BamBam Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 SOME KEY REMAINING UFAS (From ECK!) Whats Left The Fab Five (Of Painstaking Indecisiveness) Mats Sundin: Proving money can’t buy decisiveness… Joe Sakic: “looks” to be returning. Should be returning Teemu Selanne: “likely” to be returning. Please return and play in Montreal Peter Forsberg: He is. He isn’t He is. Flip Foppa…. Martin Straka: Is he or isn’t he depends on who you ask in his own camp. True Possible “Difference Makers” Pavol Demitra-The cream of this crop..Vancouver appears to be once again out in front.. Sergei Fedorov-Had a real resurgence in DC, I haven't seen the guy that happy at the rink in a long time. Amazing spot for him, but NJ has some play, as will Montreal. Jason Williams- Really young and talented 27…can play power play point and Chicago will regret not tying him up. IMO Mark Recchi-At the trade deadline he wasn’t moved because Atlanta was trying to get him back Brendon Morrison-Decision coming Monday.. Solid Center. Ladislav Nagy- injury hampered last year… but he is a sniper and maybe the best natural scorer left. Owen Nolan- Huge revival in Calgary, but he should really return to San Jose given the state of affairs True Puck Moving D-Men Steve Montador- Slowly making a name for himself under the radar in FLA. Good alternative to Boyle in Ottawa. Bryan Berard- Proved very valuable for the Islanders last year, could he be Philly bound? Joel Kwiatkowski- talked up highly by many as a one of the best puck moving d-men outside the NHL as he starred for the Wolves in the AHL. The Thrash would be wise to snag him. “C Worthy”: Character Additions and Great Team Players Brendan Shanahan-Any player who can lead the NHL can lead your team. Has already received offers and has always wanted to play in Montreal. Jason Smith-Another go-to-the-end of the earth guy. The Sabres are looking at him and with great reason.. Teppo Numminen-Seriously has potential for comeback player as well. Teppo just does everything so well that you often don’t notice him until he is out of the line-up. Flyers like. Rhett Warriner-One of my personal favorites. I really feel the Sabres to need to jump. Back to Buffalo? Michael Peca-Again Peca will Peck and Prod you. Hate to play against the guy, but love to play with him. Back to Buffalo or Atlanta? Jim Dowd-Huge defensive player who you can put out at any time in any place. Philly or NJ good bets. Grit and Heart Darren McCarty-Really pull for this guy. Was awesome to see him win the Cup. Bryan Smolinski-Bryan can play serious minutes and has the ability to step up. Stu Barnes- Solid shut down forward who has been a cornerstone and staple of the Dallas Stars. Joe Dipenta- Always feel he is perhaps one of the more versatile D-men Solid Depth Forwards Trevor Letowski Sephane Yelle Matt Cooke Sergei Brylin Chris Gratton Jeff Hamilton Randy Robitaille Brad Isbister Aaron Asham Martin Lapointe The Solid Depth D-Men Nolan Pratt Marik Malik Jaroslav Modry Bret Hedican The Comeback Players Could Be’s Sandis Ozolinsh Geoff Sanderson The Specialist Yanic Perreault
ROC Sabres Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 Should probably add that this is from Ek in the thread topic.
shrader Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 If you're going to post something like that, you could at least quote your source.
BamBam Posted July 5, 2008 Author Report Posted July 5, 2008 Should probably add that this is from Ek in the thread topic. I was going to do that, but this is more of a factual list of who is remaining. I realize some of his comments are still in there, but your probably right. Could've gone either way on that.

Just figured I'd head you off at the pass before someone else jumped all over you about it.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 Anybody under 32 on that list? I'm all for gritty vets, but that list is there for a reason.
will Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 Fixed mutha... wasted a click. YOU KNEW THE RULES AND YOU BLEW IT!
Bmwolf21 Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 Anybody under 32 on that list? I'm all for gritty vets, but that list is there for a reason. I was thinking the same thing. A lot of guys well on the wrong side of 35 and/or coming off injured-filled campaigns on that list, so it's not surprising they're still out there. Not a lot of real value listed, IMO.
carpandean Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 This would have been a pretty good list back at the turn of the millenium.
BamBam Posted July 5, 2008 Author Report Posted July 5, 2008 mutha... wasted a click. YOU KNEW THE RULES AND YOU BLEW IT! Come on now... The list is Fact Based. There's no Gaborik to Buffalo nonsense in there.
Eleven Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 Come on now... The list is Fact Based. There's no Gaborik to Buffalo nonsense in there. Appreciated the list of who's still around, because TSN and a few other sites I've checked haven't had it, and (as you know) I won't read Eklund unless I need a laugh. So sincere thanks for putting that up, and indeed it is fact based. There are a few interesting ones on there. I still want to see a two-way vet forward, and Peca would fit the bill nicely. So would Yelle and LaPointe. Maybe Isbister. But if the Sabres were to add another defenseman instead, especially one named Jason Smith, I'd be willing to let go of the need for the forward. And I've admired Montador's play lately; I think he could come as a nice value pickup. The guy made less than $1M last year, right? I'd give him a 3x 1.5M deal in a heartbeat, and would consider 3x2M. Here's a question: If you can get Peca and Montador for the same price as Smith--not unthinkable--which would you choose? The combo or just Smith?

The combo or just Smith? Peca will always be one of my all-time favorite Sabres. I just don't think his body will hold up through 82 games. So in my mind, your equation is Montador vs Smith. Montador is 29 and cheaper. Give me liberty or give me death and while you're at it, give me youth and cheaper. Montador played in 73 games and had 23 points. Smith is 35 (old IMHO for a Dman) and had 10 points in 77 games. I'm not on the Smith bandwagon yet.

Matt Cooke signed for 1.2 today I believe with the Pens. Not a bad pickup at a reasonable rate.

The more i read about him the more i like him. Seems like he also hits like a train. And apparently he's a great fighter and has a good shot.
