Drulloch Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Senators Sign Smith OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators signed defenceman Jason Smith to a two-year contract on Tuesday. The 14-year NHL veteran was an unrestricted free agent. He was captain of the Philadelphia Flyers last season and was captain of the Edmonton Oilers the five previous seasons. Hmmm.... who should we drool over and not get next? ;-p
iceryche Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Darcy needs to go now. This is absolutely ridiculous. :wallbash: :wallbash:
Goodfella25 Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Well, that sucks. I like Rivet better though, at this stage in their careers. That's probably the best move the Senators have made so far. Even so, I don't think that team's scaring anybody this year. On paper, I like the Sabres roster much better than Ottawa's.
K-9 Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 We would have had him if we weren't so fu*kin cheap. Or if Buffalo was a more desireable place to play. Or if anyone in the FO had a clue. WE SUCK!!! GO SABRES!!!
Two or less Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 lol Guys gotta relax. Darcy said he talked to Smith in the presser for Rivet, and said he doubts something was going to happen. I think it's more that we didn't want him then him rejecting us. I don't know the money terms of this deal, but i don't think he was in our plans. I do believe Teppo is our number one target right now for defense to pair up with Andrej Sekera for the 3rd pairing. And i'm A-OK with that. Hopefully they add a gritty forward though.

A bit of: "We wanted one guy so we didn't bother with another seriously, but then when he said no we were up a creek" not happening to us again. Maybe they learned from mistakes and signed a decent guy before he was gone while we waited for the other guy to make a decision and end up getting burned because both are gone, thing-e. eh, I liked Rivet better anyway. His definition from Winki: A rivet is a mechanical fastener. Before it is installed it consists of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. The end opposite the head is called the buck-tail. On installation the rivet is placed in a pre-drilled hole. Then the tail is "upset" (i.e. deformed) so that it expands to about 1.5 times the original shaft diameter and holds the rivet in place. To distinguish between the two ends of the rivet, the original head is called the factory head and the deformed end is called the shop head or buck-tail. Because there is effectively a head on each end of an installed rivet it can support tension loads (loads parallel to the axis of the shaft); however, it is much more capable of supporting shear loads (loads perpendicular to the axis of the shaft). rivet, rivet, rivet.
Two or less Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Rivet is the much better player. I think we would have overpaid a little to try to get Smith if Rivet deal wasn't put on the table. Since we got Rivet, i don't think we offered above value price. We are not desperate to get Smith. I think we still need to get grit but no way do we need to over pay to get grit.

First, I disagree - we DO need to overpay to get some grit, especially among the forward ranks. And $2.6M is not overpaying for Smith, when he brings grit and veteran leadership.
Two or less Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 But $2.6M is not overpaying for grit and veteran leadership. Yeah, i just saw the money deal.... makes you wonder. Maybe he wanted more if he were to come here? Maybe Darcy has some other deal?

Bmwolf21 Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Yeah, i just saw the money deal.... makes you wonder. Maybe he wanted more if he were to come here? Maybe Darcy has some other deal? That's the part I don't get. I could see if Smith were Hatcher-esque in his decline, or if the Sens threw $4.5-5M at him, but Smith is still good enough to contribute, and at $2.6M seems a no-brainer. Guess we didn't score high on his 9-point system after all. BTW, I did edit my original response right after posting it. Not trying to trip you up or anything, just having a momentary hiccup with the power and wireless network during a thunderstorm.

Yeah i honestly don't understand it at that price, thats a good price for Smith. Like i said, maybe he was asking for more money from us then Ottawa? Or maybe Regier feels confident he can get a better deal finalized? I really hope so, because at that price, this makes zero sense to me.
Barnabov Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Anyone else in the Defense FA ranks worth looking at besides Teppo? Anyone for an Aarron Ward or Miller? Know they're kind of old but I think Weber & Sekera could still use some AHL seasoning with injury callups to the NHL instead of relying on them to be starters. I can't believe Regier is considering Numinnen again after last year's fiasco. I love Teppo but this is like sticking with Connolly all over again and look what that inability to admit they were wrong has cost the team. Last comment: I'd rather have Nolan Pratt for 7th spot than Paetsch - hope Nathan gets a trade somewhere & finds more success or maybe we'll get lucky & he'll rebound this year.
nfreeman Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 At $2.6 million per year or thereabouts, I'd rather have Teppo (whom I suspect we'll get at about $2 million per).

