Swedesessed Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Thoughts on Jason Smith being the Dman signing that Regier was looking for? Is he signed?
Bigthuder1636 Posted July 3, 2008 Author Report Posted July 3, 2008 Is he signed? No it was reported on WGR that Regeir has had intial conversations with his agent so I was wondering what people thought of possibly bringing him in
That Aud Smell Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 No it was reported on WGR that Regeir has had intial conversations with his agent so I was wondering what people thought of possibly bringing him in holy smokes, thuder - don't do that to me. i'd happily welcome smith as a 5-6 d-man on a 2 or 3-year deal for the right price -- as much as the emergence of richards and, to a lesser extent, carter, it was smith's intangibles and warrior mentality that keyed the flyers' turnaround.
CallawaySabres Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Considering numerous other teams have had serious discussions and Sabres have had one preliminary talk, I would not be too hopeful. A Dman and leader with one signing, I'll cross my fingers even harder. I would be extremely happy with that signing along with Miller and Pomminstein extensions period.....
Swedesessed Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 No it was reported on WGR that Regeir has had intial conversations with his agent so I was wondering what people thought of possibly bringing him in Ah gotcha thanks for the clarification.... I would welcome this move with open arms...a former captain...a guy who has been through the wars and can bring some grit to a team that really needs it...i say definitely.
SabresFan526 Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Just read the WGR article. I would not mind having Jason Smith at the right price. But, if you read the article, he has a nine point criteria on where he decides to sign. It seems too complicated, and I just can't imagine the Sabres meeting all of the 9 points he is looking for. I'm beginning to think more and more the Sabres might bring back Rhett Warrener on a one year deal at sub $1 million and also bring back Teppo for his usual contract of one year $2.6 million. I think next year's d-pairings will be: Tallinder-Lydman Spacek-Sekera Teppo-Warrener (interchangeable with Paetsch much like Pratt was this year depending on the matchup) 7th - Paetsch 8th - Weber 9th - Butler That's what I think will end up happening.
shrader Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 It would be right along the lines of the Numinen signing, which worked really well for us. It definitely wouldn't hurt from the veteran presence perspective.
vasabresfan Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 I like the idea. I think that a guy who has been a captain for two separate teams is just the tonic for a team that appears to be devoid of a leader. He's not flashy by any means and isn't going to put up a whole bunch of points, but I'd rather have solid, reliable play that doesn't cost you odd man rushes. Speaking of that, and understanding that there isn't too much that was special about him, is Nolan Pratt going to be coming back? I may be in the extreme minority here, but of the games I got to watch, I thought he was pretty solid and didn't make many dumb mistakes. I think he is an asset and I'd like to see him stick around for stability purposes.

IMO, he did run out of gas by season's end. But I felt he was the toughest of the group and he played his game night-in, night-out. That said, I don't see the Sabres giving up on Paetsch. Smith would bring a veteran presence, much-needed. But little else I'm afraid. Hope he'd prove me wrong if signed.
Team Strike Force Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Would bringing Smith in REALLY make us happy? Or is it just that they might bring in anyone? Smith seems old and slow. Why do we want that?
SabresOnTheWarpath Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 i'd be very happy if they signed smith. chelios is old and slow and he seems to be working out just fine for detroit
Strow Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Smith adds a few things on this team right away, PK, Physical clear the net guy, and a Vet that the kids listen too. Thats two checks that this teams needs right there and a plus with a PK guy. Sure he is old but he is better than Teppo and Pratt at this point.
stenbaro Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 I would be very happy..I wanted the Sabres to ga after him last year..He brings everything we lack in the defensive end
Two or less Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Smith adds a few things on this team right away, PK, Physical clear the net guy, and a Vet that the kids listen too. Thats two checks that this teams needs right there and a plus with a PK guy. Sure he is old but he is better than Teppo and Pratt at this point. Right on. Smith is old and not as good as he used to be, he's slow and won't really help any of our rushes up the ice, however, he's just as good in hitting as he's always been, he's a force on penalty killing and blocks shots. He's the longest captain ever in Edmonton Oilers proud history and was the captain last year in Philly which just shows he's a great guy, great leader and i'd love to have him here.
Bmwolf21 Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Would bringing Smith in REALLY make us happy? Or is it just that they might bring in anyone? Smith seems old and slow. Why do we want that? Because our young, mobile defense has worked so well... Adding a a little grit and growl to the blueliner corps is never a bad thing, IMO, and he's not exactly a Rathje/Hatcher pylon out there.
Strow Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 HAHAHA Rathje/Hatcher pylon is so true!!! Really when I could watch the Cryers I never saw smith do something really dumb on the ice when I did notice him. Thats gotta be good right? Heck I saw have him on the PP too maybe that will cut down on the shorties against us.
Goodfella25 Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 FWIW (probably nothing), the guy who makes stuff up is reporting Smith is closing in on a deal with Buffalo... refusing to waive his NTC... also Jason Smith may be closing in on a deal that would find him a Buffalo Sabre. http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=16073

Strow Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Very sad to read this I knew I was getting my hopes up.

The author must be on the Flyer payroll.
Goodfella25 Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 WGR550 is reporting the Sabres are talking with Smith's agent. This thing has legs folks! This article was posted on WGR550's website earlier today... http://wgr550.com/Sabres-talk-to-Smith/2533934 Sabres talk to Smith nick@wgr550.com (WGR 550) -- WGR has learned that the agent for former Edmonton and Philadelphia captain Jason Smith had very preliminary discussions with Sabres general manager Darcy Regier, and that he anticipates talking to Buffalo again Thursday. Art Breeze said Smith has received a number of very aggressive offers since the signing period began, and his family is trying to figure out the best place to play. Breeze said Smith hasn't received a firm offer from Buffalo, and that he must gauge the seriousness of the Sabres. Breeze told WGR that Smith has a nine-point criteria for deciding where to sign.

spndnchz Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 I'd like to give my opinion to Smith signing ahead of time. uh, yeah, that's nice, I guess, huh, well, okay, ... :chris: arg. Hey lOOk I'm a second liner. I'd like to thank my constituents ...

The reason I wanted to post that is I am listening to WGR right now and a few minutes ago they had a sports update which made it sound like talks are continuing.
