shrader Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 I also saw Rhett Warrener and Dixon Ward at the airport. They said they were going to talk to Darcy about putting the band back together. Geoff Sanderson, Varada and Holzinger are due to arrive sometime today. Until Darryl Shannon makes his triumphant return, I'm not listening.
spndnchz Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 I'm not sure that I would ever call a line that includes Vanek "the fastest ever". Roy is quick, but he's not that fast. Now this would be fast: Max-Ryan-Gaborik. Roy is faster than Max. Definition of faster being: skating quickly and keeping the puck on your own stick.
spndnchz Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 You guys know better than me, but IMHO the Sabres are in a pretty good spot with just one weak link. The D is going to be good, bigger guys, some hitters and some hard shooters. Not to say we could use a bit more "fire down low" The forward group is shaping up. Need that vet center, again IMHO. But with some guys contracts coming up, new guys on the way up and that vet center hole to fill, things should be good. If it's Gaborik, fine, they'll have space this year, and room long term with expiring contracts and young guys paid on the cheap to take their place after this year. But, do we really think Darcy will take on someone now or after January?

But, do we really think Darcy will take on someone now or after January? I'd be beyond excited, but I'd also be shocked. I just don't see Darcy going after a player of his caliber. If Gaborik was added to the Sabres list of players picked up/re-signed this offseason, they'd receive an A, in my opinion. I'd give them an A+, but Pomminstein has not been signed yet. Buffalo would be a scary team again if all of this worked out.
inkman Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 ...but Pomminstein has not been re-signed yet. Fixed.
shrader Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 Fixed. You'll fix that but won't fix his spelling of Pominville?

I agree on all accounts, except that I see Gaborik as more of an upgrade (a major one) to one of our wingers (Stafford/Max) rather than filling the hole. If there were a similar caliber center our there, I would rather that they put the money toward that player. If they sign Pommer and Gaborik (and lose Max one way or another), then Stafford will become our 4th line RW (3rd line after/if Kotalik goes at the end of his contract). That would still leave Connolly as our 2nd line center with Hecht as his backup. Also, as noted before, if they sign Pommer for about $5 million and Gaborik comes in and gets extended at $8+ million, then we will have over $50 million contracted for in 2008-09 with 2 defensemen and 4 forward slots to fill. With kids coming up, most of those spots would be cheap to fill, but one of them is still a second line center. Unless one of the kids really makes a lot of progress, we would be way up there in salary/cap hit (with 5 cheap kids - one of whom, probably Sekera, would be on a top-two pair with Rivet - and a $4M center, we'd be up at around $58 million.)
grinreaper Posted August 5, 2008 Report Posted August 5, 2008 What "role" is that exactly? Punching bag.

deluca67 Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 Fixed. Not to be picky, since Pominville has a contract for this season he wouldn't be re-signed it would be a extension?
Guest Sloth Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 Man, did I get bashed for a mispelling (Pomminstein) and not explaining exactly what the Sabres had to do w/ Pomminstein (contract). This board is tough!

The rest of the time it's great.

vasabresfan Posted August 6, 2008 Report Posted August 6, 2008 And what's wrong with that? When I was finishing grad school at the end of the last century, one of my professors suggested that I modify a sentence to begin with "And." I told her that it was poor grammar. She told me that I was old fashioned and that all the cool kids are starting sentences with And these days. After some looking back then, it turned out that it was true. I still don't do it, but it is accepted in the writing community: http://editingpublishing.suite101.com/arti...tence_with_and_ http://www.dailywritingtips.com/can-you-st...9Cbut%E2%80%9D/
