inkman Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Maybe it's just me, but I found this article a little unnerving. Daniel Paille is 'only' negotiating with the Sabres? This is news worthy? Isn't that what RFA do? Negotiate with their team. One Sabres player gets an offer sheet and suddenly all RFA are leaving the team? Call it what you want but I think this is Panic Journalism at it's best. Paille Only Negotiating with Sabres As a restricted free agent, Paille could sign an offer sheet with any NHL team, which the Sabres would then have the option to match. If the Sabres chose not to match the offer, they would receive compensation for Paille.

You are talking about the third rated news station's web site operating on a shoe string budget whose staffers probably use this board for a majority of their research. Raise your hand if you go wkbw.com for your sports information.
nobody Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Maybe they're just trying to reassure some of the people on these Sabres fan sites.
spndnchz Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Channel 2 had coverage also. Who wouldn't ask him about his contraact? On Channel 2 they had a blip of saying that "He's just waiting for the call". My read is that the "only" negotiating with the Sabres means that no other team has called him up. I want him back, but at his current level there's plenty of players like him to go around. At his potential level we need to sign him for 3 or 4 years, $1.5 to 2 mill.

frisky Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 I also agree that this is not news worthy. It would be news worthy IF another team offered him an offer sheet since he's a RFA. But, as most of us know, offer sheets are rare. Of all of the RFA's, so far just one offer sheet this year I believe and I can't remember the details.

Vancouver's offer to Backes was the only one so far, but that doesn't mean its over. Penner signed his offer sheet on 7/27 last year.
inkman Posted July 8, 2008 Author Report Posted July 8, 2008 My read is that the "only" negotiating with the Sabres means that no other team has called him up. Which is why it shouldn't be worded that way. Just state that he is in negotiations with the Sabres instead of trying to raise the panic flag.

Paille Only Negotiating with Sabres As a restricted free agent, Paille could sign an offer sheet with any NHL team, which the Sabres would then have the option to match. If the Sabres chose not to match the offer, they would receive compensation for Paille. Actually, I believe, If I am not mistaken, that a RFA can negotiate with other teams, but what ever he agrees to is submitted in an offer sheet and the team that holds his rights as a RFA has the chance to match that offer. The only difference between a RFA and an UFA is that the teams have to submitt "offer sheets" to the players team and the team has a right to match it. So he could negotiate with other teams, but instead is only negotiating with the Sabres. I wouldn't call it panic journalism, I'd call it reporting on a slow news day, and updating the fans on the status of a player. It looks good for his chances of coming back if he is only interested in negotiating with Buffalo

Thats could be what it is more then likely, or it could also mean that he hasa no interest in playing for another team and wants to stay here
nucci Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Thats could be what it is more then likely, or it could also mean that he hasa no interest in playing for another team and wants to stay here Why would he want to play here if our FO sucks?? <_<
Two or less Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 I really don't understand why this kid isn't locked up yet?
apuszczalowski Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 Why would he want to play here if our FO sucks?? <_< Because he is a local kid who's home town is only a 20-25 minute drive over the border?
Peter Puck Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 Paille Only Negotiating With Sabres http://www.wkbw.com/sports/24040014.html The headline would suggest that Danny is merely toying with the Sabres - negotiating with no intent of signing. It should have read: Paille Negotiating Only With Sabres (Better still: With Sabres Only) That would signify that Danny was talking with just Buffalo, which was the writer's intent. This concludes today's lesson, children.
inkman Posted July 9, 2008 Author Report Posted July 9, 2008 Perhaps I should have named my thread this instead.
Peter Puck Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 Sorry, Inkman. I didn't see your thread until after posting or I would have put this here. It just goes to show how slowly free agency has been for the sabres when two of us are commenting on a lame near story.
inkman Posted July 9, 2008 Author Report Posted July 9, 2008 Sorry, Inkman. I didn't see your thread until after posting or I would have put this here. No apology necessary. I think your title is better, actually.
