darksabre Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Didn't know about the post earlier, sorry. The reason I wanted to post that is I am listening to WGR right now and a few minutes ago they had a sports update which made it sound like talks are continuing. I hope you're right. I want something to happen. ANYTHING! I'm like an impatient little kid. My head says "relax, everything will be okay" and my gut is screaming "AHHHH WE'RE SO F*CKED! DO SOMETHING!!! DO IT NOOWWWW!!!"
Goodfella25 Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 I hope you're right. I want something to happen. ANYTHING! I'm like an impatient little kid. My head says "relax, everything will be okay" and my gut is screaming "AHHHH WE'RE SO F*CKED! DO SOMETHING!!! DO IT NOOWWWW!!!" That's exactly how I feel. I've always like this player though, as I mentioned before dating back to his time with the Oilers in the early 00's (that sounds weird to say, 00's). So although we know he's past his prime, I would still be excited to get him on the Sabres.
Two or less Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 I hope you're right. I want something to happen. ANYTHING! I'm like an impatient little kid. My head says "relax, everything will be okay" and my gut is screaming "AHHHH WE'RE SO F*CKED! DO SOMETHING!!! DO IT NOOWWWW!!!" Does it matter who? Seems like some people just want us to sign anyone just for the sake of signing someone so it gives us something to talk about..... Darcy's best feature is he keeps cool and always tries to make the club better. I think signing Jason Smith would be genius to a deal something like 2yr, $5-6 million. There might not be a better player in the league to mentor Mike Weber then Smith.
Team Strike Force Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Right on. Smith is old and not as good as he used to be, he's slow and won't really help any of our rushes up the ice, however, he's just as good in hitting as he's always been, he's a force on penalty killing and blocks shots. He's the longest captain ever in Edmonton Oilers proud history and was the captain last year in Philly which just shows he's a great guy, great leader and i'd love to have him here. OK, I buy this argument, and your comments above. But if nothing gets done here with Smith, I'm not going to put my head in the oven. I think Buffalo will do something of note to attempt to improve the team before the season starts, whether it's today or at a later date.

If they get Smith signed, i still think they will look out for deals and other free agents. Darcy never panics and never "feels the heat" from the fans. He takes time and makes sure we get the right deals for a good future for the team.
Bmwolf21 Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 I envy the people who have faith that "they'll do something to improve the team." I wish I had that optimism, but given the inactivity last offseason and their reluctance to be aggressive and make some sort of move to make the team better, I fully expect that none of the moves we are hoping for - Max gone, adding a no.2 center/a top defenseman/a gritty, physical defender - will have been done and that we'll take the same roster into the 08-09 season...

They put too much trust into Stafford, MacArthur, Afinogenov and Connolly. It back fired on them and cost us alot. But, i think majority of the fans had huge hopes for most of those players as well. I know i did.
MarkAF43 Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 BM it's good to know the kid in the avatar looks better than his father
Bmwolf21 Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 BM it's good to know the kid in the avatar looks better than his father  That's not hard to do...the kid could look like Sloth from The Goonies and he'd be better looking than me.

I go back a little further than the previous two offseasons to bolster my belief that they'll do something. Last summer and offseason 06, they were the tree with all of the ripe fruit. Obviously, we know that could have been handled better, but it wasn't and most of us have moved on. Last offseason also saw them tie up a bunch of money in Vanek. Maybe that was money earmarked for someone else, but Vanek was deemed the higher priority at the time. With this year's finish, now Darcy finds himself in a position where he has had success in the past- with a young team that will improve with experience and that with the proper moves and additions can have some success in the playoffs again. I don't know enough about other teams to know what these moves could be. Maybe it's reactionary thinking to the lack of activity the last two days. Maybe it's when Darcy says he's seeking trades, I believe it. It's worked before. Hopefully, Max can still bring something in. WGR reporting that Jason Smith and Buffalo in negotiations. We'll see what happens.

I like Stafford a lot still, and even if the Sabres don't they he is a good bargaining chip, as is MacArthur.

We'll see what happens. Summer of 06? Seriously? Come on.... What should they have added? They thought they had a great team, and it was proven they did. They were strapped for cash at the cap all year long, remember they always had to bring a player from Rochester and send him down to save cash under the cap? I mean they had to trade a first round pick, Biron and Novotny just to get Darius Zubrus in here.

I'm just saying that last year and last year alone, he was a disappointment.

LabattBlue Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 WGR550 is reporting the Sabres are talking with Smith's agent. This thing has legs folks! This article was posted on WGR550's website earlier today... http://wgr550.com/Sabres-talk-to-Smith/2533934 Sabres talk to Smith nick@wgr550.com (WGR 550) -- WGR has learned that the agent for former Edmonton and Philadelphia captain Jason Smith had very preliminary discussions with Sabres general manager Darcy Regier, and that he anticipates talking to Buffalo again Thursday. Art Breeze said Smith has received a number of very aggressive offers since the signing period began, and his family is trying to figure out the best place to play. Breeze said Smith hasn't received a firm offer from Buffalo, and that he must gauge the seriousness of the Sabres. Breeze told WGR that Smith has a nine-point criteria for deciding where to sign. It's a safe bet that Ek is using the WGR report as his source.
ROC Sabres Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 I renamed the thread title. But are you sure they are interested in him? Not just feeling him up for a little while to wet our whistles? EDIT: Bad choice of words now that i read it.

I mean they had to trade a first round pick, Biron and Novotny just to get Darius Zubrus in here. 06 was different from last offseason. I just meant that because the Sabres had a solid team, they had to operate from a different frame of reference than they were accustomed beginning at that time, maybe which was not Darcy's strength. This summer is more Regier's style, in my opinion.
ROC Sabres Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Are you serious? Only when I'm not posting.
X. Benedict Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Jury's still out on Stafford and MacArthur. I like Stafford a lot still, and even if the Sabres don't they he is a good bargaining chip, as is MacArthur. Stafford yes, MacArthur no. If he doesn't make the roster he'll get waived.

stenbaro Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008  Thank God..He will make the Sabres a better team if they sign him.. That will earn Darcy 2 bananas on the scale
spndnchz Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 But are you sure they are interested in him?Not just feeling him up for a little while to wet our whistles? I'd feel him up, but I ain't wettin' no whistles on him.
Two or less Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Stafford yes, MacArthur no. If he doesn't make the roster he'll get waived. I think they will include him in a package.... probably Florida, they were very high on him from what i heard.
