Team Strike Force Posted July 4, 2008 Report Posted July 4, 2008 As of right now, Buffalo's 08/09 cap hit is $42.123 million. Needs that have been identified have been to: 1) Extend Miller and Pominville 2) Sign RFA's Bernier, Paille, and MacArthur 3) Get help on D, and possible at C. Supposing Miller gets resigned to the average of Fleury and Lundqvist, his yearly average salary would be roughly $5.9 million. Supposing Pominville signs for Roy type money, plus "inflation", I think it's reasonable to say his average could approach $5 million. I think these two contracts would be on the high side, but you never know. If these get done that raises the cap figure to $49.323 million. With the Sabres' imposed cap of $50 million, that leaves little left to pay Bernier and Paille (and MacArthur, but if I'm not mistaken he wouldn't count against the cap in Portland). Looking at the numbers, I'm not seeing how anything can get done RE: Jason Smith or any other UFA. In order for them to do that, they'd have to trade Max and/or someone else. So this morning's report about Max could be bubkus.
shrader Posted July 4, 2008 Report Posted July 4, 2008 Any Pominville or Miller contract wouldn't kick in until next year. They have no impact on this year's cap at all.

I didn't realize that's how it works. So if Miller gets extended, he'll still make $3.5 million this season? Ditto for Pominville?

Yes, and his cap hit is still 2.67. If the extension kicked in immediately, they would essentially be restructuring that last year. They don't allow contracts to be restructured because that leads to nothing but games with the cap.

They would still fall under their current contracts for next season. Then, in 2009-10, their new contracts (extensions) would kick in.

Which would be included in the original number. It looks like the Sabres are going to fall way short of their projected $48 million budget. It's a real shame that the $6 million left and the $6.5 your paying Max and Tim could have been used to make the Sabres a playoff team again. It's still really frustrating to see so many opportunities to improve the hockey club go by.
Team Strike Force Posted July 4, 2008 Author Report Posted July 4, 2008 Thanks for clarifying. Sorry for posting an irrelevant thread.
