Too Many Teams Make The Playoffs

You'd have a bye situation, which sounds like trouble.

Agreed.

I'm fine with the current top-8 teams format, but cutting two teams from each side wouldn't bother me.

Trouble doesn't bother you?

I wish they would cut out two teams from each conference from the playoffs

Why?

You'd have to give 4 teams byes in the 1st round which would probably go a long way towards reducing upsets in the 2nd round. I like the fact that a 7th or 8th seed can make it to the Finals and come within 60:01 of actually winning.

I'd hate to see them go to 20 teams making the playoffs, just slightly more than I dislike the idea of cutting back to 12.

I eat trouble for breakfast.

Or is it "trouble is my middle name?" I can never keep those straight.

I disagree with OP. I think that relatively too few teams make the playoffs. For a while the NHL had 26 teams, and the only the crappiest five teams from each conference wouldn't get a chance to run at the Cup. With 30 teams and OTL points, every year now teams with winning records are being denied entry to the playoffs.

For the playoffs, 8 per conference is the ideal, but having a record > .500 and not making the playoff cutoff seems like a deal to me.

But that's something there isn't a quick fix for, unless OTL point rules change.

Seeing as we ended up in tenth place last year, I think they should add two teams from each conference.

I love first round hockey in the playoffs. It is like Christmas for 14 straight days.

Oh, I do too. Best round there is. It's just that by the third round its getting a little silly, IMO. I still haven't gotten myself around the fact there is hockey in June.

But the problems of a bye have been noted. If you either had eight teams or only four teams making it, I'd stay with eight, I guess.

June does seem wrong, but September would not. Maybe they should start 3-4 weeks earlier. Would preseason in late August be wrong?

It's easier for a handful of the best teams in the league to sell tix in June than it is for 30 teams to sell tix in September. There is no way the league wants to compete with the NFL for one additional month.

I'm having trouble with the fact that there's NO hockey in July and August.

MSG will replay some of the best games of the last season from the division teams once August gets here.

Maybe they should switch to the playoff format that is used in baseketball.

Kenny Mayne: So, if the Beers beat Detroit and Denver beats Atlanta in the American Southwestern Division East Northern, then Milwaukee goes to the Denslow Cup, unless Baltimore can upset Buffalo and Charlotte ties Toronto, then Oakland would play LA and Pittsburgh in a blind choice round robin. And if no clear winner emerges from all of this, the two-man sack race will be held on consecutive Sundays until a champion can be crowned.

8 teams per conference is the perfect number. People love to have tournaments that involve upsets and a large amount of work to win the championship. It was incredible to watch Edmonton make NHL history by going to the finals. They were the first and only number 8 seed to go all the way.

As for the OTL system, things probably should be changed. If you win in OT, you should get two points. If you lose in OT, you shouldn't get any points. Teams that win would be in the playoffs and teams that lose would not.

I disagree, I like 8 teams for each conference in the Playoffs. However, I think the league should cut out 10 regular season games. I really hate the Stanley Cup awarded in June. It should end in May, no question!
