BamBam Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 BLACKHAWKS NAME TOEWS 34th CAPTAIN IN TEAM HISTORY The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that center Jonathan Toews will serve as the team?s captain during the 2008-09 regular season, making him the third-youngest player to earn that distinction in the history of the National Hockey League. Toews named Captain! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Its amazing how other teams have no problem picking a captain and going with them. Simply Unreal!
deluca67 Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 The way Pominiville played once he had the 'C' I wouldn't be surprised if he got the 'C' with the new contract.
Kristian Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 The way Pominiville played once he had the 'C' I wouldn't be surprised if he got the 'C' with the new contract. That basically sums up what I've said all along - If you don't have a clear cut leader on your team to give the C, you find the player who improves the most by wearing it, and slap it on him. Simple.

Simple. The player that improves himself, should not necessarily get the "C", it should go to the player that is able to inspire others around him to play better. But I do agree, Pommer would be a good choice.

Simple. Yep. Or go old-school and have the players vote for one. But avoid the rotation nonsense.
RuffRuff Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 Its amazing how other teams have no problem picking a captain and going with them.Simply Unreal! Well, BamBam, that's because the grass is always greener on other teams, remember? To everyone whining about Lindy's rotation last season: You might not like it, but it doesn't make the strategy incorrect, at least for last year's team. Do ya think Lindy knows his team and its personalities and chemistry and motivation points better than we all do? Umm....
inkman Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 Still wondering why Goose hasn't had a sniff of a letter yet. I'm guessing it's because Lindy expects more out of Goose, probably in the way of grit, hopefully with the addition of Rivet it will insprire him a little.

I just find it to be amateur hour-ish, or something you'd do in little league. These are professionals for christs sake. Wearing a letter shouldn't have to motivate them.
carpandean Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 It won't happen, at least not this year, but I would love (assuming Pommer gets signed long-term) for Lindy to come out and say something like "last year showed us that this is Jason and Derek's team. They will be the core of this team, along with Ryan (who can't be Captain), for years to come. Therefore, our new Captains for the 2008-09 season will be: Jason at home and Derek on the road (or visa-versa.)" Give the other A to Hecht or Gaustad, and be done with it.
Screamin'Weasel Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 I really do not remember who was wearing the letters at the end of last season, so this may just be non-updated nonsense, but sabres.com has Pominville listed as Captain and Roy and Hecht as Alternates on the official roster page.

Problem is FO would never allow Lindy to make such a statement, since Vanek is till supposed to be the "franchise player", due to his ludicrous contract. Plus, I'm not sure Vanek himself would take kindly to something like that, and having a disgruntled 7 mill. guy on your team really friggin' sucks. I know, who cares if he's disgruntled right? Well to be honest I don't, but since we're stuck shoveling money down this guys chimney forever anyway, we might as well see if we can develop him into the star player that he supposedly has the tools to become. Announcing that the team belongs to Pommer, Derek and Ryan is not a wise decision in this regard, even if we all know it's true. *edit : Which we don't quite yet, as the jury is still out on Vanek.

Well, you can put a better spin on it. Miller is our anchor on the back end, Vanek is our "big gun" and Derek/Jason are our leaders. I'm pretty sure Vanek knows he's not their Captain (he never even got the "A") and doesn't need any more pressure to perform. You're right that they have to be careful how they say it, but I think it can be done without making Thomas disgruntled.
BamBam Posted July 19, 2008 Author Report Posted July 19, 2008 Look at everything we are saying in these posts about our Captain-less team. What other team has to go through this? Honestly...it just is unreal. Do we see the coach of the hawks saying "Lets see what the young kids can do and in the meantime give it to Soupy or another vet"? No.. Of course not. They identified a young star with talent and gave him the C. Done Deal, and now the team knows who their leader is. Simple as that. The garbage about everyone gets a chance to wear it reminds me of the 15th place team in little league getting a trophy.

It is ridiculous that they can't decide on a captain. Either having the team choose the captain or telling Lindy to just pick someone and stick with it would be the best. I know we have a lot of talent spread out through a bunch of guys so it will be hard to do but if he sees what happens on the ice and in the locker room he should have a pretty clear cut idea about two or three guys that put themselves out there for the team to try and be a leader even if they are failing miserably at it (not saying they are).

BetweenThePipes00 Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 Actually I think Minnesota does the rotating thing too ... Whatever, it's down on my list of things that are a problem ... they supposedly had TWO great captains the year before yet underachieved and we all complained about their effort in the playoffs so ... like I said, whatever. It's just a letter. I have no doubt that a strong captain can make a difference. But then again, when that guy is in the room he doesn't need a 'C' on his shirt to tell you, either.

Generally, I think you are right. However, sometimes you get a young guy who is a natural leader, but he still feels like he's a kid on the team and hasn't earned the right to speak up. You plop that "C" on there and he's starts believing he has. Pommer may be one of those guys. He'll always be a quiet, lead by example, type guy (like Drury was), but it wasn't too long ago that he was the rookie called up from Rochester and people still referred to him as a kid. Putting the "C" on him seemed to do a lot and probably would continue to.
apuszczalowski Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 Maybe not...Some people performed better, and some not so much when wearing the C.If he truly knew his team he would pick a leader. I just find it to be amateur hour-ish, or something you'd do in little league. These are professionals for christs sake. Wearing a letter shouldn't have to motivate them. Maybe thats the problem, he truly knows this team and does not see anyone who he feels is leader material. Its easy for us to siut here and say player 'X' should be the leader, but we have no idea what they are like aside from watching them skate on the ice, and the occasional sound bite and interview that makes it onto the TV and Radio. I don't get what all the concern is over who gets to wear a letter on their jersey. Does anyone really think that a player will stop being a leader because they weren't given the C, or that naming a permanent one will solve any issues the Sabres have on the Ice? So the Blackhawks naemd one of their young players a captain, does that make them a better team? Is that player a true leader on the team? And in my personal opinion, a player who steps up and plays harder only when they have a letter stiched to their chest is not true leadership material.
