Two or less Posted July 4, 2008 Report Posted July 4, 2008 I'm a little worried that we won't sign Smith. From all i've read today, Dan Boyle was Ottawa's #1 target for defense. Since Smith has waited, maybe he was waiting for Boyle to go else where and we were just plan B? We'll see what Smith does, but i think with Boyle gone, Ottawa will raise up the money and lock him up.
sabresnutinphoenix Posted July 4, 2008 Report Posted July 4, 2008 Let's face it...if you were a player would you want to come to this organization...I'd say no just based on Larry Quinn...

outlaw16511 Posted July 4, 2008 Report Posted July 4, 2008 How many players do you think know Larry Quinn? I'm sure a few do but I bet every player's agent does.
apuszczalowski Posted July 4, 2008 Report Posted July 4, 2008 How many players do you think know Larry Quinn? If they have never played for the Sabres before, probably none, unless you told them he was that guy that sits next to the GM during PC's As for the Blog, who was the member here that wrote that? It became obvious with the Orpik comment and the 5 for 25 comment that it had to be someone who frequents this board

I feel the reason everyone is so big on him signing here is because someone suggested he might be in talks and that they all try and hype him up to make it a big deal. I really don't think right now he will be much of an improvement to the defence due to his age, and the only thing he will provide is some veteran leadership. He basically another Teppo signing. A player who was solid in their prime, and can still contribute, but at this point in their career they are a risk to spend large amounts of time on the IR, and are mostly still around for their veteran leadership. He is not going to be the guy to solve the Sabres problems. He won't hurt the team if he can stay healthy, but he is not going to turn the team around.

He's got a little more upside than Numminen--even as of when Numminen first came here. Smith has captained two teams, one to the seventh game of the Finals, and another that greatly overachieved last season. He's a little younger than Teppo was, too. I'd love to have him on this team if he'd accept a 3 or 4 year deal. I wouldn't go 5.
carpandean Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 http://www.nhlline.ca/ New rumor: the Sens are now front runners with Smith since we signed Rivet. I wouldn't be as upset about not signing Smith since we got Rivet, but I wouldn't mind signing him, too. However, we probably wouldn't want him long-term - especially with Rivet under contract for three years - which he probably is looking to get from the Sens.

Here's what WGR's article has to say about Smith and a couple others (sorry if a re-post): It appears if the Sabres are out of the running for Flyers defenseman Jason Smith. Regier said he spoke to Smith's agent yesterday (7/3) but it sounded like Smith was close to signing elsewhere. Maxim Afingenov will probably be a Sabre next season, Regier said the Max front is "very quiet" and he expects Afinogenov to be on next year's roster. There hasn't been much talk with Ryan Miller as of late, but Regier said he expects to talk to Miller and his agent in the next couple days. Regier has also had talks with the agent for restricted free agent Daniel Paille and is in the process of contacting the agent for fellow RFA Clarke MacArthur. LINK
carpandean Posted July 5, 2008 Report Posted July 5, 2008 I watched the presser that's up on sabres.nhl.com and DR was asked about Smith. He said that he had talked with his agent yesterday, but not today. He said Smith is still on there radar, but (jokingly) he may already be signed elsewhere. Clearly, they would still like to have Smith, but the urgency and their willingness to pay have dropped since signing Rivet. It does sound more and more like Max and Timmy will be in the lineup on day one and we won't have another top-two-line-capable center to cover when Mr. Glass breaks.
carpandean Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 Surprising that we haven't heard anything about Smith since the rumors of last Friday. I don't see the Sabres pulling the trigger on him anymore, given that they have Rivet, but maybe if his other options dry up ... I'm guessing the hangup is over the length of the contract. The Sabres might like to have him for 2-3 years, but I doubt they want to commit to a longer term deal with young guys developing that could move up in a couple of years. Plus, they would probably have to find a way to unload Max first in order to stay under their budget.
Two or less Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 Darcy makes it no secret that he still wants to add another defensman, although i think Teppo is the favorite at this point, but we've been rumored with Smith and Montador, but since nothing has been said in days as you say, i really hope it just means that teams are making these guys wait to see where Jay Bouwmeester goes, and hopefully Darcy is trying to land him? I can only hope... lol
