Two or less Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 22.5 for 6 years...seems cheap. They are now reporting it's actually a 5yr deal, not 6. Still, a price well worth it for Buffalo IMO. Poor move by Darcy.
LabattBlue Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 I re-opened your thread because you were feeling restricted. Can you breath now.
LabattBlue Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 C'mon you are no longer restricted. Let's hear what you have to say!
deluca67 Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Looking back on it I can see why the Sabres wouldn't want Orpik. Tough, physical and gritty are not traits coveted by this front office. They will either trade for some over the hill wreak like Jason Smith or some other uninspiring OK to average defenceman like Spacek or Lydman.

Or a coach who's so hellbent on micromanaging everything, he even manages how many hits a given player is allowed to throw during a game. I wonder - Is a player free to time said hits, or decide to who they will be delivered, or is that Ruff's call as well? But hey, what can you expect from team who haven't been able to decide on a captain since 03-04?

darksabre Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Glad to see we never made them an offer. 3.75 per was exactly the number I suggested a few times. Give the Pens credit for getting it done. Pavel Kubina? At least he used to fight a lot. Hasn't had one since 04 though... <_< And at 5 mil per year, he's kind of expensive...
Conn Smythe Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 The fact we never made him an offer is ridiculous. :wallbash:
Kristian Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Once again, Buffalo never thought much of Orpik.http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/story/384081.html Just like Orpik, and pretty much every other player in this league, never thought much of the Buffalo Sabres.
Conn Smythe Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 And Im sure that has nothing to do with our amazing track record with our own players <_< Even if Darcy does go the trade route and picks up a solid dman, we still missed quite an opportunity with Orpik. We easily could have signed Orpik(or a Commodore) AND traded for another quality dman. Oh well.
darksabre Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 the way I see it, Darcy probably felt that Orpik's worth was around 3mil per year. They called brooks' manager, asked him what the price was, and anything over 3 was probably a no go. We'll see how Brooks does next year; maybe Darcy will prove to be right and Brooks will go back to being average.

We'll see how Brooks does next year; maybe Darcy will prove to be right and Brooks will go back to being average. it's disappointing to see what was in today's local paper. that said, given the indication the pittsburgh apparently came with $3MM and that was rejected, that buffalo then inquired into the asking price and inquired no further, it seems clear enough that the team made a conscious decision that orpik wasn't worth ~$3.5MM annually. so we'll see if they wind up looking smart or stupid on this one. i can see it going either way, or, more likely, ending up as something of a muddle and a topic of legitimate debate. one last thought: spacek is our top-paid d-man at ~$3.3MM, and is in the final year of his contract. i understand the reluctance to pay ~$3.75 for a guy who's not going to be in your top pairing ... but, at some point in the very near future, the team will probably have to shell out ~$5MM for a 1-2 d-man.
SabresFan526 Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 This is unacceptable to me. For what Orpik signed for, I'm shocked the Sabres did not even make an attempt or an offer. The Sabres blueline needs a tough, physical defenseman because right now they're a bunch of pansies. Orpik would have provided that physicality. Considering he signed for $3.75 million, that is something the Sabres could have easily afforded and it would be an upgrade over the incredibly soft defense corps they have now. I just can't believe the Sabres did not even try to make an offer. That's just ridiculous. I'm expecting Teppo coming back for one year $2.6 million for sure because this team does not look like they are going to do anything this offseason. I could even see Pratt coming back again for the veteran minimum. I really do not see any changes taking place with this team this offseason, and in my opinion, that's not a good thing.

Just because he signed for 3.75 doesn't mean that this was the number that the agent gave to Darcy. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guarantee that it wasn't. He threw out a number that Darcy figured that there was no point in trying to negotiate down from... that or they really weren't all that interested as TW has been saying.
K-9 Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Once again, Buffalo never thought much of Orpik.http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/story/384081.html I agree completely And it's obvious every other team in the league with a critical need at D, save the Penguins, thought the same thing of Orpik. Yet, Darcy & Co. are the only FO that's wrong. He's physical, nearly always plays with a lead on a GREAT offensive team, and had a good playoffs. Good for Brooks. But he's not the type of player the Sabres want. That simple. GO SABRES!!!
LabattBlue Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 The fact we never made him an offer is ridiculous. :wallbash: It all depends on what the answer was from DR's question..."What kind of money are you looking for?"

Seeing as how Orpik also came out and said that (when asked about going to Buffalo) he would like to, but its a buisness (refering to playing in the NHL), I doubt he was going to take a discount to play anywhere and was looking for whoever was going to pay him the most. Chances are, your last line is what really happened, Buffalo just wasn't interested in him, and was probably on their list of guys they weren't that interested in, I hear they call this list the Unrestricted Free Agent List

"I was told by a source yesterday that Brooks wanted no part of playing in front of his family and friends. He'd rather concentrate more on playing his game with no distactions. The Sabres reached out to Orpik but quickly learned that it would be pointless to pursue him." But like I said, I think its more likely that the Sabres just weren't as interestred in him as the fans were Eklund is very unreliable. Garth actually does know people, mostly agents and people within the Sabres. I don't think he'd make a quote like that up without having back on it.
LabattBlue Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Garth actually does know people, mostly agents and people within the Sabres. Garth is anonymous just like Eklund, but Eklund makes #%^$#! up, but Garth is credible?
Two or less Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Garth is anonymous just like Eklund, but Eklund makes #%^$#! up, but Garth is credible? No he's not. To me and you yeah, but he goes to the locker room, speaks with Lindy each day before on game days. He's usually reports starting goalies, lines, injuries quicker then anyone else. So i guess he does have some credibility. But even if he's not credible at all, who's to say Sabres even cared one bit for Orpik? They could think his game is garbage?