Not the biggest name in hockey, but he can move the puck well, only 29 years old, hard hitter, isn't scared to fight and a good shot blocker. I was hoping for him over Smith if we went that route to be honest but idk, i think i'd prefer Teppo, only because Teppo is a great teacher of the game and can evaluate Sekera's game alot by playing with him i think.
Two or less Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 At $2.6 million per year or thereabouts, I'd rather have Teppo (whom I suspect we'll get at about $2 million per). I don't have a link, because i heard it on WGR few days ago, but it appears if Teppo returns, it will be for between $1-1.2 million per, much less then his last deal with us.
gregkash Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 i wanted smith but i dont think he's critical to our success this year. Anyone ever stop and think, and i didn't either before i just thought of this, that if we signed Smith it's basically bye Teppo, and we knock out any mobility our defense has? Keep in mind that our transition attack has been largely predicated on the defense moving the puck up, joining the rush, etc.. With Smith and Rivet we basically take out that dimension of our game. I think the key now is signing Teppo. We acquired a physical D-man, leadership, in Rivet, this is good, Tallinder and Lydman, Spacek and Rivet, Numminen and Sekera... Paestch By aquiring Smith and Signing numminen like i think we plan on doing that means Sekera is sitting, with Paestch. I do not wish to stunt Sekera's growth like that. Numminen can be had for less than Smith I bet, he has report with the team already and he fits our style of play. If we sign Teppo then i'm completely cool with not signing smith. ps sorry vanek-man, we said a lot of the same stuff but i was writing mine while you posted yours lol.
hopeleslyobvious Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Smith was looking at a lot more than money. Didn't he have a set of nine factors that were going to weigh in on his decision. Maybe his decision to pick Ottawa over Buffalo had nothing to do with the money Buffalo offered or the team.
carpandean Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 If you believe the rumors, last Wednesday we had the best offer (the other being from Ottawa) in and had Smith all but locked up. Then, Thursday we have Rivet and "have not talked to [smith]'s agent today." I'm guessing we were throwing him a good offer and he was playing the "let's see if Ottawa can get close to that" a bit too much for DR. He probably felt Smith wanted to go to Ottawa, so as was said, we traded for a sure deal. I think Rivet has more potential play-wise, though Smith definitely has a lot to bring to the table in terms of leadership. They probably weren't looking to bring in two veteran, physical defenders at $2.5M+, so when Rivet was signed, we all but pulled out. Not sure I agree, but I am less upset than I would have been if we hadn't already signed Rivet. Barnabov - there is a big difference between Connolly's situation and Teppo's. Teppo had a known heart condition that flared up once in a while, but would have required a season off to fix completely. His plan was to wait until he retired in a couple of years and have it done then. Last summer, it got bad and they had to go ahead and do the surgery to correct it, costing him last season. In theory, I believe his heart is now fixed and he has never been injury-prone in any other way during his career.
bob_sauve28 Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 At $2.6 million per year or thereabouts, I'd rather have Teppo (whom I suspect we'll get at about $2 million per). What time is it? It's Teppo time! B-)
wjag Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 I wasn't on the Smith bandwagon.. Smith ddn't strike me as a good fit for Buffalo or Ottawa. We shall see, eight times this year. I guess I'd like to see Weber and Sekera up full time, day one. Teppo, I could welcome him back or I could move on.
jimiVbaby Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 If I had a choice between Buffalo and Ottawa all money the same. I'm choosing Buffalo, no doubt. That team was a mess last season, why would anyone WANT to be part of that?
FogBat Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 I blame society... or maybe arod. On top of that, his soon-to-be ex-wife is about to hit paydirt.
gregkash Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 if you watch the youtube videos of sabres games in ot or game tying goals you'll notice a consistancy on the backend. Teppo is out there. not Campbell, not spacek, Teppo. i think that says a lot.
