Kalinin Signs with NYR

Two or less

What's this obsession with getting something in return for pending UFAs? Unrestricted free agency really tamps down the returns for players - why give something up unless you think the player you're adding will get you over the top for the Cup? And with Kalinin - would anyone have given more than a 5th round pick for him as a rental? We were making a serious run at the playoffs last spring, and only missed by four points. I think Kalinin was worth more than a 5th round pick at that point.

My ? is how can the Rags ice and entire team? They have to be close to the cap and it appears they have 19 players under contract and are close to the cap. How is this possible?

I wondered the same thing last year. It's almost as if the Rangers do not have a cap.

I was completely indifferent to him as a Sabre. The good news is that we NOW have a bonafide roster spot that begs for some FO move. It might be from the farm or from the FA market, but there is gonna be a new face in Buffalo.

It was as much of a guarentee as you could get that both Weber and Sekera would be in our top 6 d-men to start the year. And hopefully Jason Smith with those to go with Lydman, Hank and Spacek.

By most accounts, the Rangers still had $3.4 million in cap room before signing Kalinin and I can guarantee he didn't get that much. That is with 3 remaining restricred free agents and 22 players under contract.

The scary thing is that Kalinin was by far the Sabres most talented defenceman. For those few stretches of games when his head was on straight no other defenseman, not even Campbell, came close to him. It's a good gamble for the Rangers. You take a chance on a player for next to nothing that could possibly reap great rewards. It wasn't going to happen for him here in Buffalo. It doesn't mean a turn around will never happen.

They were?

If they were making a "serious run at the playoffs", they would have done alot more then just trade away one of their top 4 defencemen to get a prospect and some picks back. Thats not making a serious run, thats giving up and running out the season.

37 career playoff games and a +18.

I really wonder sometimes how many of you actually watch the Buffalo Sabres play. If you can deny Kalinin's talent that tells me you haven't watch very many of his games. When he is off, which was too often, he was as bad as everyone says. When he was on? There is no denying his hockey skills.

He is much better than Pratt and we still have him. If we don't get some decent help on D before the start of the season, this lose will show.

Pratt is an UFA. He's not currently on any team.

Kalinin was great when he played with Zhitnik. When Zhitnik left, Kalinin started to struggle. He did have alot of very good games, but more bad games then not. I wouldn't really look into that +18 too much, when we were stacked and winning, he got the pluses, when our backs were to the corner, Kalinin was on the bench. Didn't he like average 5 minutes/game in the Ottawa series when we lost?

That Series was Kalinin's career in a capsule. In the 4-3 OT loss he played 22:29 an was a +2. The final two games he played less than five minutes.

Most important part in bold. In terms of all-around talent, he's as good as most defensemen in the league. It seems the mental part of his game was his undoing here.

Kalinin was also very good when paired with Teppo, because I think Teppo was a calming influence on him and gave him confidence in his play. It's no surprise to me that his most inconsistent year in Buffalo was when Teppo missed 98% of the year.
