What if just these three things happen?

I think they might had made the playoffs if Lindy had gotten Jocelyn Thibault 20 starts. Goaltenders tend to play better when they get a regular start. Of the 7 games he started he was 3-3-1 with 2 shutouts. So lets project him out to 21 starts with a record of 10-8-3 for 23 pts with 6 shutouts. Then that puts Miller down to 61 games at 33-19-9 for 75 pts. So that puts the team around 98 points.

Interesting breakdown.

That's part of the reason I am leaning more and more toward Lalime playing a very big role in this team making the playoffs this year. Lalime needs to earn Lindy's trust so he keeps getting starts; and unless Lalime comes in and has totally lost his game (talking Red-Light Racicot bad) Lindy needs to keep penciling him in for regular starts. If Lalime comes in and is awful, then Lindy either needs to grit his teeth and keep playing him or work with Darcy to get a new backup in there.

I agree with everything you say, except that with a 2-year, $2MM contract, Lalime is the guy for at least this year regardless of possible suckitude.

True, the curse of the cap era. I just hope that if he does reach new levels of suckitude, Lindy doesn't nail his behind to bench like he did to T-bo. I would have been fine with gambling with a game here and there by giving T-bo the start and letting Ryan rest; had we done so, we might have squeaked into the playoffs...

Lindy mishandled TBO by not getting him more starts during the first 3 months of the season and then benched him for good(except mop up roles after a terrible west coast outing sometime after the first of the year). If Lalime doesn't have 8-10 starts by the 1st of the year expect another so-so Miller down the stretch.

PS If Lalime sucks, DR needs to go out and trade for another backup. Lindy lost all confidence in TBO and what did DR do about it? NOTHING! Miller wilted like a flower in 90 degree heat and the Sabres playoff hopes went down the toilet.

NO.

1. NO Soupy

2. NO Brierre

3. NO Drury

Last time we were contenders we had your 3 and my 3........ Wake up Larry.

What he said is true... realism isn't an option for you?

The last time Timmy had close to a full season was 2005-06, but even there, he was knocked out of the playoffs with a concussion. Not only that, but the only reason we didn't win the cup that year was because almost our entire defense went down with injuries.

That year, we did not have Spacek, Rivet, Sekera or Weber in our defensive core. It remains to see how much each of those will be able to play and contribute, but it is a different back end. The assumption about Timmy staying healthy should be extended through the playoffs to give us something else we didn't have then. Also that year, Roy, Pommer, Vanek and Gaustad were all basically NHL rookies and not nearly the players that they have become.

I do believe that we need a player like Chris Drury (veteran, top-two-line center) added to this team to complete it (especially since the assumption about Connolly is a big stretch), but I wouldn't say that having all three of the players listed would make us considerably better than adding just the one. Soupy is better than Sekera is many ways now (defensively being one important way that I am not quite sure about) and only time will tell how quickly Rej will progress, but he does fill some of that hole and Rivet is a definite improvement over Kalinin. Up front, we are younger, but if Timmy really does stay healthy, not substantially worse.

Oh my. I wish I had known that there was a "RuffMuff" out there when I signed up. I'd hate to have my posts confused with yours. Waaa, no soupy, no briere, no drury, waaaa!

Do you really think we could afford all three of them? Move on for god's sake.

No. The toughness issue needs to be addressed. Rivet can't be the only physical force on the team.

I understand the toughness you're referring to, but I still think we need to see more of Kaleta.

I'm with you but I don't know if Lindy and Darcy are.

In addition, I would like to see the Sabres get a power play "quarterback" ... I know Sekera shows promise and is solid for the 2nd power play unit, but who will lead the first - Pominville? Connolly? If that gets addressed and leads to some power play success, I can see them being much improved.

Yeah, they are putting ALOT of pressure on Sekera if they don't add anymore puck moving d-men this summer. I do like Sekera, but i think his load may be too heavy to handle for now....

BTW, my 1,000th post for the 2nd time in Sabrespace history!!! YAY! lol

If they were proactive, yes they could have. At their current salaries, probably not

You could always change your name to RuffRuffo. Yes, you have no idea what I'm saying here, but a few people will, so just smile and nod.

I think he should change his name to Stenvar.

Good post. I agree that we need another tough veteran forward, preferably a center. I'm just not convinced that Darcy agrees.

I love McKee and I know he's all heart but the one thing everyone says about Craig Rivet is that he cares about nothing other than his team mates and winning.

He's all blood and guts, imo.

McKee was one of my all-time favorite Sabres. I was OK with letting him go based on injury history and cost (and it probably turned out to be the right decision), but we have really missed him. If Rivet has as much heart as McKee did, it will make a real difference. I just want a forward like that too.
