Bmwolf21 Posted July 4, 2008 Report Posted July 4, 2008 It has to be a sales pitch. If this team is counting on Max and Connolly it's going to be a long season. There is a huge difference. The Sabres are a better team with Connolly on the ice. True. As to where the Sabres are effectively on a 4 on 6 PK when Max is on the ice. Friggin' waive him if that's what it takes, but please please please just get rid of him.... I can't stand another season of watching the idiot try to take on 5 guys on his own, and in turn end up setting said 5 guys up on yet another odd-man rush. Well it's that, or take one of his "oh fook, me lose thee puck again" penalties and kill any momentum we may have going, which appears to be the lesser of two evils :wallbash:  OK, I still don't think they did it to start a panic, but as someone who has worked in the business, that just reeks of laziness ... we have a hole on the page and no Sabres story today, so let's just re-use 5-day old quotes? They couldn't find someone to write six whopping paragraphs about how nothing new went down yesterday but they may be in it for Jason Smith? Did they pull Vogl out of bed at deadline to write that and that's what he had in his semi-conscious state? Yeah, you're not kidding. They couldn't find an AP story about anything to fill 12" of space? Hell they could have found someone to write 12" on the Zamboni in about 20 minutes or so. I find it hard to believe a paper like the News would do something like that - that seems like something a smaller daily would do.
Goodfella25 Posted July 4, 2008 Report Posted July 4, 2008 I think there are very few on this board that think Max or Tim have any trade value. I think many would have preferred they were bought out or sent to another team for "future considerations". I don't think anyone expects either of those to garner any serious return. Yea but how could we buy them out when they're going to be counted on as key contributors? Many people here were not alarmed by Regier's comments the other day--but I was. Specifically what he said about our depth at center and how Tim Connolly will be fine and counted on as the #2. My God this team is frustrating. And this management--with the Bernier trade today, and comments like the one I just mentioned, it's not even a question of "do they know something that we dont", it's that they don't know anything. I'm sorry but I'm drifting to the darkside on this mangement. They better do something to pull us back into the light.

Just wait until next week when the Sabres announce they have signed him to an extension, 5 years $25 mil All while Pomminstein and miller are still in early negotiations on extensions

I hope your right... cause between here and the hockey buzz sabres section everyone seems to think that the offering I spoke of is the secert elixer to cure the Sabres.

I agree its lazy but its a holiday edition of a local paper in a one paper town and is part of an industry that probably has a shelf life of two years. Once the baby boomers figure out you can read a lap top easier then a news paper while on the toilet, only those people with bird cages are going to need a newspaper.

The other thing you mentioned was a reading comprehension thing. Was there actually anything in print that said the quote was old, because there wasn't anything online that said that.

Was there actually anything in print that said the quote was old, because there wasn't anything online that said that. Who cares if it was old. And in any case, it was 4 freakin days ago that he said it, not a year, not 5 years ago, 4 days. I didn't realise that quotes had to be less then 24 hours old before they are old and cannot be used ever again

LabattBlue Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 I'll be very disappointed if Max is still a Sabre on opening night and I get the feeling so would most of his teammates. His act has grown old here and he needs a change of scenery in a big way.

Our biggest fears are coming to fruition: A few other updates Friday from Regier: On a trade involving Maxim Afinogenov: ?The Max front is very quiet. I expect Max to start with us based on the activity of the summer.? :wallbash:

It's seems so absurd and a waste of the limited financial resources. I find it hard to believe that they couldn't even get a later round draft pick for Max. We knew Max's value was low. I had no idea that it had hit rock bottom. Any chance the Sabres can talk Max into playing in Russia this season? Would the Sabres get cap relief if went and played in Russia?

X. Benedict Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 I'd rather see the Bills sign Losman to an extension and make him the starter than have to watch Max in a Sabres uniform again. <Tweeeeeeeeeet> 67, 2 minutes for gratuitous Losman reference on a hockey board.
deluca67 Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 Let's stop running people out of town. Max will rebound. Players "don't get run out of town" they play themselves "out of town". What's that old saying? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. Max and Timmy have had a combined 13 seasons to prove what they can do in the NHL and both have disappointed time and time again.

carpandean Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 The problem with Max is we are trying to "sell low" and, as we all know, you should "buy low, sell high." Had we tried to trade him last summer, GMs would still have known that he has faults, but they would have been looking at: - 134 points over 133 games the previous two seasons - > point-per-game average in 06-07 - +25 over the previous two seasons - +19 in 06-07 - key part of one of the most prolific third lines in the NHL instead of: - 112 GP out of possible 160 over previous two seasons - half a point-per-game average in 07-08 - -16 in 07-08 - moved from second to third and finally to fourth line It isn't likely that they would have gotten much for Max and definitely not what they felt he is actually worth. I wouldn't be surprised to see him start, perform well (still frustrating on occasion, but putting up some points) and then get dealt when his value is a little higher. Max will be in a contract year next season, so let's hope he acts like it.

IMO, it's would be more important to have the $3.5 off the books than it would be any contribution on the ice Max could muster.

Give him his chance in his contract year, and we may just get something out of/for him. Besides Pommer, who else really excites you over there anyways?

HurlyBurly51 Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 Kaleta? :nana: Kaleta is my Franny boy, so I'm all for his roster spot
LabattBlue Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 We knew Max's value was low. I had no idea that it had hit rock bottom. It all depends what DR is looking for in return? Maybe he is asking for more than the market for Max will bear. I would still trade Max before the season and either bring in a cheap vet for the 4th line or go with the following. If they bring in a cheap vet, MacArthur becomes the spare forward with Petey. Vanek-Roy-Stafford Kotalik-Connolly-Pominville Paille-Gaustad-Hecht Kaleta-Mair-MacArthur Extras- Peters
inkman Posted July 6, 2008 Report Posted July 6, 2008 Kaleta? :nana: Kaleta is the Sabres single most exciting player and that is not a bad thing. he needs a bigger role, period.
LabattBlue Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 I don't buy any of the speculation being thrown around that there are no takers for Max. I know he has his flaws and has worn out his welcome here, but I don't believe for a minute that there is no interest in acquiring him. The only reason he is still a Sabre is if DR is looking for a kings ransom in return. If and that is a BIG IF, there is truly no interest in any team trading for Max(even if a mid-round pick), then why should the Sabres hang on to him? Cut your losses, buy him out and move on.
