Stoner Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 There's an unfortunate choice of words... or maybe not, depending on who is reading it. Who gets the sloppy second period?
inkman Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 There's an unfortunate choice of words... or maybe not, depending on who is reading it first in line. fixed :chris:
BetweenThePipes00 Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 This is about the only message board I have ever come across, Sabres or otherwise, that I can stand to read for more than 5 minutes, let alone post and participate in a discussion. I have disappeared for some long stretches but usually it's because of work getting crazy and not because I get sick of the crap. I have mentioned I work for Rivals.com, and we have some great message board communities on the network that people swear by, and I can't stand to even read them most of the time. I will say this ... I would bet that from that list Weasel mentioned a lot of those people are 25 or older and in many cases 30+ like me ... we probably drive a lotof the young people away, for better or worse, on purpose or not.
Screamin'Weasel Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 Do many people look at how many have voted in a poll? I usually just look at the percentages. Its easy enough to tell when the voting is in its very early stages. Unless they start weigting certain responses, that 7 votes per won't have any effect. Looking at percentages without knowing the total votes cast can be misleading (ie: 100% to 0% when only 2 people have been polled). I know if all 7 votes go where you placed the one vote it will not change the percentages. However, when I look at a poll that shows me the percentages and I see 700 people have been involved in the vote, I do not expect to find that really only 100 people voted. The percentages based on 100 people could and often do change when 700 people are actually polled. When I see a sampling of 105 votes, I don't expect to find that it is actually only a sampling of 15 people. Again, while the percentages do not change, it drastically alters my perception of how broad a sampling was used. If in the upcoming election they said McCain led Obama in WNY polling by a slight margin based on a sampling of 700 people polled, would you believe it to be a true quality poll if you found it was actually only 100 people? Knowing how Liberal/Democratic most of WNY is, I'd say that poll was very skewed due to the scant sampling that was made to look larger than it is.
shrader Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 Like I said though, it tends to be pretty obvious when voting is in its early stages. Unless its a question like "Does Perreault belong in the Hall of Fame", you'll almost never see a landslide victory when all is said and done. The one big question mark though is that if they're inflating voting like that, does it seem like that much of a stretch to think that they may rig the voting as well? Sure, those polls don't mean all that much anyway, but a lot of people find good value in them.
tom webster Posted July 24, 2008 Author Report Posted July 24, 2008 I'll echo Aud Smell's sentiments and repeat his thanks for being mentioned. I'll also thank SW in advance for next year's bitchen highlight videos, which I'm confident will feature plenty of Connolly and Max moves en route to a lengthy playoff run. Yeah baby! Yeah!Guilty as charged, and a bit older than that. While I may not be part of your inner circle and I'm sure I rub some of you the wrong way, I must say that I have enjoyed the banter and would even admit to learning a thing or two from all of you. I, too, am in that over everything below 47 age group and this is actually my first venture into anonymous message boards. I must say that I find it amusing that I get constant requests for links and sources and yet we all hide behind aliases. I, for one, would have no problem posting my real name and joining a board that did that exclusively.

The lack of a first name might cause some trouble though.
That Aud Smell Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 While I may not be part of your inner circle and I'm sure I rub some of you the wrong way aw, come on, t-web, you know you're there, man, even notwithstanding that reality -- there're plenty (not enough?) of opinionated posters around here who raise the dander of the masses. vive le difference!

It's my initials and I have been known to sign many a paper with my initials. Folks at work worked it into a name and I am known by some as Wood-Jag. But if you like, you can call me by my other aliases as well, Bill and Evil Boss Man..
Screamin'Weasel Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 I actually am a weasel. That screams. So I guess that's kinda like a name.

Stoner Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 PA, was that a Sabres' or a Bisons' diary? :P You must be a lot younger than I gave you credit for if the Sabres were kickin' when you were only 15. ;) Come on Taro, check out my birthday!
Taro T Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 Come on Taro, check out my birthday! No doubt you were referring to when Moe-ray-all scored to send it to OT. Right? ;)
Stoner Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 No doubt you were referring to when Moe-ray-all scored to send it to OT. Right? ;) Yup. When Danny Gare scored and slid into the corner, I was on the ice with him. The first hockey game I ever saw on TV, or anywhere. Then the doctor slapped me. A Sabre fan was born.
BetweenThePipes00 Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 Wow I would not have guessed I was almost 5 years older than PA ... I really am old ...
wjag Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 Wow I would not have guessed I was almost 5 years older than PA ... I really am old ... It's amazing... I've had to repeatedly recalibrate what my vision of old is... You ain't old yet.. But you are sure creeping up on it...
carpandean Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 Wow, PA is less than a week older than I am. Crazy.
Stoner Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 Wow, PA is less than a week older than I am. Crazy. No, that's my SECOND birthday -- the day I became a Sabres fan.
Screamin'Weasel Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 Wow I would not have guessed I was almost 5 years older than PA ... I really am old ... There are a whole slew of us 38 year olds here. I'd hazard a guess it is probably throwing the "age average" curve toward the older side amoungst the "regulars" that post here.

Just noticed I hit 2K again... I was closing in on 3K before the crash..
SDS Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 Wow, PA is less than a week older than I am. Crazy. Moses thinks PA is old...
darksabre Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 I'm so easy to find in the interwebs is disgusting. And you're all a bunch of old fogies! :nana: Not gonna scare this youngin away though.
billsrcursed Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 This is why I like to lurk. You guys really know what you're talking about........ engaging in conversation would be cool if I had the time, but us "young punks" have too much going on to committ. That and you guys are all smarter than me!!!! Seriously, I've learned A LOT just from lurking and reading. The level of intelligence is much higher here than any other site I've looked at. And BTW, my avatar is a real pic of me and my 2 daughters, and I also have posted my name, and high school I graduated from pre-crash (I scared Ink into asking who the hell I was...). So no, not everyone here is hiding behind an avatar.
