from other people, that Ottawa was strapped for cash due to Spezza, Alfie, and Heatley. I also heard, during the spring, Ottawa was starting to think about trading one of them in the off season, due to the cost of the 3 players combined. If they were thinking about making a trade, how can they have that much cap space? I hope Ottawa is strapped for cash and they are stuck w/ the three of them. It'll hurt the rest of their lines.

Meszaros is ticked off with the way negotations are going, so he turns around and does something to get back at Ottawa. Not a real character move if you ask me. Yeah, you can say that he's doing it only to get what he thinks he deserves, but I don't buy that.

Smacks of a menu with a can of soup saying he doesn't want to be opened during the season but prefers to wait till the end of the season to be opened to discuss his soupy goodness and how much that menu item is going to cost.

ROC Sabres Posted August 30, 2008 Report Posted August 30, 2008 Didn't we have a verbal agreement with Drury? :nana: Just stirring the pot ... In NY, that's a binding contract. Lets sue!!!

Yeah, you can say that he's doing it only to get what he thinks he deserves, but I don't buy that. I think it would have more to do with the GM to GM interaction. Gilles and Lowe were criticized for not picking up the phone to talk before surprising other GM's with offer sheets. Bryan Murray has been working in the league forever, no need to needlessly piss him off even if you plan to sign one of his players. The old school GM/coaches still think that the right thing to do is to give the guy with players rights a chance to negotiate a trade first.
X. Benedict Posted August 30, 2008 Author Report Posted August 30, 2008 Meszaros to Tampa for Kuba, Picard, 1st rounder.
Taro T Posted August 30, 2008 Report Posted August 30, 2008 Meszaros to Tampa for Kuba, Picard, 1st rounder. Interesting trade. Seems like Tampa gave up a little more than I'd have expected them to give up. I'm not sad to see Meszaros out of the division, but it is probably a good trade for the Otters.

Picard's done nothing in the NHL as of yet. Kuba's not that great. Throw in a draft pick. Frankly, I think Tampa is the winner in the trade, and I'm glad to see Meszaros out of the division.
spndnchz Posted August 30, 2008 Report Posted August 30, 2008 Meszaros gets six year 4 million average. That's not that far off from Ottawa. Maybe he was just tired of Murray spitting on him during negotiations? Looking forward to when the play the Sabres.
tom webster Posted August 30, 2008 Report Posted August 30, 2008 unfortunately, i like the trade for Tampa. Picard and Kuba are washed up: which is good for us. salaries slightly aside  Picard's 22, can you be washed up at 22 if you are not a chinese gymnast?
Kristian Posted August 30, 2008 Report Posted August 30, 2008 Picard's 22, can you be washed up at 22 if you are not a chinese gymnast? Well, names like Patrik Stefan and Alexandre Daigle seem to be nice examples of just that.
Chief Enabler Posted August 30, 2008 Report Posted August 30, 2008 Picard's 22, can you be washed up at 22 if you are not a chinese gymnast? Oops! can I add them to the " has potential" catagory or is too late? :D
wjag Posted August 30, 2008 Report Posted August 30, 2008 It will be real interesting to watch Tampa this year. The remaking of this team has been unbelievable in a few short months. New coach, many new players and an ownership willing to spend. I suspect they'll play a little like the NYR as they started last year. It took them a few months to really gel as a team.

That's what's scary. They're simply doing what has to be done. I wish Sabres management would do the same thing. Fix the mistakes you've made or the problems you have. I can't remember who said it, a credible critic for the NHL, but he just could not believe how the Sabres ended up the after the 06/07 season. I just hope Pomminstein isn't on the wtf did management do or not do list this time. I hope Darcy and Pomminstein are on good terms and they have somethiing in the making.

Just to play the foil for a second --- D pairings? Carle-Meszaros O'Brien-Ranger Hutchinson-Niskala With Kolzig and Smith in the pipes. Yikes.
shrader Posted August 30, 2008 Report Posted August 30, 2008 If they actually think Carle is on their top pair, they're in even worse shape on D than most believe.
Guest Sloth Posted August 30, 2008 Report Posted August 30, 2008 Just to play the foil for a second --- D pairings? Carle-Meszaros O'Brien-Ranger Hutchinson-Niskala With Kolzig and Smith in the pipes. Yikes. Kolzig is a very good goalie. W/ the offense Tampa has and the semi-improved defense they have, Tampa could be scary good this year. Of course, defense wins in the playoffs, so I don't expect Tampa to go too far. The only reason I think, practically gurantee, they'll make the playoffs is the division they're in. Montreal is going to be VERY GOOD this year. Otty will be ok...teams know how to play them, yet Buffalo has always had problems w/ them. I'll never forget the multi-goal lead the Sabres gave up against Otty w/ 7 mintues to play when they, Buffalo, were on the powerplay. That pretty much ended the playoff hopes for the Sabres last year.
Bmwolf21 Posted August 31, 2008 Report Posted August 31, 2008 Didn't we have a verbal agreement with Drury? :nana: Just stirring the pot ... Why you.... :wallbash: In NY, that's a binding contract. Lets sue!!! But they supposedly agreed to the deal while meeting in Boston. ;) If they actually think Carle is on their top pair, they're in even worse shape on D than most believe. True. I think he'll put up some decent numbers on their PP, but from what I've seen (admittedly not a lot) he shouldn't be counted on as more than a 5/6 guy and PP specialist at this point in his career. On the plus side he'll only be 24 when the season starts, and it takes defensemen longer to develop than forwards.

He's another one of those 4th forwards who doesn't add much in his own end. I really wonder if the new owners past friendships may have been a big part of them landing Carle in the Boyle deal. Remember, back in the draft he used a late pick on David Carle because of his connections with Shattuck-St. Mary's. Later he goes and acquires his brother? I'm probably digging too deeply into this one, but what the hell, its the offseason.
Two or less Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 A few months ago, i thought it was a joke what Tampa was doing, but their starting to prove me wrong. Although, i think it will back fire on them. I think they are making a quick fix which could result in Tom_Webster winning $50, but their future i think looks worse now then it did pre-Melrose. They traded ALOT to get Carle and Meszaros. Carle is a player i wanted badly for Buffalo, but last year when i watched San Jose, esspicially late to see Campbell play on center ice, Carle wasn't anything special. It seems like his game hit a early peak and it's stayed there and now could be on the decline. Meszaros is a fantastic player but has always had a great partner.
