Buffalo Fan Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 Could it be that Darcy is waiting to hear from someone? Sundin perhaps? He holds a lot of cards for certain teams. Buffalo has occaissionally been mentioned as a fringe possibility.

Buffalo Fan Posted July 2, 2008 Author Report Posted July 2, 2008 Vancouver offered him 20M for 2 years... How could he consider any other offer other than that and retirement? I know he wants to stay close to Toronto....maybe Gallisano would go for a 1 or 2 year deal to grab a high profile guy like Sundin. With enough paint, a lepard can change his spots.... Brooks just signed with Pit
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 The only person Darcy is waiting to hear from is the service guy at Northtown Dodge who is working on Darcy's '96 Caravan.
Buffalo Fan Posted July 2, 2008 Author Report Posted July 2, 2008 The only person Darcy is waiting to hear from is the service guy at Northtown Dodge who is working on Darcy's '96 Caravan. :w00t: Nice! and to Dante, no, other than creating discussion, I am not trying to ryle anyone up. A lot of restrictive thoughts around here..."no new threads about Brooks please"..."no off the wall possibilities please".

frisky Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 Sundin not the Sabres style at all. They wouldn't pony up the money for him. Who's starting to get the feeling that we'll have the same team that end the year at training camp? But, with Lalime.
stenbaro Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 The only person Darcy is waiting to hear from is the service guy at Northtown Dodge who is working on Darcy's '96 Caravan. Leave Al alone..He is a friend of mine..He wouldnt work on a 96 model anything..LOL

Bmwolf21 Posted July 2, 2008 Report Posted July 2, 2008 Leave Al alone..He is a friend of mine..He wouldnt work on a 96 model anything..LOL Al probably knows my family real well then...our Dodges were ALWAYS in the shop at Northtown. My father's Intrepid was in the shop so much I think they were contemplating changing the address on his registration...

And rightly so! A lot of people are in a housing mess today because they shot for the "stars." Life in general isn't about "keeping up with the Jones." Sure I want a Cup... But, I would rather take a sound franchise, be it sort on marquee players, for years to come.

This statement epitomizes what it is like being a Buffalo sports fan. We are so afraid of losing our teams that we pick "sound franchise" over winning.

bottlecap Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 One of the reasons we're not plunging into the free agent market is because it's an election year and TG is spending millions of his dollars to break the Republicans lock on the state Senate. One of the candidates he's backing is "Baby" Joe Mesi and he will reportedly open up the wallet for Republicans who support his reform agenda. This is a man who spent $94 million dollars trying to get himself elected as governor. http://polhudson.lohudblogs.com/2008/07/02...back-democrats/ I sure hope a major deal is in the works for Bouwmeester but I think Miller, Pominville and Gaustad is the focus.
BamBam Posted July 3, 2008 Report Posted July 3, 2008 Could it be that Darcy is waiting to hear from someone? Sundin perhaps? He holds a lot of cards for certain teams. Buffalo has occaissionally been mentioned as a fringe possibility. DR said that they have their own value for players. This is the team that turned down Soupy's 5 for 25, and he broke the bank. Sundin is getting 10 Mil offers from the Canucks. Come on. They are not waiting on Sundin. They could try and sell that to the fans today if they decide to have another presser and blame the no activity on that, but DR laid the groundwork the other day and said not to expect much.

Life in general isn't about "keeping up with the Jones." Sure I want a Cup... But, I would rather take a sound franchise, be it sort on marquee players, for years to come. Nice analogy...the country's economic woes built on shady subprime lending and a slumping dollar is completely comparable to a closed hybrid capitalist-socialist economic system where teams are required to spend X dollars but cannot exceed Y dollars. Fantastic strawman, by the way. "I want a cup but would rather have a sound franchise." Come on. Is signing a Brooks Orpik to a $4M contract going to destroy this team's finances? Is picking up a UFA center at $4-5M per going to push us back into bankruptcy? No and no. Not many rational people are asking the Sabres to spend like drunken socialites with their hubby's platinum card (or like the Rags.) Most just want to see some semblance of an attempt to improve this team. And it's real tough to see that when guys that would help the team sign reasonable contracts elsewhere while our GM sits on the sidelines whining about the marketplace. Before the anti-negativity police come in and jump all over my post - I know, it's only July 3. I know we're planning on throwing away assets in trades to make the team better. It's just frustrating as hell to watch us be non-players in FA for the second straight season, especially coming off a non-playoff year. /rant
Buffalo Fan Posted July 4, 2008 Author Report Posted July 4, 2008 what's the weather like up there on Mars? Quite warm actually...I'm back in Pittsford this weekend...any good fireworks to see tonight?

Life in general isn't about "keeping up with the Jones." Sure I want a Cup... But, I would rather take a sound franchise, be it sort on marquee players, for years to come. How sound can the franchise be if every year the GM is bewildered by the "market place?". He seems to be the only one on the planet who doesn't know the "market place" will continue to go up. What did he expect? Did he expect the value of the contracts to start trending down this off season? So that Darcy isn't shocked again next off season maybe someone should start now to explain to him that salaries will go up again next off season. Darcy is like the guy who refuses to fill his tank with gas because he thinks tomorrow will finally be that day when gas prices go down. It would have been nice if the Sabres came in to this off season prepared. When you sit back and continually wait to react to what other teams are instead of being aggressive you get shut out. Maybe instead of letting other teams set the "market place" how about being the team that sets the "market place". If Miller would have already had a contract it would not be influenced by the recent signings. Not only have those signings driven up Miller's price it cast doubts over the Sabres ability to get him signed. Maybe signing Miller earlier would have brought the value of the more recent contracts down.

The most the could have done was worked out a deal maybe a few weeks ago and annouced it on July 1st like some teams did, but I really don't think it would have saved all that much

Since the Lockout, have they ever signed more then 3 lower to mid level Free Agents? And I personally would rather see them get a cup then worry about the financial woes of a billionaire and his toy. The point of an NHL franchise is to try and win a cup. Thats why we all buy merchandise and go to games to cheer for them, to see them win. Well atleast most do, I don't see many fans at games that are there to cheer on TG to break even every season. I'm not saying that they should break the bank every year, but if the main goal of the franchise is to break even every year over being competitive, then they might as well just fold or sell because whats the point? Why go cheer for a team thats only there to take my money and turn a profit, and winning is an after thought?

Why the hell do wait till July 1st to even start negotiations. The Sabres ran the risk of having the price of goaltending go up which it did. Regier has to learn you can't continue to let other teams negotiate the price of your players. It going to cost this team Miller and maybe even Pominville who both at this time should already have contracts. I have no faith that the Sabres will be able to get either one done let alone both.
