deluca67 Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 I wish EASports would have a bunch of retro teams like they had in the Madden Series. I wold love to play the great Habs teams vs the great Oilers teams. I would also love to be able to play as the French Connection. http://canadiens.nhl.com/team/app/?service...rticleid=379851
Goodfella25 Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 That is going to be cool. I think the issue with historic teams is that the players need to sign a waiver or be compensated for EA to use their name and likeness as part of a video game. I know the 2k series used to get away with it by having historic teams with player #'s as their names (e.g., #16 for Pat Lafontaine). Madden used to get away with it too--but I think I remember reading that Jim Brown actually sued them over it. No idea what happened with that. So will this Habs team be a 100 overall on the game?
shrader Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 They should make Dryden wear era-specific pads. But then again, lighting up the Habs dynasty would be a bit too easy.

They seem to have his height about right, but yeah, he looks about 2x bulkier than he ever did wearing the bleu, blanc, et rouge. He kind of looks more like the Parliment Ken rather than goalie Ken. Does anyone know if NHL09 will be released for the Wii?

If they're not allowed to do it w/ Madden or 2K, why can they do it w/ NCAA Football? If I played college football and they were using my number, physique, etc...I would be ticked off.

Probably because college players don't have unions that say they get to maintain exclusive rights to their names / personnal likenesses, unlike members of the NFLPA and the NHLPA.

Actually, there is some type of union type organization that is fighting for the rights of college athletes. I'm not sure if they've gone after the videogame industry. EA allows you to name your players and the announcer will pronounce their names. I've put in all of the names for my college team and the announcer says so and so drops back and throws to yadi yadi yada...A lot of people do this. In a round about way, the players names are being used.
carpandean Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 I'm still ticked off that NHL 09 for PC while continue to be the same legacy generation used in NHL 08 on the PC and PS2, despite most PCs being more than capable of handling the current generation used for NHL 08 on PS3 and XBox 360. I enjoy playing it because they have the players that I am miss watching and they play a hockey-like game, but it is still far more unrealistic than the newer generation. The play is way too fast and many things are still a little too arcade-like. Word is that they will revamp all PC versions for 2010, but who knows what will happen when PC sales slip in 2009. By the way, I've been playing with the current 2008-09 roster in NHL 08 and kicking some butt (not too hard with any team, once you've played it a few times.) Spacek and Rivet are a great combination, especially with NHL 08's overzealous hitting. I was board today, so I took advantage of the stupid free agency and trade system to sign a highly rated free agent, despite being against the cap, then traded him for Michael Peca. I put him as my third line center and second PK team. In the first period, he had a SH goal and two SH assists! It was actually the most lopsided period that I've had in a game so far. Went into the second period up 6-0 with 5 SH goals!. My current lineup is: Vanek-Roy-Afinogenov Hecht-Connolly-Pominville Paille-Peca-Kotalik Mair-Gaustad-Kaleta Spacek-Rivet Lydman-Tallinder Numminen-Sekera Miller Lalime Originally, I had Gaustad centering the third line, Mair centering the fourth and Stafford on Mair's wing. I hate to put Max on the first line, but he's the highest rated player on the team. However, Roy is leading the league with 31 goals and 45 assists in 27 games!

I think they only use last names, which might be their loophole.

"And Manning drops back, has a receiver down field, touchdown!!!" I do understand the loophole you suggested. That's probably what they use as one of their main arguments for the right to name "your" players. EA probably says people can put themselves in the game by allowing them to put in their names and having the announcer pronounce them. It is fun to hear your name in a game.

You can choose to name your players anything that you want and the game is simply capable of pronouncing those names. Unless you are selecting from a list of first and last names of actual players, I don't see it as a problem. For example, if an NHL game allowed you to choose any name that you wanted and knew how to pronounce the first name "Derek" and the last name "Roy" (*), I doubt Derek Roy would have a claim against them because you are capable of putting them together to form his name. * Funny side note: half the time in NHL 08, the announcers call him r-oi (correct) and half the time they w-ah (like Patrick Roy). They also call Kotalik, Ko-tal-lick, not Ko-ta-leek and Tallinder, Tah-lin-der, not Tuh-leen-der.

Going for authenticity, I guess.

spndnchz Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 Actually, Derek's last name really is pronounced the same as Patrick's. It is, but Derek said in an interview once "just say Roy, it doesn't matter to me."
carpandean Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 Actually, Derek's last name really is pronounced the same as Patrick's. I know he's from Ottawa, but is that how he pronounces it at home? I didn't think that he was French-Canadian, but couldn't really say for sure. Anyway, RJ and every other NHL announcer that I've ever heard call him roi, not wah, so the announcers in the game should, too. At the very least, they should be consistent.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Now that Buffalo Sabres forward Derek Roy is making a splash in the NHL playoffs, it might be time to clear up one minor detail: How to pronounce his last name. In Buffalo he goes by "Roy," as in, "Rhymes with boy.' At his home in suburban Ottawa, it's the French version, "Rwah," as in the retired goaltending great Patrick Roy -- no relation.
Goodfella25 Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 It would be so strange to start calling him Derek Roy (wah). He would suddenly seem so French.
deluca67 Posted August 22, 2008 Author Report Posted August 22, 2008 I like the idea of the players on the EA NHL series not having helmets. The game just looks better when I watch the Classic Series on the NHL Network and the players are without helmets. It has been a complaint of the NHL in the past that helmets take away from the personalities of the players on the ice. Why not correct that complaint on the video game version.
Guest Sloth Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 If that's their argument then I'm suing the bastards. My name has never been in the game... :wallbash: Is your last name hard to pronounce? Mine is Hanes, so it's simple enough for the computer. I won the Heisman last season! :D

I don't think it's a difficult name, yet it never seems to be in any of the games...course that doesn't stop dozens of the service industry from butchering it, either. Mayfield, Mayfair, etc....
