Sabres MAY be interested in Jason Smith

I go back a little further than the previous two offseasons to bolster my belief that they'll do something. Last summer and offseason 06, they were the tree with all of the ripe fruit. Obviously, we know that could have been handled better, but it wasn't and most of us have moved on. Last offseason also saw them tie up a bunch of money in Vanek. Maybe that was money earmarked for someone else, but Vanek was deemed the higher priority at the time.

With this year's finish, now Darcy finds himself in a position where he has had success in the past- with a young team that will improve with experience and that with the proper moves and additions can have some success in the playoffs again. I don't know enough about other teams to know what these moves could be.

Maybe it's reactionary thinking to the lack of activity the last two days. Maybe it's when Darcy says he's seeking trades, I believe it. It's worked before. Hopefully, Max can still bring something in.

WGR reporting that Jason Smith and Buffalo in negotiations. We'll see what happens.

Good for you. You've "moved on" and are willing to give the FO the benefit of the doubt. I've moved on, too - but I haven't forgotten how they screwed the pooch last year. And there is no way I can give them much credit for tying up a lot of money in Vanek, because they backed themselves into a corner and were forced to match (and it's way too early to tell if that was a good or bad move.) Let's not forget they made no moves to offset the losses or improve the team - not in the offseason, not in training camp, not throughout the year, nothing.

But what are we building for? A team to have "some success" in the playoffs, or to win the Cup? That's the question, and it says a lot that Darcy had to ask LQ what the team's goal is.

I'll give them credit if/when they make some moves. Until then I am going to look at them as the same group who completely dropped the ball last offseason and failed to improve the team throughout the year, leading to us missing the playoffs, and has thus far stood pat. It remains to be seen whether them standing pat in FA thus far was right or wrong, but for now their inaction is not exactly inspiring.

I think they will include him in a package.... probably Florida, they were very high on him from what i heard.

That would be good news.

I can see MacArthur being a little like Chris Thornburn.....everyone being a little broken hearted when he doesn't clear waivers.

I don't give a damn if he has lost a step, Smith is a warrior who will do just about anything to keep the puck out of the net. He would be a great inspiration to the other blueliners and a mentor to Weber, Sekera and all the other younger blueliners in Rochester........I mean Portland!

Smith would be a good signing, particularly if we end up keeping Pratt or Numminen or both. The three of them could each be paired with one of the younger kids and help them get better, while providing some toughness and stay at home attitude that is desperately missing on D. Forwards need to be able to fly. The D needs to move, sure, but they also need to be able to play D and hit people. Last year, the team didn't have that. I am a bit disappointed that Buffalo didn't get Orpik, but I think Smith would bring some much needed experience and physical play to the team.

Stafford will be on the team, but MacArthur might not be. He has as tough battle to get back on the roster.

Just read the WGR article. I would not mind having Jason Smith at the right price. But, if you read the article, he has a nine point criteria on where he decides to sign. It seems too complicated, and I just can't imagine the Sabres meeting all of the 9 points he is looking for.

I'm beginning to think more and more the Sabres might bring back Rhett Warrener on a one year deal at sub $1 million and also bring back Teppo for his usual contract of one year $2.6 million. I think next year's d-pairings will be:

Tallinder-Lydman

Spacek-Sekera

Teppo-Warrener (interchangeable with Paetsch much like Pratt was this year depending on the matchup)

7th - Paetsch

8th - Weber

9th - Butler

That's what I think will end up happening.

You wouldnt mind Jason Smith at the right price? Where does his signing hurt your check book?

You people really believe this crap

Serious question...If the Sabres have become such a joke in your eyes, why do you even bother?

PS I fixed your tags for you, so that LOL is now BIG

I have no idea if they really are talking to him or not. I am hoping so and forgive me for dreaming a little.

Thats what gets me..I dont understrand as a fan why you wouldnt want your team to spend to the cap maximize every dollar possible to put a winner on the ice..Put a better product on the ice and raise the ticket prices to help cover the players cost..Dont improve the team dont expect the fans to show..Its a nice little check and balance..I dont spend their money they dont spend mine..They dont care how I get my job done as long as I get done....If I have to buy a bigger piece of machinery to do it to get the job done then its on me..Its no different in my eyes to them..If they want my money put a real team out their...If this team gets better with age then so be it..But youre gonna have to show me to get me to spend my money to watch it

Oh man, your going to get punished for this post. Please dont try to inject sense here. Many Sabre fans here are not really hockey fans, just Sabre inside business fans, and every penny Tommy G can rape out of us morons who watch the hockey part counts!

Then there is the few in here who need the Sabres to lose, so they dont look in the mirror and feel like they are the only loser in life...

If they are a joke in his eyes it doesnt mean he cant want them to get better and cant be angry that they arent getting better in his eyes..You might not agree with his view but it doesnt mean he doesnt care and doesnt want to bother...

us morons

Well at least you know your place here. Seriously, why do you continue to troll around this board only when the fan attitude is negative? You are completely worthless and add nothing to this board. I can't wait until you disappear again for another 4 months.

Just bring some logic into the discussion and his posts would at least become worthy of reading. It's good to know that nbf has his supporters out there.

Point the Eighth: I?ve always dreamed of signing a contract for 5 years/$25 million. Can I do that here?

No. First of all, you?re too old and slow for that contract. Secondly, no one around here is even sure if the mythical ?5 for 25″ actually exists. Rumors of its existence have been floating around since January ?07, but no one has ever actually seen it, much less applied it to an actual Sabres contract. If you want more information on this confusing topic, you?ll have to consult Buffalo?s 5-for-25iologist, Bucky Gleason. Buffalo?s score: 0 out of 5 chicken wings

So what are the odds that he signs tonight with either team? Cuz if he doesn't I'm thinking its probably going to wait until saturday.

Did I mention that I'm not a patient person? I hate waiting! I'm already waiting to have my new laptop built/shipped ... and now this!?
