deluca67 Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 The question is, based on who is signed and on the Buffalo roster right now, and assuming he is top-6 and not no.7 - who does he bump? Pair 1 - Tallinder - Lydman? Pair 2 - Spacek - Teppo? Pair 3 - Rivet - Sekera? No. 7 - Paetsch? If Weber deserves to be up here, do you send Sekera back down? Do you move someone else (Spacek, Tallinder?) to make room for him? Or do you leave him in Portland for the first month, month and a half and wait for Hank's first injury? (Note - I have no idea how the d-pairings are going to shake out. This was just a quickly thrown-together guesstimate.) Why would they even consider sending Sekera down? The top six defensemen this franchise has are Tallinder, Lydman. Spacek, Rivet, Sekera and Weber. Those are the six you go into the season with. Keep either Paetsch or Teppo as the #7 and send the other down. You don't have to worry about either one being picked off the waiver wire.
cdexchange Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 So, now that Teppo is back...does he get the C?
Corp000085 Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 So, now that Teppo is back...does he get the C? He does meet the captain qualification of being in his final year of his contract before UFA
inkman Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Weber was our best defenseman playing at the end of the season when he came up..I see no reason why he shouldnt be in our top 6 this yr.. Then they #%^$#!ed that all up by signing Teppo.
Guest Sloth Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Then they #%^$#!ed that all up by signing Teppo. R Dudly made a good point by saying a lot of 2nd year defensemen "simply disappear", due to other teams watching film. Teppo will provide the veteran leadership this team desparately needs and we already know what he is capable of. I hope Weber emerges this year, but you have to play it safe.
X. Benedict Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Weber was our best defenseman playing at the end of the season when he came up..I see no reason why he shouldnt be in our top 6 this yr.. Weber was good. What he hasn't shown yet is an ability to turn forwards around high in the zone by taking away space, something Sekera is really good at. If there is a reason - I think it would be that. I think he'll be up with the first injury. I have a good hunch that we'll see Butler for some short stints as well.
Kristian Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 As long as someone is ready to throw Hank and Lydman into the stands if they continue their give-away show, I'm ok with Weber starting the season in Portland. Knowing Ruff though, The Turnover Twins will play if healthy, no matter how many opposition goals they assist on.

Kristian Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Unless they go with Spacek-Rivet and Teppo-Sekera. Spacek's been know to throw hits once in a while, perhaps Ruff is looking for a little more physique on the blueline from at least one pairing this year?

You don't have to worry about either one being picked off the waiver wire. I know you don't like the Teppo signing, but this is nonsense. Teppo is not going down to the AHL, and Paetsch is adequate in the no.7 role. Weber will be in Portland for six-eight weeks at most, until Tallinder absorbs his first broken arm of the season.

Which begs the question - with essentially two hitters out of the six, do you pair them up and one very physical pairing/two finesse pairings, or do you split them up and give two pairs a gritty player who can let the finesse player freelance a little more?

Good question. I personally wouldn't mind seeing a McKee/Warrener type pairing on a true shutdown line again, but who would be the forwards on such a line? Hecht-Gaustad-Paille perhaps? Somehow I just don' see it happening with the current lineup, so yeah I think Ruff would split up his physical d-men.

From what we have seen from Ruff before this is my guess how he will play it ....
darksabre Posted August 31, 2008 Report Posted August 31, 2008 So I saw Teppo and family at the Clarence Center fair this weekend. His greasy locks shone in the sunlight as he spoke to his children in Finnish. Naturally I played dumb and bummed a marb smooth off of him. Who woulda thought?

Them sin taxes are killers! No wonder they're called "coffin nails." Had I actually run into Teppo, I would have asked him a few things about the Finnish language, i.e. "what does the -nen mean at the end of his surname?" It's common in Finnish. (Believe it or not, "nummi" means "moor".)

ROC Sabres Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 it's probably like "ski" on Polish names lol Just because we're too dumb to spell toboggan doesn't mean you have to make fun of us. Yes, I had to use spell check for toboggan.

He does have a point about surnames in different languages. It was just an interesting correlation.
FogBat Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 it's probably like "ski" on Polish names lol What's really weird are some of those English names where they put two words together and make it a surname. I had a classmate in high school by the last name of Strangeway (and he really didn't get razzed that often). Mine goes all the way back to 100 years after William the Conqueror (Goodwin).

I can say something stupid and no one thinks anything different of it. I'm assuming you do know the toboggan joke though right?
