Is it your shoes? If I don’t switch what shoes I wear on a regular basis, my back and sciatica flare up really bad. And I have one pair that I know I can only wear one day or I’ll be in trouble.

I'd like the option to buy a phone that overall is a mid level phone in almost every way but with a great camera.

Right now, to get the best camera with 10x zoom, you need to buy a flagship.

-I don't need the fastest processor. For almost everything I do on the phone, a mid level phone will work.

-I don't need super fast charging. I'm not on my phone all day non-stop. When the battery gets low, I can put it down and charge it without needing max charging speed. (not to mention the fastest charging usually puts more wear on the battery which I don't want anyway)

-I might play an occasional game on my phone, but I don't need the processor to play super high end games at high frame rates.

-A good screen is nice, but I don't need it to refresh at 120hz.  My current phone has a high refresh rate and I turned it down to 60hz to save battery and its fine.

-I don't need fancy colors, curved screens, super thin designs. Like many people I put a protective case on my phone anyway.

-AI. I don't need, or want, AI on my phone.  I never use it. If I DID want to use it I'd use it on my pc. I don't need to make custom pictures or Emojis.

-AI agents.  Maybe someday it will be useful, but I don't need to talk to my phone to tell it to find a good mexican restaurant within 30 miles of me and make reservations for 4, and text my friends to tell them about it.  I don't trust it will do that without mistakes, and I kinda LIKE doing those things myself.

But I do like having a good camera. Other than calls or texts, I use my phone camera more than any other feature combined.

I know everyone else doesn't feel the same way as me, but I know there are others that feel the same way.  I think if one manufacturer created a phone that was 'decent-to-good' in most categories but put the best camera on it, it would have a pretty good market, costing more than a mid-range phone but less than a flagship.

Every time a new Galaxy, pixel or Iphone or anything else is introduced, it seems to me they are showing off features that are just cute party tricks.  Make it work, make it last, give me a good camera. End of story.

I have a little bit of an odd one, but something bothering me. The new commercials/ad compaign for Skechers sneakers starring Howie Mandel.

There are a few commercials, they are all over TV, streaming and on social media, where he 'tells a story' about him and skechers:

-He wants to buy a pair of Skechers but doesn't want to pay full price.

-He goes into a store and tells them he is a spokesman/ambassador for Skechers and asks for a discount, even though that isn't true.

-He ends up getting called by the head of the company and gets offered a job to be a brand ambassador

-Now he is a paid spokesman/ambassador and gets his discount also.

So let me get this straight...the company wants to hire a 'celebrity' that is probably worth millions of dollars... that lies to get a discount, gets rewarded for lying with the discount and a job, and brags and laughs about it? All the while they are advertising to 'regular' consumers about their brand where most of their shoes cost $50-$125?

Seems a bit arrogant and out of touch.

Nothing personal, how old are you?  I guarantee I'm older... perhaps I should not guarantee it.  I would see it the way you see it.

However, I bet money that my kids would see it as the "harmless lie to subvert corporate greed".  The "go viral" to get brand attention.  The company wants to leverage an "influencer" and thus a star is born.

It's a very different world.

I'm in my late 40's.  Kinda in that demographic hole between the Boomers and Y/Z.

Last week our 25 year old gas fireplace stopped working. It was last serviced with a new gas valve 10 years ago. Had the closest fireplace store come to clean and fix. Said it needed new thermal piles but they didn’t carry the brand. So I went to the dealer that sells them and bought for $100. The repair guy installed them but despite his efforts it still wouldn’t work. Said it also needed a new gas valve, which again they didn’t carry. So at this point with the repair and clean we were out $300 and it still didn’t work.

Went back to the dealer with the parts, and he said the gas valve wasn’t made anymore, we’d have to have all the components replaced. They’d come take the whole fireplace box out, replace at store, and then reinstall. All for $1620. Whoa!

So I went to another fireplace store. They contacted their parts supplier and said I’d cost around $800 for the components. They also gave me the name of an installer who said he’d do it for $200. So if it all works out I will have saved around $600 ($300 if I include the original repair attempt). It pays to compare.

If you have a pair of shoes that when you wear more than one day you will get a backache, get rid of them. I have had two back operations so I'm sympathetic to anyone who has to deal with back problems. I regularly swim and do a lot of walking as preventive measures. But I'm sympathetic to anyone who is in the aching back club.

My niece has ovarian cancer and is undergoing treatment in a "trial" program. The treatment regimen has been changed at least two times because of the complications from the treatment. She called me up a few days ago to thank me for the Starbucks gift card I sent her because she loves their coffee. We had a good talk. She is in good spirits but she does have her bad days. After the call I cried.
